Steelseries Free mobile controller
« on: December 31, 2012, 11:10:29 AM »
Well Santa made a late 'super-turn' and left one of these for me (after some strategic email/text/WhatsApp  ).....

http://steelseries.com/products/other/steelseries-free-mobile-wireless-controller

Of course I had to give it a proper 'turning out' with games for so.
Just happened to have GTA 3 on deck, and this little controller did not disappoint.  It just so happens that the game supports the controller natively, so there's nothing to configure.

I then put it through its paces with every emulator I had, including DroidEMU, FPSe, N64oid.
I'm happy to report that it passed the 'Sho-Ryu-Ken' test with flying colors.  :happy0203:
Playing all those old PS1 classics with FPSe will be a real treat.

I even tested it with ShadowGun, which is an online 3rd person shooter for Android, and while the tiny analog sticks take some getting used to, the fact that I could move, roll, and shoot like on a regular console had me giggling with glee.

I already have the MHL-HDMI cable, so now I can game with reckless abandon away from home.

Good times. :happy0203:

Granted, it's not cheap, but for what it does, it's totally worth it...and it's not limited only to Android.  Any device with Bluetooth connectivity can make use of this, including PCs.

Arcmanov approved.  :icon_thumleft:

Very nice but when I saw free I thought you were giving away a controller  :happy0203:

was reading up on that controller some months back when i was considering buying a laptop. seems ideal for those "lecturer coming late, what to do till then" type situations lol. whenever i get around to buying a lappy, i'll definately be sourcing one.

Rage meh boy...you already have a S3.  You don't even NEED to wait for a laptop to make the most out of this thing.

The S3 will comfortably handle ALL those emulators I mentioned.  Yes...I tested them ALL before I sold mine.  :laughing7:

Total damage to buy/ship/import...about $620 TT.
Not bad at all.

To tell u the truth, I really don't like the idea of using a separate controller to play games on a phone. I find touch-controls to be good enough in 98% of titles. The other 2% I'd just uninstall if I can't use it.

I dunno, maybe if i try it out my perception might change, but for now, the thought of sitting in front of a 4.8" screen with a controller beastin' game looks ..... weird IMO.  :ko:

Question though. How's the overall feel of the controller? From the videos online, it seems almost uncomfortably small.

don't be daft eyed, you need more than sweets....you need......TV out

As arc alluded, you can take your Android anywhere with you and "hook it up" on a big screen. Or even a small screen (monitor or so)

Voila, portable gaming console.

There are a number of games that are making it to the mobile platform that are HORRID with touch controls.

Marry the android device with a big screen and a wireless controller. BOOM. Totally different story.

I never got into mobile touch-screen gaming before because the controls are that horrible in 98% of the games. (for me at least)
This controller makes it possible to actually play some of the better ones.

As I said, it takes some getting used to because of its really small size, but it passed the Sho-Ryu-Ken and Yoga Flame test...which says a lot.

Everyone I introduced it to had their head totally thiefed out, and smuggled illegally into Afghanistan.  :laughing7:

hahaha! @ smuggling to Afghanistan. Well yes. :laughing7:

I guess I made up my mind to get used to the controls from the get-go. Touch gaming is something I've never experienced till now, so the change is completely welcome on my part. Yet to try a fighting game yet though. I have a feeling I won't be as open minded when it comes to that.

@Wyatt. You lost me at daft eyed. No idea what that means. Anyway, I know all that Android's capable of, but I was talking about what I would use it for. Can't picture myself using it as a console. Awesome idea, but not something I'd do.

That is precisely what you should use it for.

At least once in your life.

Be warned, the touch designed games are fine.....but a lot of developers are just cashing in on the android platform with games that make no sense whatsoever using a touch interface.

Just porting them across and hoping for the best.

If you're serious about playing those sort of games on your phone (even with the small screen minus tv out) a controller will begin to make sense.

OK, I understand. I'll borrow a friend's PS3 controller and give it a whirl.
