That guy with the red suit/helmet and the sword is actually an NPC. In most
of the demo missions, and one of the PvP modes, you had to fight alongside
NPCs. Sometimes the difference between success and failure was determined by
who took better care of their Royal Guards.
I remember in one particular mission where I ran too far up ahead, I had to
fight a mini-boss with three of those Royal Archers. I ended up just staying
behind their backs and healing them while they shot arrows at the boss and
took down most of his energy. It made a huge difference.
When I first began to play I didn't know they could be healed, so I just
used to watch them die thinking it was a scripted event. They aren't too
strong, but three of them working together can easily be the strength of a
mid-level character.
