Miyamoto is the problem...
« on: January 25, 2014, 02:47:23 PM »
...or so the following article shockingly suggests:  http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-01-25-iwata-isnt-nintendos-problem-its-miyamoto

At first I was like 'nahhhhhh...he mad orr?'
...but then, as I read more and more of the article it started to make sense.

So many gamers my age cut their gaming teeth on a Nintendo console, it's hard to ignore the nostalgia factor when it comes to their 1st-party titles.  So much so, that's it's easy to look past the fact that the majority of the 'new' games are just existing franchises with new graphics and ideas.
This statement is rather telling...

Quote
I freely admit that we critics, trained so effectively to love Nintendo and judge it by its own high standards - many of us since childhood - are part of this problem

It's true...

Most of us who grew up on Super Mario and Zelda automatically decide that Nintendo can do no wrong with regard to these franchises, and will freely buy/play every new incarnation.

...and lets face it...Nintendo's titles are a hit with the kids.
You'll quicker buy a Nintendo console for a 8-year old than one of the other console, as you're sure most of the games will be family-friendly.
We've all heard the 'Nintendo is the kiddie platform' assertion in one form or another.

You have to admit, as a gamer, that Nintendo really needs some new IPs that fully utilize the WiiU, while differentiating it from the rest....and don't include the franchises that we've grown accustomed to.

What do you think?
Is Miyamoto really 'the problem'?

A company like Nintendo cannot rely on one creative mind, so I think placing the sole blame on Miyamoto is unfair.
Realistically, innovation isn't something that can be forced. Can't expect the man to churn out new IPs on the level of Ocarina of Time every year now, can we? Also besides, isn't he already semi retired? Don't think he's even in charge of "his" franchises anymore.

Iwata, on the other hand, is CEO. While he may not be solely to blame for the problems faced by the company right now, he has to take responsibility.
You have part of my attention - you have the minimum amount.

Generation after generation i continue to ask.
Aren't there still children? Are children going to stop being born or enjoying video games?
Then they have a market. And their market isn't children, but parents who believe that this is the product for their children.

On a personal note:
If I were to have a child, I would have them play on a nintendo console for the first few years most likely. Mainly because of the games, but also because there is a reason children are attracted to kiddie shows with bright colours and particular themes. Child studies have shown that these are most effective at young ages for various reasons that I won't go into right now, but it's just the easier choice for parents, and they understand who their market is (which is a very hard thing for many companies... figuring out WHO their market actually is)

Miyamoto is a bleddy genius , plain and simple.
Nintendo problem is not their IP, is their hardware and marketing. 90% of Wii owners think d Wii u is a new controller for the Wii....

Miyamoto don't have to come up with no new IP, he has given more than enough to the world of gaming. And each new Mario and Zelda still epic as epic can be.

My son has a 3ds, and he in love with 3d land and Pokemon.
A child growing up without Mario should be illegal.
He previously played new super Mario on nds btw.

Even though the IP is the same, is not just d same thing regurgitated. Only Nintendo has the magic to put a character in a cat suit and make it work, for old and young alike.

Nintendo just need to remember they hardcore fans, who've expanded to other titles and not solitary on their IP as kids are. Like I said in another thread. If Nintendo release a console with comparable specs to ps4/x1 paired with super hd versions of Mario, Zelda, kid Icarus, smash bros, Mario cart, Mario party, Metroid..... they will own the console market.

I love Nintendo, Miyamoto is ah boss. *reaches for a piece of 2x4*

I think WE are the problem. The games we "complain" about exist because we as gamers keep buying them.

But this industry finds a way for sorting itself out. Those "elitists" who look for "hardcore" and "competition" are purged from games the minute they finish school and start working. Those that remain dont have time for that kind of lifestyle anymore. We're nostalgic but want the same fun in less time, because we simply don't have it.

Every decade this happens. This is nothing different.

Nintendo is good at making their games and will always be. The mistake they have made is depending on 3rd parties like EA to make those other type of games for them. You know the "hard core" titles like buggy filed I mean battle field.
The only reason the Wii U is not getting the 3rd party support is because they refused the DRM thing that all developers were pushing for. And make no mistake Microsoft was not alone in supporting it. Sony did as well but pulled back when they saw the reaction Microsoft got. Don't believe me? Remember when Sony and Microsoft were both waiting to see who will reveal there system first?
It was to see how the consumer will react to the DRM policy. And why games like BF are buggy because they were built to work with DRM. But developers wont say that. So my only problem with Miyamoto is that he has not broken Nintendo's dependency on 3rd parties for M rated games. I know Nintendo can make these games on there own. And I know that's what people like the writer of the article is looking for, because I can name some new IP's Nintendo has made .

Compelling argument there...I am at pains to find fault with it.

While I do agree with the author somewhat, I too consider Miyamoto a genius, but he, and by extension Nintendo, needs some new tricks.
I think Nintendo themselves are living in an insular bubble, while the rest of the gaming industry has moved on, and they're in danger of being left behind.

Feel free to disagree with me, of course.

They will continue to have their appeal to the young, and young at heart, but I yearn for the day that I (as an adult) can truly be excited by a 'new' Nintendo console.

Pointless crybaby video...more useful as a commentary on the state of industry journalism/media manipulation, but doesn't change any facts about the state of either company. Comments on it are gold though:

Sony Ponies: Hard-headed, stuck-up, and deliberately ignorant.
Nintendrones: In such epic denial all the goddamn time.
Xbots: Literally stupid, can't comprehend when bullshit is being done.

lol i just thought it was funny when i see it. But for real am guessing the reason that sony's  financial woes is not such a hot topic as nintendo's is because the ps4 is selling really well and the wii u is not its simple as that. people think that atleast with sony there is hope to turn things around. thats my impression

This. Wholeheartedly agree here. The only way this comparison works (financial woes, sony v. nintendo) is on common grounds - gaming. Sony is cutting TV and PC business from many of the reports floating around. The gaming division by all accounts seems to be flourishing thanks largely in part to the success of the PS4.

So yes. The first man imo is a cry baby for chastising media outlets and for comparing apples to oranges - i.e. reporting or not reporting as the case may be. Love the move that saved all the jobs on nintendo's end - sucks that so many folks are out of a job thanks to Sony. Works great for us either way if they focus more on the new platforms and pushing it forward.

Once again, the Wii U is doing poorly while the 3DS is killing it - hate the wiiu, and still I wait for another classic Castlevania, and saving up pokemon for when I have more time to sink in.

The PS4 had a heating problem early on? hate that, and will wait for MGS5
PSN got hacked - hate that, and they got off too lightly
Don't care about Xbone, and sadly the WiiU is just simply put, a huge disappointment.

That who cares vid says it better than I can @ 4:55 - 5:55

LOL pot calling kettle black. That shit is funny to me.

Let's hear some more about that
