hahaha

Hoss, you are coming from a $80,000+ desktop to a $6000 portable mobile device. No wonder it feels inadequate.

You're not just a special case....you are an EXTREME case.

But yeah, totally agree on the battery front. We need a quantum leap in the technology powering these phones. No doubt.

My galaxy note 2 lasts a good day on a full charge but if you forget to charge it overnight, PRESSURE.

Luckily, I got an anker battery pack which does a fantastic job rapid charging and also as an extended  life battery pack. Small enough to fit in your pocket.

Highly recommended. That device has saved me from a dead phone on numerous occasions.

Earning it a spot permanently in the car so I won't ever leave home without it.

Well I does use wireless charging to fill that need. So I have one in d office, one in d car, one by meh couch, one by meh desk, one by meh bedside. So wherever I am, phone charging.

But if I get cetch by ah client for any protracted period of time and spend that time on the phone, and have to work late that same night....yea, problems.

And no modern smartphone can last more than 1 day on proper use. We really need an advancement in mobile battery tech.

And in regards to the mobile machine, when you put it like that....I guess it's understandable....but I still want a more powerful mobile machine. I sure I can spec out a beast alienware or something to satisfy me. But that wont be mobile.
Need the portability.

And So They Rise!

Perhaps likening it to a top-notch Canon or Nikon is a bit much -- we have a hard time believing that a phone is ready to replace professional-quality equipment -- but devices like the 808 PureView and the 1020 are giving some of the best point-and-shoots a run for their money. Such a possibility was a laughable concept at best a few years ago, so how is Nokia pulling it off?

Here's another interesting development in the mobile arena

Nvidia's Project Logan Brings PC Graphics to Smartphones and Tablets
Next-gen chip makes massive graphics leap.
by Scott Lowe JULY 24, 2013
Though the first Tegra 4-enabled devices like the Shield have yet to hit the market, Nvidia is already trumping its next-generation mobile processor, codenamed Project Logan. Today the company revealed that its upcoming mobile chip will utilize the same Kepler graphics architecture found in its latest desktop and laptop GPUs, bringing graphics that exceed PS3 and rival current PCs to smartphones and tablets.

FaceWorks

To show off the potential of Project Logan, Nvidia has released footage of the chip running its advanced facial animation demo "Ira," which had previously been used to demonstrate the GTX Titan — the company's $1,000 desktop GPU. While some of the demo's more sophisticated effects had to be scaled back for Project Logan, the results are nonetheless impressive. The company has also partnered with Epic Games to demonstrate Unreal 4-powered PC games running on Project Logan at this week's SIGGRAPH conference in Greece.

nvidialogan_01

Most importantly, Nvidia says Project Logan is energy-efficient, capable of running at levels within "the mobile power envelope" and even at one-third the wattage of current tablet GPUs, such as the A6X processor found in Apple's iPad.

To learn more about how Nvidia is bringing Project Logan to life, check out the company's official blog.

BOOM BANG!!

+5 to Ultimate Gamer

Messiaah, get the ketchup and garden salad ready to go with those words.

Nice quote for the 808 and 1020 as well. Yeah, we were just talking about that.

Mobile phones cannibalizing the point and shoot camera space. Lihixxxxxx

As to the NVidia thing, Logon is still severely limited. And Tech Demos is one thing, there have been tons of extremely impressive tech demos done by NVidia and ATI years now, and not 1 GPU was able to produce a game actually looking like any tech demo.

So when actually playable games come out, then I go get meh ketchup ready, but judging from the industry in the past concerning tech demos, not worries atal.

And yes, the 1020 seems to have the potential to cannibalize cheap point and shoots. Like in the 100-300$ price range.
But I can tell u now, a 450-700$ point and shoot going to eat the 1020 for breakfast.

Why is this even an argument? Clearly it's hierarchical... there will always be a need for something compact and portable, and there will always be a need for something of significant power where in which you won't get the same in a smaller device as much as you would like it to have that same power. If a company makes something small and powerful, another company can use that same technology and pack more power into a larger device.  Following this trend, doesn't matter how far mobile technology reaches, there will always be a larger more powerful device. Remember our needs today in a mobile device will change in the future and what we consider impressive will also change.

Agreed Fully. But some men disagree with that logic.

TW and Messiaah seem to enjoy retreading the same argument ad nauseum...like 2 B14 trying to chase one another around a roundabout.

hahahah

buh aye aye, alyuh run us from the other threads so we made our own to continue the discussion on the rise of mobile devices.

doh be fass

And LTChiney, obviously you haven't been reading very closely because on several occasions both Messiaah and I have come to agreement.

That tends to happen after much debate, fact verification, careful explanation and probably more importantly...a willingness to hear the other person's perspective.

Semantics was the root cause of half of our disagreements. The English language is tricky. Messiaah could say one thing which I could completely misunderstand and vice versa.

Quote
Semantics (from Ancient Greek: σημαντικός sēmantikós)[1][2] is the study of meaning. It focuses on the relation between signifiers, like words, phrases, signs, and symbols, and what they stand for, their denotation.
Linguistic semantics is the study of meaning that is used for understanding human expression through language.

Another piece of the puzzle coming together.

Remember I spoke about connecting your phone to the tv becoming easier as a critical factor for mobile success?

Well here is another development in that arena.

The Google ChromeCast.

Cheap too. US $35.

plugs into your hdmi and allows your phone to act as a ui for your TV to play online content.

I expect the next generation of a similar device to do the same for mobile gaming content once challenges with latency are overcome.

farfetched but not impossible

note...the chrome cast allows your phone to be used independently from the content displayed on the tv. Real innovative approach.
