Like I said wyatt, micro-transactions would work for certain game types. That new halo game is an excellent choice for that kinda thing. But because value was successful with it, does not guarantee that others will be as well.

I not seeing Halo 5 being freemium atal, hell, i'll even go as far to say that's impossible. They go faster charge 60$ for it WITH micro-transactions ontop of that lololol.

But d freemium model is a dynamic discussion at this point, it works for some types of games but not others, it works for some companies not others. The ones it do work for, making money on the game anyway, and being freemium is a moot point if d gamer is still spending tons of cash in the game anyways. It will be fine for men like you who not paying and don't care about the premium content. But obviously millions of gamers hada be spending they money behind that for valvue to keep pushing d freemium model.

And unfoturnately for mobile, the games that wont support the freemium model, happens to be the high quality high caliber game that mobile will need to take on next gen. And thus mobile will get the watered down experience that a freemium model can work for. May be a hella lot of fun, like dota, but it wont be a Flagship Halo, Or Gears, or skyrim, etc. So even with freemium doing so well for value, in the grand scheme of things, the price of all other flagship games going to be prohibitively too expensive to bring those titles to mobile.

hahah

yeah, on point.

and as was pointed out in the previous video.....doing a flagship game costs a ton of money, is extremely risky....can mean the end of the company if it flops.....

so at the other side of the scale, you may find developers welcoming this new trend.

They can innovate and not run the risk of going bankrupt. Putting out games that don't cost an arm and a leg.

That is actually a positive thing the more I think about it.

They were referring to flagship games for mobile, which is d point I was trying to make, to make a flagship game for a mobile device is very risky. Doing flagship games for established titles not that risky. They know Borderlands 2 was going to sell, so they pump more money into it. Insomniac know Last Of Us going to be epic, so more money, yuh know d next halo going to lash, etc etc etc. If developers start thinking it "too" risky, then it would be a very sad day for us as gamers, a VERY! sad day indeed. Fortunately I see no evidence of that. the bevy of next-gen titles I see sony come with, then we have to see MS, then d quality and caliber of games we get recently.

Skyrim, Bio Infinite, Tomb Raider, to name a few. I see no evidence of publishers not going all out cause it too risky. D risky part of it is, trying to do that for mobile.

With d sharklike competition out there, it's actually more risky not to take risks lol (for example, Microsoft and Windows Mobile, now they getting eat alive).

Also take metro, going Windows 8 was risky......but it was better than not taking any risks and end up out of d touch screen game totally. I say take risks, if it doh work, fix what was wrong about it, then go again. It's what all d rel successful men do. Then when they succeed, they play it safe for a while lol.

You made my point for me. The triple a titles are now basically rehashes of old games by a few publishers.

Halo 1, 2 , 3 , 4, ODST, Reach....

COD 1, 2 ,3, Black Ops, Ghost, Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops 2

Gears of War 1 , 2 ,3

Diablo 1, 2 , 3

Tomb Raider 1, 2, 3, Reloaded ad infinitum, ad nauseum

That isn't exactly taking any risks now is it?

They are all playing it safe.

The cost to put out a top tier title like that is so prohibitive that is means only a few have the deep pockets to make the attempt.

And then...they have to stick to what they know will be a success. Veer to far off the beaten path and risk bankruptcy. That is the situation for the big players in the game.

So what are the chances for the little guys in the Triple A space? ABSOLUTELY ZERO.

Which is why these new developments on mobile maybe a fantastic opportunity. To see new IPs created that didn't require a US$60 price tag and a million dollar world wide marketing drive to be profitable. Some real innovation can happen here with these new dynamics.

As mobile matures and the IQ and overall fidelity increases, the costs will no doubt go up to create stellar games. So right now is the time for developers to get in and setup shop. Lay the foundation for new franchises that will rise to the top and be "sure things" for the next generation. Like the Battlefields, Diablos, Starcrafts and Call of Duties of today.

Steam has done a lot to provide an environment for this on the PC platform. We have seen such gems like Torch Light 2 which retailed for a meagre $19.99 and was found to be better than Diablo by many (myself included)

http://www.vg247.com/2012/09/18/torchlight-2-price-is-as-viable-and-as-profitable-as-selling-a-60-box/

As the man says, they make same money as a game retailing for $60. So taking that as an example, we know these new models can work and foster epic new games.

PS....

I may have to eat my words on fighting games not going free 2 play

WTF

Unbelievable

Wyatt, I Ent say free to play not viable u know, after all valve making money off dota no? What I say is, free to play not viable for everyone and everything, if d entire gaming industry go free to play there will be many publishers closing down.

TL2 better than Diablo? Loll, tried to play some coop in tl2 d thing was so buggy we never attempt it again.

And yes it is very risky to do new ip, but everybody not going to go into low budget safe games because of it. We will still get d high budget sequels cause it safe, but men will still take risks where appropriate. Yuh cant launch a new ip every year, it makes no business sense, it have taking risks, then it have being stupid. Who launches things as epic as halo, gears uncharted etc and not do sequels?

But now with next gen in d air, there are a bunch of new IPs coming from the best developers,

Bungie=destiny
Insomiac=fuse
Naughty Dog=last of us
CliffynB say they working on a new title too.

Both models would exist. Both free to play and high end premium titles at 70$.
One not going to replace d other because it cheaper, safer and easier.
If humanity was thinking like that we'd still be in the caveman days.

So just like I believe both mobile and consoles will have an equal place, so too will free to play and premium.
Micro transactions is what I think will eventually Dominate, but u don't have to be free to play or low budget to do micro.

You don't have to be....but it helps tremendously.

If a man pays top dollar for your game he is going to CUSS if you try to spring micro-transactions on him.

If he paid zero dollars, then fine....run your micro-transaction antics. So it is difficult for the two strategies to exist together in one title.

But I think my point was well made....new IPs are EASY to do with the new models and with the emerging mobile platform. That is great for us gamers and it is one of the benefits of the direction the industry is going.

I'm not calling for the end of the "tried and true". As many know here I'm a huge fan of Halo and own all the games. Owned an xbox one (the original) and xbox 360 just to play it. lol

Also own every version of Street Fighter and Tekken there is.

Dota and Dota 2 have collectively made up 80% of all my time playing games to date since birth probably.

So while on one hand you hear me champion innovation, I'm the first to admit that more of the same is also great.

We aren't divided on this issue at all as both approaches are bringing something to the table.

Yup,

Micro go be hard on a full game, but I smelling it boy, them companies positioning theyself to rape gamers, with higher prices, and micro in full paid games, take Diablo 3, it have micro in a full game. And men bury rep money in that, made alto too. One of our own gatt members made 60$ off Diablo 3, man make back d money he pay for d game lol.

Blizzard do it and get away with it, yuh go see others follow suit.

Speaking bout free to play, I think that model is perfect for combat games.
Yah get a base set of characters for free to play. And you need to pay for more.
So men who don't care bout Niņa, could leave she out, Jin men go buy Jin. Maybe offer to try out d character in practice so men not buying blind.

Looks like that is exactly what Tekken is aiming to do.

Will be interesting to see how it pans out.

People like me will only buy a single character. lol

Ryu in Street Fighter and Bruce in Tekken.

wtf, you have an impressive list of Tekken fighters under your belt there. I was a Jin player in Tekken 3 and 4 (because they had no Bruce) but I'm rubbish with him in 5, 6 and tag. Didn't help that Namco chose to change his fighting style.

In more triple A going free 2 play news:

I had some incredible times with the original Command and Conquer Generals. Most fun in an RTS outside of WarHammer and Starcraft.

Can't wait to see what this sequel brings to the table. Best of all, I won't have to pay a cent to find out.

Yes, I am a huge C&C generals fan, but they screwed up the franchise with that tiberian wars mess doh. And in the face of SC2, I doh see anybody was going to buy that anyways, good thing it free-to-play, if they can some how bring back the original formula with a fresh coat of paint (sc2 lol), then im game.

And I was also disappointed with Jin fighting style change initially, but once u learn that new jin, is juss pace. So I does cycle between normal and devil. for when I want to go retro jin.

It was 5 years....and yes, I still think they can.

Notice, quite a few games revealed today look like they can already run on a bloody mobile phone.

And as we clarified before.....the hard core experience will still exist....no doubt....but the gaming masses will be found on mobile. Despite the higher fidelity offered by the consoles.

Top reasons being price, ubiquity and convenience.

It was 5 years two years ago ,lol.
But yea, once we agree hardcore go still exists. Cause things like titan fall, division, etc, cant run on mobile for a good while to come. And they are just the beginning of the next gen era.
