Why are we paying for Flow's cable Service?
« on: May 01, 2014, 11:26:05 AM »
I've stopped watching TV during prime time because I can't watch the shows I follow. A lot of people aren't happy with this at all. You pretty much are paying to watch re-runs. I stream all my series now because of this. Now I wonder if Flow even has the legal ability to sell the rights of shows to the local stations. Probably not and I'll go with that theory until proven otherwise.  :shakehead:

...and check out 'Boycott Flow' on fb as well.

The discontent with this practice is growing.
I discontinued my TV service because of it.
It's rather appalling that more people aren't readily doing the same.

Where is the outrage?   :|

#unaffected

I haven't watched TV in years, let alone primetime. Can't stomach the ads

Best bet is to increase your broadband package and stream. Make sure you have enough bandwidth so it won't affect your gaming and downloads.

xbmc to the world

Ent trini muss have cable?????

Well not everybody willing to do what's necessary to stream eh. There's always a crowd that's going to be faithful no matter what because they don't know how or are unwilling to obtain either legally or illegally, the content they want.

But for the rest of us, there is MasterCard... Literally. And of course holla meh eye patch brethren.

Awesome has a very valid point. Being able to just turn your TV on rather than have a device that has to stream something is more convenient to the majority.

Also, not everyone is knowledgeable about things like XBMC, Netflix etc. Senior citizens won't be in that loop unless they have family members who take the time to teach them. I'm pretty sure that the number of people who know what the term "HTPC" stands for spans no greater than the ones who own one.

Why this has affected me, not only because I follow a handful of series, I have parents who aren't particularly big on using technology in those ways. Dad has an S4 and mom has a Nexus 7 and they pretty much serve their very basic uses. I've now had to show them the website I use to stream series and even that is going to take some time to get them to use it because it's not their norm. I'm going to endure a few more weeks of complaining about they can't watch their shows before I have to show/set up something for them to do so.  :ko:

convenience is something you pay for unfortunately.

XBMC is definitely some work....but oh what a glorious "ad free" experience once setup. Been using it for over a decade and highly recommend it.

Step into the light.

We don't have many senior citizens on GATT (redlum and myself not withstanding) lol

Anyone with enough savvy to use these forums is definitely capable of using XBMC

You will not be disappointed

They say a picture is worth a thousand words....behold.....

Isn't that just beautiful?

We just have basic cable my parents have Hulu and Netflix on the smart TV. They satisfied with that as it is simple to use. Convenience is what we pay for with these streaming services.

Few questions about this this 'XBMC' thing.

Is it free?

Do I need a vpn

Can I watch Popular tv shows or is it strictly movies.

It free and you can watch anything you want. We need a proper xbmc setup thread. Anyone willing to post one?

This guide a bit dated but will set you in the right direction....

Well, most of what I was going to say was covered. 'For the Masses' TV is as complex as it can get.
For us 'enlightened ones' We know that a faster internet connection > than a TV anyday

Since someone showed me how to RSS torrents i've even stopped watching Hulu.
Convenience for me, means I don't want to watch ads, I don't want to have to be home every monday/thursday friday at specific times. So streaming stuff/rss stuff works for me.
A 1 TB Harddrive about $100 US
A flow 25 MB Connection $500 or so monthly...
KNowing how to get all your shows the day after/live? Priceless

Knowledge is power over everything. Flow's internet service has always been better than TSTT. but yeah, i'll never have cable TV. just like. never.

Agreed.

The only thing I watch cable TV for now is local news at 7, and well, Nickelodeon for the little one.

Other than that, my MGR always streaming YouTube, or Al Jazeera, or some TV show/movie that I downloaded.

To correct my previous statement.
These are flow rates for Internet : http://discoverflow.co/trinidad/internet/rates-and-packages
vs their basic Cable Rates: http://discoverflow.co/trinidad/digital-tv/rates-and-packages

For an average household we shall assume an average of 2.5 Devices (including phones)
For this household, a safe assumption is that the 20 MB Package would be sufficient coming in at $300.

And let's assume an average of 1.5 Cable boxes per Household.
Another Assumption, shows you 'must' watch , include at least one additional package from Flow's Basic Cable, The average cost of which = $85.80 + Basic Cable $150.00 = $230.80. X 1.5 (# of cable boxes) = $346.2

Off the bat, the cable package is $45 more expensive per month, does not offer flexibility like a streaming service.
Not to mention the plethora of 'add-ons' that can quickly ensure your cable experience is one of the bigger bills in your household.

Even if you bumped up the internet speed to the $500 a month package, you would likely have bandwidth enough for mom to skype, the kids to play and do research and dad to stream videos.

Sure if we go the legit route, Netflix is $8 US a month, Hulu is about the same thing $8 which covers 'most' content that is considered 'must see TV'.

XBMC is the future for the enlightened
