Dread, this is nonsense. Trivial. Fundamentally wrong, but not a scene I
prepared to fight down.
When people are discriminated for jobs and homes, that is serious business.
Getting trouble to drive somewhere or buy groceries? We have to deal with
that. Can't send your child to a certain school? We can't have that. These
things are necessities and in the public domain.
Getting braced from some snob club? Get yuh priorities in order. We have
much more basic matters of discrimination to deal with.
And it's a club, so they can always exploit the"Private", "Members Only" and
"Management Reserves The Right" loophole.
Don't fight down what isn't yours. Don't struggle to get in where you don't
belong.
Yuh feel I doh know about this kinda ting? I livin a block away from
Woodford Cafe. Them idiots does be watchin me funny as I walkin down MY
street to go into MY house, and then when they realise de scene they
apologising because THEIR car park up in front of MY gate.
Them doh fight dong we scenes...why we must fight dong theirs? We just makin
weself look like ass by puttin them on a pedestal.
Yuh know why? Status business. Vanity. Buying drinks yuh can't afford,
liming in a crowd that doh want yuh, all to feel like yuh important. Bun
that.
Tuh hell with them man. I have a lime ten times badder than they lime could
ever be, and I know when I walk into my lime in any GATT GL, almost
everybody does be happy to see me. That is my lime. Left them with theirs.
I brush this business off brother. I walkin on a higher path.

Come on Kayode...the last person I expected to hear say that is u....hmmm
at the same time..... I kinda expected the first person to be you too....go
figure...hehehe.
anyway
You was one of the first persons I though of telling this before I sent it
to the mailing list. Besides the fact that you will still have ya old
Express connection to help the lamblazing of the spot...I hold you in great
regard as a major proponent of equality, justice and fairness.
even if it don't happen to me directly I think is shit
I will confess to you now that I also sent to a news reporter. Let's see
what she does with it. In fact I will send it to a few more tommorrow.
(Don't have my media email list at home). Let's see if they investigate it
and start kickin some teeth in.

Ya know this email came at a very interesting time.
I was on the phone turning down a chick who wanted to take me to
51Degrees...no excuses just simply saying "no..not interested" and the email
arrived at the very same time. I took that as a sign.

I cannot say that I am surprised. However, it is disappointing
that this
continues to happen in TnT and at an establishment where many of
us know
the members of management. For those of you in TnT, please e-mail
me and
let me know your thoughts and experiences.

Hello Trini peoples,
A few of you may have heard of the new 'upscale' lounge called
'51
Degrees' which opened in Trinidad not too long ago, above Tony
Roma's
on Cipriani Blvd. Thought I would pass this along. A few of you
might
have met my friend Jackie Beckles, I got this from her today.

Hello friends...
well i have a report for you re. an incident 3 friends
and i
had on
Saturday May 29 at the new "nite spot", 51 degrees.
We got there about 11.00pm after seeing a movie last
Saturday
nite. we
met a small crowd of people outside. we had to wait
about 10
minutes
before we made it to the front of the crowd. the maitre
d' or
whatever
she is at the front asked us if we were on the "Guest
List".
i informed
her that we weren't. she indicated to us that if we
weren't
on the
"Guest List" she may not be able to let us in.
while this was happening, BEHIND us were 4 white men,
possibly American
from the accents i was hearing. the man standing next
to the
door lady
indicated to the leader of this group and asked him how
many
were in
his party. the man said 4. the security guard told him
to
come ahead.
the 4 white men proce! eded to enter. they were not on
the
"Guest List"
either.
my friends and i watched in awe as this was happening.
we
queried the
door lady about it. she said that the establishment
"does
make certain
exceptions(!!!) flabergasted, we asked her what the
hell that
meant,
and whether we were going to get in or not. she
promptly said
no we
weren't.
in absolute disgust, we went to the carpark to collect
our
cars from
Balisier House. we could not show parking validation of
course since we
never got into the place. so we told the carpark
attendant
what
happened. he told us that he was not aware of any
"Guest
List" that
nite. by this time we were not surprised, and asked the
gentleman if we
could leave our cars there while we headed over to
Friday's
for some
discrimination-free entertainment... he kindly obliged.
so there it is folks... if you were just hearing about
it
before, now
you actually know someone who went through it. this
pla! ce
practices
class discrimination of the highest order. you can
choose to
party
there or not, but it will now be with the knowledge
that
these people
do not deserve your hard-earned money. they only want
money
from people
they consider high-profile, or image-worthy. also, you
go
there at the
risk of being a victim yourself.
i personally will never set foot in 51 degrees again no
matter the
situation. and i'm sure my 3 friends will not either.
unfortunately for
the management, i was with 1 Trini and 2 foreigners (a
Bajan
and an
American), and they just got a very bad review from
both. i
will be
writing a letter to the editor of the Express newspaper
about
it this
week. i'm sorry if any of you have personal relations
with
the
management, however this crap needs to stop. and i
suggest
you tell
them that.
do whatever you will with this info. pass it on if you
can.
the more
people who make a stand about this the better.
Ja! ckie Beckles
