Summary: Reports suggest that Intel is preparing to kill off PC upgrades by adopting the BGA rather than an LGA package for its upcoming Broadwell architecture processors. This is the beginning of the end for the desktop PC.

I want to hear it from Intel self.

It makes more sense that they would introduce this for the low-end/mainstream segment, but keep making the enthusiast/high-end LGA CPUs.....but then that might mean CPUs ALL costing $1000 US each.

Not cool.

Is Intel ready to (possibly) hand off the very lucrative enthusiast segment to AMD?
Enthusiast buyers are a very fickle bunch. Just ask AMD.

This could be a low end offering. Like for Celeron class cpus where nobody cares what motherboard they sit on anyway. lol

Enthusiasts will skip those altogether, no love lost.

Let HP, Dell and the other integrators have a ball with that.

Unless of course, the intel boards turn out to be epic win, in which case....SOLD!

Seems the whole decline of the desktop industry is really putting the scare into the boys in blue.

Mobile is the future and they seems to be struggling to dominate that industry.

Repeating their success from the desktop space is not going to be easy.

The HD4000 is semi capable for gaming.

As is the I3.

You'll be fine with games like Bastion and TorchLight II.

Don't expect Battlefield 3 and Far Cry 3 to run smoothly though.

Still, this is a brilliant find.

It would make an epic HTPC. Mounted to the back of the TV ftw.

Definitely going to add this to my Christmas Wishlist

Hmmm... I was considering this as well, then I realized that it would be cheaper to build a mini-ITX system with one of those G-series Intel Pentium dual-core CPUs.

At $200 usd, I'd be all over it though.

Also, you won't get the HD 4000

The real competitor against this would be an AMD Mini system like this:

The good news is these will get cheaper in time and are excellent HTPC systems that can do light gaming.

The NUC is 4.6 x 4.4 x 1.6 inches ; 2 pounds. Small enough to be VESA mounted to your TV.

The Mini ITX case is a whopping 15.8 inches x 9.4 inches x 8.2 inches; 7.3 pounds

That is 4 times bigger.

You're more in Shuttle territory there.

The three components listed total to US$200. To complete that build with a GPU, RAM and PSU will send you clear over the US$300 of the intel unit.

No contest.

Marry Steam's Big Picture mode and one of these and you have the making of that much rumored Steam Box console.

Unfortunately, the next generation of consoles will also be upon us by then and I'm sure they will come out swinging at HTPCs with added functionality for the living room.

Yeah, but I have those other parts, so I only have to buy what I actually need.

...and from what I've read, this NUC device doesn't come with RAM or the wireless mini-PCIE cards. So you need to buy all that if you don't happen to have em lying around.

I hope I'm wrong about that.

I been reading up more about it and you're right...it doesn't seem to come with RAM.

Wouldn't use WIFI in such a unit. Ethernet all the way. It's going to be doing 1080p over the network afterall. Nothing I hate more than hiccups during a movie.

Adding the RAM (and HD) cost will put them on parity price wise

Still the Intel box wins out in terms of size. That's incredibly small.

Now, while it may defeat the ITX option, I don't think it can stand a chance against the Sapphire AMD unit.

Which does come with RAM, Storage and WiFi. Everything you need to get the show on the road for a respectable US$391

If you kept up with last week's rumors about Intel's 14nm Broadwell chip being hardwired and non-upgradeable, then you'll know they were anything but precise. They never quite implied that all of Intel's next-gen desktop processors would be soldered to the motherboard, even if Broadwell (or some of its variants) did happen to go that way. So perhaps it's fitting that Intel's rebuttal -- reassuring as it is -- maintains the theme of imprecision. In a statement to Maximum PC, the chipmaker said it... "...remains committed to the growing desktop enthusiast and channel markets, and will continue to offer socketed parts in the LGA package for the forseeable future..." Now, that's a solid promise, especially considering how careful silicon companies tend to be about revealing any long-term plans. But it's also worth bearing in mind that the wording leaves some wriggle room for Intel -- not least in terms of selling LGA socket chips only as expensive niche options (i.e. the true definition of "enthusiast") rather than as mainstream products, should it wish to do so. Indeed, the prospect of Core i3 owners chaining themselves to HDD cages in defense of their upgrade rights may yet come to pass, and no one would want to be on the wrong side of that...
