How to Fix Movies that Are Really Quiet, then REALLY LOUD
« on: January 31, 2013, 07:26:06 AM »
I tried this tip last night. It works really well.

http://lifehacker.com/5920290/how-to-fix-movies-that-are-really-quiet-then-really-loud

Have you ever watched a movie where the dialogue was almost inaudible, but then all of a sudden an action scene comes in and shakes your house with noise? Here's how to fix that problem in VLC.
While these volume changes exist to make the movie more immersive, they can be really annoying if you have sleeping kids, or neighbors that like to file noise complaints against you all the time. The fix is something called dynamic range compression, and it's available in VLC. You may have to play around with the settings a bit, but in general, here are some good settings to tweak

Head to Tools > Effects and Filters and click on the Compressor tab.

Without changing your TV's volume from its usual spot, find a quiet scene in the movie and raise the Makeup Gain slider until the volume is at a comfortable level. This will boost the volume of the entire movie so you don't have to change your TV or computer's volume from its usual setting.

Raise the Ratio slider all the way up. This will ensure that any sound over a certain volume threshold will be turned down to a level you set.

Without changing the volume, find a loud scene in the movie and start playing it. Lower the Threshold slider until the sound is at a non-earthquake-inducing level.

Lastly, move "Attack" up to about 50ms, and "Release" up to about 300ms. This makes everything a bit more fluid, so your movie will change volumes when necessary but it will happen a bit more gradually.

Hahaha.

They should make it even simpler with a "normalize" setting. This was common back in cdrom days.

My solution has been to use head sets when watching such movies. Especially for cussin laced titles. Lol

The z5500 can render a "f@&k you!" audible for miles.

Yeah, that's the stuff right there.

Pity MPC can't replace XBMC

That is the home theatre media player of choice for good reason.

If you using a Creative soundcard in your htpc  look for smart volume, it does the same thing.
Most Home Dacs suppor this as well (Dolby Volume, etc).

If you have a true Surround setup, i.e. a propper 5.1 or 7.1 setup, with a powerful center channel, this issue non-existent. As all voice comes through the center channel, surrounds and towers only used for music/effects/etc.

And lastly, this effect does be amplified by compressed movies. If you watching a movie with a DTS-HDMA / TrueHD audio track, it sounds too good to notice this even if it was there.

..

@wyatt, you ever look for an xbmc plugin to do normalization?
Just did a quick google : http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=72667, i sure it have other solutions out there.

Well I don't have the problem (seeing as I have a true 5.1 setup) and also use headsets for adult movies to spare the kids the industrial language.

Nice find for those that need it though!

I think you might need a lot more than a headset for 'adult' movies.   :laughing7:

This can also be done if you have Realtek HD Audio chipset and related software for all versions of Windows (altho its still beta for Windows 8 works flawlessly) open the Realtek audio control panel go to sound effects and click the check-box for loudness equalization....

Not sure about the Via hardware and software maybe someone with that chipset can look around and report back...
