I now starting to dabble with the RAW image support of the 1520. I now realize I've been watching the downsampled 5mp shots all d time.

And the speaker on this device is really loud. So they done a good job on that as well.

a secondary phone??? wtf wrong with these people boy.....

anyway, I just downgraded in size from my note 2 to a nexus 5. Must say....it is great to be back on a "normal" form factor.

Was expecting to miss the larger real estate of the Note 2 but that has not been the case.

I don't know how you and spaz could handle those humongous phones yes. Crazy. lol

Just wildin'.....the Note 2 was a fantastic device (especially for the price I paid) so am sure these phones will do you gentlemen yeoman's service.

Still laughing at the thought of Spaz running around the savannah with that laptop sized phone strapped to his arm though. lol

Looking at a few videos that 1520 screen looks like a clear winner brightness and colour wise (i've noticed Xperia's auto brightness method to be very aggressive, perhaps in a bid to prolong battery life. Manual brightness adjustments make it super bright though.

All in all, they are both excellent phablet devices. I like the prices I seeing on the Lumia too though, just $100 more than the Xperia @ $600us. 20mp cam with flash, great screen and 32gb built in....Not bad at all!!! I would so be over this were I a WP fan.

Yea, the 1520 eveen going for less than the 1020 on amazon.nice price for the tech you getting. And Lumia outdoor visibility have ah lil more to do than just a bright panel. Ah think Nokia owns the camera and display crowns oui.

And I post d vid above to show Wyatt how big the devices are ad well.

the flash is great, has not spoiled my pictures like flashes usually do, but wish it was xenon though. And 41mp. But I'm quite satisfied with the level of photos coming out.

Yah have extra Wyatt? I does take mines with butter :laughing7:

@Capt. If u sign ur live ID up for the dev program (which free) you'll be able to bypass carrier restrictions and get the latest updates directly from MS, I recommend you do that to get up to the latest software. Let me find a walkthrough link for u.

Here:
http://wmpoweruser.com/windows-phone-8-gdr3-aka-update-3-download-procedure/

Epic move by MS, I hate carriers.

I rely on google services for cloud document and note taking. The WP options for those are understandably, significantly crappier (Google Keep and Drive). I will explore the native services and see how they compare. Other than that (so far) its ok. Youtube HD is so far almost as good as the real big boy youtube on android. Its only been a few hours so I havent gotten chance to check out all the apps.

Ok I explored Skydrive. While its OK, the Google Drive/Keep combo is so much better. Still, it is workable. I've found third party drive and keep apps for the WP so I can try both MS and Google offerings over time and see which I prefer based on prolonged use.

I still stand by my Android > all opinion. The level of customization, functionality and flexibility just cannot be beat. I will never give up meh Android entirely. BUT i'll say this. MS has a decent platform here which has a solid chance to be the number 2 player if they continue the way they are. After using Android exclusively for the last three years, WP is a nice new experience that I am liking so far.

It could be that the novelty is still there and it will wear off in a few days but so far, not too bad.

PS: I'm developer unlocked and some new updates are downloading as we speak. Lets see what GDR3 has to offer. Also, I am using the WP as my primary device for at least a week or so in various usage scenarios (work and personal life) to see how it compares to Android. I'm pretty sure when I give my opinion after this time, Messiah won't be able to fault me for it. Next step is for him to get himself a Nexus and do the same!

WP impressions from an Android fanboy and Android impressions from a WP fanboy. Won't THAT be epic.

I'll think about the nexus, and try metrotube (best YouTube app imo) metro talk and metro mail is google 3rd party for WP that I hear rel good, metro mail suppose to support all d google mail features last I heard.

and I do agree that the SkyDrive options on wo could be much better, it works great for apps that natively use it like OneNote etc, but files not so much, needs to be more windows 8 like in its implementation.

let me know how Here Drive (Nokia drive) compares to the google solution.
and if u looking for apps to do specific things, yuh cud ask, I mite know the best off hand.

Yeah, my impressions of WP in the flesh have been impressive but the issue for me has never been in the basic usability....but rather in the philosophy behind the devices.

Closed vs Open for Android

I would love to get my hands on a 1020 for the camera. That epic piece of hardware will override any philosophical musings.

Windows Phone 8.1!

Windows Phone 8.1 will be the first step in unifying the Windows RT and Windows Phone operating system, as well as plugging other remaining holes in the platform. Below is a list of features that have been leaked coming to 8.1:

April release

Cortana Siri competitor

Universal apps with HTML/JavaScript. The leaker claims that developers will be able to create so-called Universal apps with HTML and JavaScript that can run on both Windows 8.x and Windows Phone 8.1.

Notification Center Standard notification center with enhancements and apps having ability to dynamically update notifications and mange them independently with various forms of notification updates (silent, alert, etch). (Solves Capt. Awesome feature request)

Battery Sense. A new Battery Sense app will help you see which apps are using up the battery.

Xbox Music and Xbox Video. They are replacing the Music & Video hub.

Podcast app. With the Music & Video hub being removed and Microsoft creating separate Xbox Music and Xbox Video apps, many are wondering about podcast support. According to the leak, Windows Phone 8.1 will include a new standalone Podcast app, which is unexpected.

Camera app. The Camera app has been redesigned. Surprised it's not just the Pro Camera app from Nokia.

Bing apps. A full slate of Bing apps are now installed by default, as they are in Windows 8.1: Bing Finance, Bing Food & Drink, Bing Health & Fitness, Bing News, Bing Sports Bing Travel, and Bing Weather.

VPN support. We knew this was coming, but Windows Phone 8.1 will provide the same type of built-in VPN support as does Windows 8.1. Which is to say, not the VPN support everyone needs: Cisco.

Wi-Fi Sense app as a sort of accompaniment to Data Sense, Battery Sense, and ... Storage Sense.

OneDrive. SkyDrive has been rebranded as OneDrive throughout Windows Phone 8.1, as it has in Windows 8.1 Update 1. And the OneDrive app now supports local file system browser, as it does in Windows.

SD card support. There is much better support for micro-SD cards in Windows Phone 8.1. In addition to digital media content, you can now install apps to the card, using the Storage Sense setting, above.

App lifecycle maintenance. Mobile apps are managed by the OS as they are in Windows RT. So tapping the Back button no longer kills an app. (I'm not 100 percent sure it ever did that, but whatever.) Multitasking will be "more efficient." You can swipe down to close apps from the multitasking screen, as you can on other mobile OSes. (The close boxes are still there too.)

App auto-updating, just like Windows 8.1.

New tile sizes.
As was the case with Update 3, Windows Phone 8.1 will again support new tile sizes, no doubt related to ever-bigger screen resolutions.

File Picker has been redesigned. There's a File Saver now as well.

YouTube app. Hope springs eternal, I guess.

Xbox Games hub has been redesigned

Quick Settings menu (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.) by swiping down from the top of the screen.

Action Center menu by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. Some are reporting that this is the Notification Center, but I'm hearing it's a different feature.

PlayTo and screen mirroring support. Nokia currently offers a PlayTo app for Lumia owners, and various screen mirroring apps for that matter.

More:

Navigation bar customization.
Default messaging app selection.
New USB settings.
WebGL support in IE.
New full screen media player for online content.
New in-line media player in IE.
Ability to dismiss/hide on-screen navigation buttons.
Multiple Volume Controls
Improved Calendar
Lock Screen Improvements
NFC Payments
Virtual Navigation Bar
Virtual Navigation Bar settings
Multiple screens with virtual navigation bar

Roman has been sharing some more of the Windows Phone 8.1 SDK, and the latest is a look at how sharing works in apps.

It will work similar to Contracts in Windows 8, where apps will advertise abilities.

Here is what the Windows 8 SDK says:

Contracts A contract is like an agreement between one or more apps. Contracts define the requirements that apps must meet to participate in these unique Windows interactions.

For example, Windows lets users share content from one app to another. The app that shares content out supports a source contract by meeting specific requirements, while the app that receives the shared content supports a target contract by meeting a different set of requirements. Neither app needs to know anything about the other. Every app that participates in the sharing contract can be confident that the sharing workflow is completely supported, end-to-end, by Windows.

The system is more powerful and customizable, but one can of course see how it prevents the sharing to multiple social networks at once.  On the other hands I do not think it will be long before a app comes along that will advertise the ability to share to multiple networks.

As another little unrelated teaser, it looks like Windows Phone 8.1 may have a file manager after all, with Roman saying:

http://wmpoweruser.com/how-sharing-in-windows-phone-8-1-will-work/

Functionality looks good, but something about the UI is nagging me........ something just looks wrong with it......
Hopping that is prototype. It needs some work from aesthetics perspective.
