Most of those review sites give real Sh!tty guides, Biostar board? 9600XT when the 9800 pro is 40 US more?

This is the system  I would recommend
Pentium 4 2.4 prescott : 130
or
Pentium 4 2.8 GHZ C : 185 US
Board with dual channel : 52
RAM 256mb DDR : 48
or
2x 256mb DDR :96
vid card : radeon 9600 non pro : 100 us
or
Radeon 9800 pro  :200 US
case : 50 US in trinidad
hard drive : seagate 80GB : 70 USD
2x case fans : 5 US
DVD/CD-r combo drive :45 USD
monitor : 300 US in trinidad

shipping : 60 US

total cost : low end : 860 USD or 5200 TT
High end [ wit 9800 pro , 512mb and 2.8] : 1058US or 6400 TT

The 9600 pro is less than 100 bucks in pricewatch.

yeah the info on toms the dude used to build his pc is old. i have a very similar configuration to what is described in the article, but my pc is more than 6 months old.
right now i say go with a p4 2.8 or an xp 2800 or higher, and if you can wait for commercial x800 and 6800 to come out prices on the 9800s will drop even more.

BUT the article is good, has some real world advice esp for new system builders

Its interesting that so many ppl say to wait for the 6800 and X800 line of cards, but truth seems to be that neither of these will be available in large enough quantities to make an impact in the price of the 9800 or 5900. Couple with that the fact that the prices I have seen here are perhaps pricewatch aka. cheapest available which does not translate into good parts or service, most reputable sites don't sell those parts at those prices. So if you want to risk buying parts at a site or store offering those prices i'd say they're suspect, heck check out the ratings that pricewatch usually attach to the parts listing, read the complaints carefully. And one more thing what is it with the P4 support, I agree with the Athlon 2800+, fire fuh Int3l
