eh... anyone go kno or eva test to see if windows xp/2k3 go run on a computer wit 4gb ram wit no pagefile/virtual memory? if it cud, wuh de advantages of dat an de disadvantages...

yes yes you can, with XP not 2000


with 4GB ram.. ya don't need a pagefile anymore... unless the ram is like PC66 and slower than the hardrive  

the benefits would be....

SPEEED! with some fairly good ram, loading times will be faster, games will not try to cache RAM to HD and slow down pc, making games go faster etc.

With 1gb up you don't need a pagefile...for windows....but you still need a page file for programs that are designed to use a pagefile REGARDLESS of how much ram you have.

These programs will kick fuss and crash if they can't page.

If you're only using latest and greatest apps, then you'll be in luck and shouldn't run into that problem.

if you just doin normal work/gaming you won't need more than 1 GB of ram without the pagefile to get more speed.... but if you doing something heavy like 3-d rendering, and video editing you probably would want more...

if you are an extreme photoshop user like my brother you would want 2GB of ram... i saw him edit something once that filled up all 380 mb of my ram and 1GB of virtual memory.....

well i DO do a lot of video encoding... and i DO use photoshop with very high res pics... so i guess i qualify for a maad amount of ram

 what fills up ram... is when you FILTER a picture while increaseing the res 4 dpi at a time.. till it reaches 4000x2500 or something  like that.

all the ram will run at pc100 speed at best.

At worst, system instability, ram not being recognized, things like that.

From my experience>NO>I encoded already on 256MB and program didn't take up much RAM (Tmpgenc).

Rating on ram is in nanosecond and hard drive in millisecond for comparison.
