THE REAL GAMECON

Ok guys after a certain good but failing attempt at a Gaming convention it came to me and idea that will need great backing of the gaming community. Since attending my new school i realised that their
2 computer labs of 20 or so computers go unused over the long weekends and summer holidays. Thus it came to me
Host in my school either over a 3 day weekend or even during the summer.
it would entail co-operation of the main GL's Euro , SNS and HQ
provided we get enough interest and people willing to come their co-operation should be par for the course
the idea - gls pitch in and bring about 30 of the 40 needed pc's and the rest is BYOC, these 40+ pc's then proceed to host national tournaments in all the current games of interest to the gaming community.
Then to cater for all the gamers, we would have a section devoted to Anime where all your needs can be catered for, i can also organise for the people behind the Heroes Convention to join us in our venture. As always the school must make money off of this venture or else they will not want to do it. I propoise selling tickets to come to the "First Annual Caribbean Gaming Convention" and then an entrant fee for the competitions, as well as a fee to "spectate" as the competitions go on, this is negotiable. other than that, the comics and anime and even as far as a software section can be organised and provide an entertaining event for all
maybe a casemod competition?
maybe a best amv competition?
maybe even a "best sniper" stall
prizes for things like best overall gamer
1st prizes in each game
depending on funding 2nd and 3rd too
but guys i cant do this without you SOUND OFF if your interested in hearing more , helping out and taking part
so SOUND OFF and let me know this is potentially a great achievement in the Caribbean gaming history lets make it happen , it doesnt have to be now, today or next week but lets do it maybe we may even have to wait for summer but hell i want to know that your interested

Well yes but i want the support first, cuz the school will want to see that if they do agree that they will get a sizeable sum of money for their time ya know
so i need a serious backing of the gamers for this to work

angelus if they're in this for the money then there's no guarentee. what i can suggest is see how amenable to the idea they are. The gl's might consider it wasting their time if they don't have permission in the first place BEFORE they actually look into it, because it's going to take a lot of communication organisation and co-ordination and energy of a lot of people.

baw! BYOC heaven .
any large public place can host it, what would be cool is if the BG building in POS could host it! wi fi network, plenty space for BYOC , Euro right down d road, could get a 100 foot LAN cable and link it up. people could sweat out in d road thanks to d wi fi.
How bout organise for a school to school LAN tournament championships? most schools have computer labs and space .

2 computer labs of 20
so we talking 40 pcs right there, non-byoc. you mind slapping us with the specs on dem machines? they quakable ?
next question, the school poor, all schools poor, in 1 night they could make 40x30 =1200tt. that is from 7pm to 6am dey. in a 1 night run. and that is just counting the non-byoc. leh we assume that atleast 10 people go bring dey own pc. 10x30 = 300, 300+1200 = 1500tt in one night. 1500tt = repair desks, chairs, hookers for principle, etc.
as long as is sweat, we backing you 100%, de real question is...are the machines in there sweatable? would they allow strangers to use their pcs? what time they go feel comfortable with?
but i see that you talking tourney, and not a regular saturday sweat, so leh we say since christmas holidays coming up, people gonna fly away , visit family, etc. that means we hadda do it sometime soon, november-december = people studying for exam, december-janu = people away by family. if however they wanna conduct regular sweat, then sure
, we can promote dey school an thing. as i say that, what is the name of your school?

wonder if they would allow us to use an extra class room
if so then we can have byoc and network dat together

aight check it fellas, i am glad you guys are in support of this venture,
they WILL support this venture, provided that i can either rent the school or organise accordingly, update its more like 60 pcs in all d school have , problem those machines are not to be used, jus the network and monitors etc, solution, pay a GL to bring their pc's and they get profits too, i believe the school can be "rented" for a certain fee which would then mean that they are out of the way,
problem ; security - anyone entering and leaving any of the sweat rooms will be searched and of course, no bags allowed. we dont like sprangers no jitsu
problem : food and drink?
solution: the school has a cafeteria which will more than likely be happy to sell to the masses, though a tad bit expensive it has most anything needed for gaming.
problem: anime section?
solution setting up a separate area just for the anime lovers in the crowd, best fan-art competitions, etc etc. any ideas are welcome
problem: comic lover?
i am personally friendly with the operators of the "heroes convention and will more than likely be able to get them to pull out for this prestigious event.
problem: tournaments?
solution : EVERY SINGLE GAME thats hot right now will be had in tournaments and these tournaments are national so guess what , win here and your gonna be ranked i.e. national recognition , so all them guys bumping yuh gum time to come and show who really ownage who.
mainly pc though
problem: console?
solution: i am not a console lover, neither am i omnipotent so if someone would like to volunteer to host this section of the REAL GAMECON then please let me know what you plan to do
problem: funding?
solution: beg plead steal .. nah only joking i can organise the needed funding even if it means getting a loan.
it will more than likely end up being in the early summer, possibly the friday to the monday after school closes depending of course on tournaments schedules and whatnot.
about the classroom for byoc i'll see how that goes, cuz the school dont want nothing damaged and it takes alot of work
to clear out an entire classroom.
I attend Maple Leaf International School
fellas lets keep this event a sane one , lets not have any thefts or broken anything cuz then it will never happen again.
entrance fee?
hmm depending on the overheads to make this possible i am thinking around 40$ or so but this CAN VERY WELL CHANGE

@we cant use de school pcs. hoss you know how much it go cost to bring down GL machines? de GLS may not even allow that. if we do that we bussing an entire day of profit for them. that means we hadda pay them back and pay them for de GL pc transport. but at least we got the monitors though. euro have like 30+ pcs, hq have like 15+. sns...well their pcs kinda old (good for starcraft/sof2/older games). now is to get the management of those places to give permission to transport their pcs down. im pretty sure all will say no besides hq. hq = a serious place

This reminds me of The Name of the Game Convention.
anyone here remember that? Had incredible potential.
Same principle, hold a big gaming convention in a school and use the schools computers and rooms, etc...
Only problem was, the computers were crap, the network was segmented and pretty much a waste of time.
The only game worthy machines ended up being the ones brought up from HQ and byoc. That was some serious logistics there, toting PCs out of HQ to the event, securing them and bringing them back in one piece.
A bit scary.
The consoles and TVs were easier. The school had projectors, so that was cool.
We had a massive thread on the old site with comments from members on how to improve that event. Anyone got that saved somewhere? RB??
The biggest hurdle would be getting all those game worthy PCs down from the GLs. I wouldn't count SnS PCs as gameworthy enough now for such an event. Judging from the attitude of Euro+ new owner, you can count them out too. That leaves just Virtual Zone, HQ and Etech.
You have their numbers Angelus? Give 'em a call and see what they say.
The second biggest would be getting all those gamers down there.
start the ball rollin.
Also, did you verify the size of the monitors? If they are 15", that will suck.

Good idea...but IMO, you wouldn't get the critical mass of support unless you get some corporate backing....
Name Of The Game highlighted that perfectly if you ask me...
Because hosting a large tourney with so many machines is A LOT of organization and preparation if you ask me...:?

also we need a critical mass of ultra gamers who will actually come out and participate in the events.
40 - 50 gamers won't be enough.
It will take much more.
Most casual gamers won't come out to particpate in such events because they think their chances of winning are very poor.
So it maybe worthwhile to focus less on tournaments and more on the convention aspect. So it will appeal to both hard core gamer and casual gamer alike.
