PlayStation 4 Is Anti-Used Games; Early Specs Leaked

The next PlayStation may not play well with pre-owned video games, according to a report from Kotaku , which writes that the successor to the PS3 may tie video games to a PlayStation Network account and require online activation to play. The next PlayStation, which one might assume could eventually be called the PlayStation 4, is currently codenamed "Orbis," according to the report.

So I suddenly not too interested in the PS4 if this is true.

First it was rumored that the next Xbox would prevent playing used games now PS4 as well. If this is the case then I honestly dont care for the future of console gaming.

Not really a problem.

PC gamers haven't been able to 'sell' their used games for a long time now.

This won't bother me much.  It will just force me to be very particular about what I buy, that's all.

QQ more, so I can taste your console tears.  :laughing7:

a little confused, aren't they already doing that with the online pass feature?

I figure this new online activation would be the case for "digital download" games (the way of the future, where the "used game" market would no longer be an issue anyway)

But not the case for "old school" disc games.

As arc said...the PC market has already been sold on this concept. It beats piracy and the grey market all in one.

To counteract the "loss" of being able to resell your game for cheap, they could simply offer discounted prices on the Digital Download version.

Something steam and amazon already embraced with great success. After all, you're just paying for 1s and 0s. Its easy to discount and track. No physical media, brick and mortar store nor shipping costs to worry about.

Everybody wins.

Another nail in the console coffin.

When people realise that the ridiculously expensive consoles in 2014 are using PC parts from 2012 and that their PC's are more powerful...cue heavenly chords.

Console sales will plummet and the master pc race will become stronger than ever.

Death of PC gaming? More like death of console gaming!

Haven't we been down this road before? Most console sales are new anyway and I'm sure modded versions of the console will play used games locally, just online play will require a 'new key'. If PCs have been doing this for years, why would ppl not pay for a less expensive, equally safe platform that is simpler to just 'get in the game' on? Spinning top in mud guys

Because if most people already have a PC thats already more powerful than a console, why buy another system that can do the exact same thing?

Yeah folks neither console nor PC going anywhere. There will always be piracy no matter how much drm etc. Look at the PC, anyone on this board could find the latest titles cracked online multiplayer missing of course.

Most non gamer people will have pcs powerful enough to play movies, do productivity etc. Won't have the gpu power to do hd games.

no where they mention digital downloads... sony has long been trying to do away with used games without offering the added benefits of digital downloads...

secondly... currently u need an online pass for online features of certain games, but one can still enjoy the single player and sell it at a discounted price.. and games without online well.. much easier... this thing requires online activation just to play according to that report

if they do this and not offer digital downloads... gg ps3

Yeah.  This looks like you need a 'key' to be able to play period, just like Steam, whether single or multiplayer.

I'm guessing that this may be implemented for discs, as well as digital.  In one fell swoop, there goes any potential resale value, unless they also implement a 'transfer fee' of sorts, so you can sell, or maybe trade, your game after you're done with it.

Wow... I now study something else.  No more game rentals either.  You either buy it, or you don't.  Bye bye Gamefly

Well developers did say that game rentals are a thorn in their side. Takes away revenue from them. So what better way to take that back than to tie your games to ur nuts so u can't do anything about it =/

This was pretty much my EXACT line of thinking. Also its a possibility that Sony might offer their own rental services in a similar way to their rental of movies on the PSN Store.

Assuming that the console's firmware will be easy to hack to make that possible.  Sony is learning.  Each iteration is getting more difficult to hack than the last one.

To successfully use a hack, and remain online?  Nope, not gonna happen.

Yeh, this seems logical to me. I don't see them totally stamping out used games sales game trading or game rentals, after all these are some of the things that give consoles their appeal.

Also according to the rumour
Quote
the successor to the PS3 may tie video games to a PlayStation Network account and require online activation to play
, what about strictly offline players ie console owners that don't have internet access, does that mean they cant play the game until they purchase internet :s.

This rumour aside, its kinda sad to see that we don't actually own and have control over what we purchase anymore...

Anyways these are just rumours, lets remember that, I will wait to hear it from Sony's mouth.

Yeah it will be more difficult to crack thats for sure. Cracked versions will be an offline affair just like it is on pc. Until they completely do away with physical media second hand games will continue.

Sony would have to be living under a rock to not see the ridiculously huge potential in digital downloads.

Valve just made their owner a billionaire with Steam.

I'm willing to bet money that digital downloads will be a big part of this strategy if the rumour is true.

To do anything else will be as awesome put it, more nails in their coffin.

So I guess fire bun the console owner without internet access then! He cyah play no games.

While I agree that there is huge potential in digital downloads, they will be stupid to make this their only strategy. Alienating folks whose only crime is not having net access or reliable service providers is a foolish business move imo. This whole 'always online' thing will just be taking away one of the main factors that has made consoles so popular for decades... Simplicity

Kiss ur sales in rural US and not so developed countries goodbye.

that's exactly what I'm saying.

"old school" disc games will not be subjected to this

only the "digital download" version.

So you get the best of both worlds.

People in rural areas on Carib-Link dial up can feel free to buy Mass Effect 4 on Blu-Ray for $59.99 and resell it a year later for $30.00

People in urban, Trinidad on Flow broadband can buy it directly off PSN /SEN for US$39.99 and download it straight to their PS4.

If the discounted price isn't enough...they could sweeten the deal by releasing digital versions a few days earlier.

A lot of flexibility and gamers would love it (as they now love steam) if done right.

You stay dey and feel so.  I remember when I bought The Orange Box, there was a big yellow warning on it that said 'INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED TO ACTIVATE AND PLAY'

Don't think that disc games won't get this treatment, but, I'll wait on Sony to clarify.
