Windows 10

Microsoft will attempt to distance itself from Windows 8 by announcing its successor, Windows 9, at the company's annual Build conference in April, according to prominent Microsoft blogger Paul Thurrott.

The new OS, which is said to ship in April 2015 and is currently codenamed "Threshold," will reportedly aim to be to Windows 8 what Windows 7 was to the unpopular Vista. "To distance itself from the Windows 8 debacle, Microsoft is currently planning to drop the Windows 8 name and brand this next release as Windows 9. That could change, but that's the current thinking," wrote Thurrott on his blog.

Chief among the updates will be an attempt to mature the divisive interface. Thurrott said "it's not clear what changes are coming, but it's safe to assume that a windowed mode that works on the desktop is part of that."

The report says that Microsoft is yet to begin developing Windows 9, and is currently finalising its feature set before commencing work late in April.

Alongside any potential new OS unveiling, Microsoft's annual conference is expected to focus on both the Xbox One and Windows Phone.

lol @ distance itself. 8.1 is actually not a bad os. They just need to concede that they made some bad design choices specifically wrt Metro implementation and control within the OS. Once they allow men who don't want it to take it off then it go be good.

That said, I can't wait to see what new changes they implement. Hope they dont fcuk it up more instead of make it better.

hahhaha

Yeah, they really trying to spin win 8 as a next Vista / Me.

I suppose that is fair, considering the amount of angst over metro vs the poetic welcoming that Windows 7 received

Win 8 is no vista though, vista sucked cause it was slow, buggy, crashed, and nothing worked.
People have issues with win 8 because they start menu gone? Lol, I still don't get it, but guess consumers have spoken.

But it ain't no vista.

But seeing the feedback of win7 after vista, win 9 aiming to make Ms alot of money.
And what I've hear is win 9 going to implement alot of the features already provided by 3rd party apps, like running metro apps windowed etch. Start menu back, and various other things. Windows 8 will always be touted by MS as the foundations for what is the epicness in windows 9, can't wait. Though I'm more interested in the evolution of new tech as apprised to the reintroduction of old.

Well from 2000 to XP was the only time MS release a consecutive OS that was solid. But all the rest yes, looks like first release is experiment, 2nd is refinement of the formula. So we know what happening with Windows 10 right? :laughing7:

Ah yes... I remember them Vista tears.  :laughing7:

That OS needed IT skillz AND a whip and chair to get it to settle down and behave yes.
I always dreaded reinstalling.  M$ didn't 'get it right' till Service Pack 1.
Windows 7 was really the healing.

Windows 9 should jus be Windows 8.1 minus Modern UI.

...and if they giwwe back we 'proper' Start Menu, then I buying bout 6 copy.   Real Talk.

I think there should be a petition to have Microsoft implement this start menu for their next version of Windows. Cuz it looks amazing.

Well its Windows 10 now, so topic changed accordingly.

http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/30/microsoft-windows-10/

Quote
With Windows 10, Microsoft also plans to adjust the user interface depending on the mode you're using it in; for instance, it'll look different if you're using it for touch versus if a mouse and keyboard are detected. The Modern UI shows up as a "large Start Menu" in addition to a back button on the taskbar when you're in touch mode, whereas you'll get the traditional desktop look and feel if you're using a keyboard and mouse.

Well good God, it only took them three years to get this concept through their thick skulls. Still reading through changes for anything worthwhile.

It won't be free for everyone... e.g. those who bought a PC recently with an OEM version of Windows 8.
Only those who bought a key and downloaded/installed the ISO themselves will be eligible for the free upgrade.

I'm putting this Preview through its paces, and I'm really impressed...all the benefits of Windows 8, with the familiarity and much better UI of Windows 7.

You see this setting here...

...and the fact that ALL Windows Store (aka 'Metro/Modern UI) apps now launch by default in a windowed mode?

INSTANT WIN!!!

Oh good lord, THIS IS WHAT WINDOWS 8 SHOULD HAVE BEEN FROM THE START!!!
With Windows 10, Stardock gets no more money.  :laughing7:

You can also add more desktops natively...so you can have a gaming desktop, and a work, or media, or productivity desktop as well...

More win.

There's also a new, and VERY convenient 'task switcher' button in the taskbar, which yields this...

...which allows you to easily switch apps, and desktops.

The new Start Menu...all I can say is welcome back...we missed you.

...and the gaming works...

(no, I am not a 'beast', but I can play :laughing7:  )

If I'm getting it free, well I glad, but I have no problem paying for what is so far turning out to be a STELLAR iteration of the Windows OS.

Just got finished setting the preview up on my work laptop. Like windows 8.1, it is flying on an i5 and 8gb ram.

Coming from 8.1, its not really much of a jump. That multiple desktop and new start menu are very nice and LONG OVERDUE respectively.

Fully on 10 at work and at home. This is a true successor to windows 7, what 8 and 8.1 should have been. Good to see MS's stubbornness at least knows SOME bounds.
