Beat it this morning after 2 full days of play.
Good game man...especially the web-swinging. Swinging started off kinda
underwhelming for me, but as you get new moves and new speed levels, it
really becomes comparable to the movie as has been hyped. After a few hours,
at speed level 5 thereabouts, you'll be swinging using at least 3 buttons to
swing, jump, control your speed, run on the walls, swinging on poles etc.
And the swinging isn't like the other games where you swing off of nothing
over the top of the highest building. It actually has something of a physics
engine, so swinging becomes a real skill that you have to coordinate. Lots
of neat little tricks, like the slingshot, and at the later levels, you'll
be going REAL fast through the city. You'll have to really look at what
buildings lie in your path, or else you'll end up spinning in circles or
running through Central Park like a imps.
Swinging also looks great when you're doing it right. A lot like the movie.
Plus the ciy is HUGE.
And they give you a lot of reasons to swing fast and swing well. The chases
with Black Cat across the rooftops are the best example.
They also added some decent approximations of Spidey's powers. At any time
you can charge a super-jump that becomes VERY useful and really does a great
job of making it an authentic Spider-Man experience. Instead of these little
hops from the other games, Spider-Man can leap six floors up or about a
block forward. Combine it with the dash and you get even more distance (and
a great animation that looks like he can hardly control himself hurtling
through the air).
There's also Spider-Sense, which alerts you in real time or in Spidey-Reflex
mode (bullet-time), and a dodge button. Looks pretty good, especially during
Doc Ock battles where you'll have to dodge the arms like mad. Fighting
system is a lot like the last game, but with about twice as many moves and
combos.
And then there's the GTA-style ability to go anywhere and stop random
crimes. It's fun to be honest eh, even though there are only about 8
different crime types in the city.
Graphics are mediocre to ugly at some points. City looks good while you're
swinging and it's going by in a blur. Looks bad when you actually stop to do
stuff. Less than GTA3.
Music is weak. Story is a weak condensation of the movie with a few extra
villains thrown in. Sense of humor is high though...it's the same fellas
behind Tony Hawk, so you'll be laughing at some of the stuff that goes on.
After you beat Mysterio's GRAND PLANET-CONQUERING SCHEME the first time you
have to fight him a few missions later...as he robs a Mini Mart. And I won't
spoil the "fight" itself...HAHAHAHAHAHHA!!
Overall it's a good game man. I'd give it a 3, and raise it up to 3.5 out of
5 since it's Spidey.
