Back on the PC seen....
« on: March 22, 2012, 09:05:26 AM »
Hello folks. I am heading back to the PC seen. It has been some time since I have upgrade (Arcman helped me build my Falcon Northwest a few years ago and its still wukking decent with some upgrades)

Now its time for a full on upgrade. I am wayyyyyyy out of touch with what is up to date so ill lay my budget and requirements down and see if you guys can help. These are set in stone btw so its less QQ and more pew pew:)

1. Building a new rig only (just tower)
2. 2.5 grand US budget
3. I roll Nvidia and Intel only
4. Have 3x24 inch monitors. Want all supported
5. Liquid cooling
6. I use New Egg

Those are the requirements. Its pretty simple, im rolling out 3 new titles this year and just dont have time to research a new rig. I can order the parts and have QA build it for me so that is no seen. Would like everyones input if possible...and of course Arc in mih PC guru on this.

Solid recommendations.

Could you drop links to them on newegg when you get a chance? (There are so many variants of asus / gigabyte boards for those cpus, likewise for ram)

Also, the SSD would be a key item in such a rig, given the budget.

Hard O/C pretty spot on with his recommendations so far.

If you decide on the Core i7 2600K, then you should look at the Asus P67 Sabertooth as your motherboard.
If you decide on the Core i7 3820, then look no further than the Asus X79 Sabertooth motherboard.
Both platforms are closely matched in performance, but there are some significant feature differences.  The X79 platform is superior in terms of PCI-E and memory bandwidth.  Also, there's the potential to upgrade to existing 6-core CPUs and future 8-core CPUs as well.  X79 also features more PCI-E lanes, which can more adequately support 2-way, 3-way, and even 4-way SLI configurations.

Personally, I would recommend the X79 platform.

As for video-cards, well, Nvidia has dropped their bomb on AMD today in the form of the 680 GTX, but at $500 US apiece, you might only be able to afford one.  Looking at the performance, and power consumption vs temperature numbers, I'd say you only need one.

Must include a SSDrive in that system... at least for your Windows drive.  I use a Corsair Force 3 myself, but the drive to beat is the Crucial m4.  The read/write speeds on a SATA III interface are truly stunning.

Cases are a matter of personal preference, but some solid recommendations are the NZXT Phantom, Corsair Obsidian, Corsair Graphite, Cooler Master HAF-X (of course :happy0203:).
Then there's the top-of-the-line Cooler Master Cosmos II, but its hella expensive.  Not sure if the budget will support that.

I actually recommend a 1 - 1.2 kW PSU.  PC Power and Cooling, Enermax, Corsair, and Cooler Master are some notable ones to look out for.  Just make sure it has the 80+ Gold certification.
There's no such thing as 'too much power'.  Always leave room for future expansion.

These are my suggestions off the top of my head.  Others can chime in with anything else I may have overlooked.

Agree with arc 100% (VERY RARE OCCASION)

But to reinforce.
X79 is where its at, Asus of corse.
Personal recommendation of d Haf-X case.

D only thing i dont personally prefer is d brand of ssd.
My rule of thumb is Intel ssds only in d low end / midrange becuase their products are rock solid and doh spoil so, failure rate of d others is alot higher, even doh they may perform better in benchamrks similarly priced to d intel.

In d high end space though, d OCZ Revo Drive 3 X2 is a monster, which is what i running.

And to reinforce d point of PSU, highly recommend 1-1.2kw from PC Power, they 1.2kw ah bit expensive at aroudn 450$, but they have ah sweet sweet 910w psu for cheap on amaozn thats ah steal. Be careful when buying PC Power, becuase they've been bought by OCZ, and ocz take the pcpower branding and using it on they shit PSU. anything with d MKII moniker is shit. So make sure it dont have MKII on d psu, non-mk2 products is d real pc power hardware.

Also i recommend corsair PSUs as a 2nd alternative, but do not buy d bronze line. Yellow or Blue only.

The Bronze line is better than d PCPower/OCZ MK2 line, OCZ psus are rel rubbish, rel disgrace to d pc power name being used on they rubbish PSU. and i Think u post a link to d same MK2 above, avoid that like the plauge. And though better than d MK2, i personally think d bronze line is rubbish also. Better rubbish than MK2 doh lol.

D Yellow and Blue line of Corsair, and d real Pc Power PSU use d seasonic oem. GOOD STUFF!
Going to last u years on end. I have ah 8 year old 420w pc power boy that thing still running. And a PC power Never spoil on me. D yellow corsair core components made by d same oem, so they shit rock solid, holds up good in stress test albiet not as good as pc power. D bronze line will fail a stress test long before d yellow line. Wont recommend it. Given d fact d yellow line cheap as is.

Bess PSU right here : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703022
This PSU was selling for 100$ on amazon not too long ago. Like it gone back up, that 100$ mustbe was sale price.

.. EDIT:
now notice u ask what.
Juss watch d stick, Corsair PSU with ah Gold/Bronze looking sticker is shit. D ones with Yellow and Blue stickers bess.

Edit 2:

The corsair link you paste using CWT as its oem = same crap as bronze series.
Seasonic OEM is what you want for PSUs that last years on end. The CWT one barely make it through the stress tests successfully, really doh recommend that one.

lol @ arc and messiaah agree

Messiaah, buss a newegg link to the ones you recommend, if Hard O/Cs are of inferior quality.

Will make life a helluva lot easier for Shiv.

+1 to all involved. You all have this down to a science (as expected given the tech pedigree of the men involved)

the link was to just one US$149.00 PSU....a single link.

my request was to post links to the "ones" mentioned (ones = plural)

So now it's just to put together a rig less than or equal to 2500 US.

Using Hard O/C's list there we have...

PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703022 --->150 US

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115229 --->320 US

GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130768 --->500 US x 2  (SLI)

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131801 --->330 US

SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148448 --->160 US

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233143 --->100 US

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119225 ---180 US

CPU cooling: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181017&Tpk=h100 --->115 US

Comes up to 2355 US.

Good lord...I wish I had the coin to procure a rig with these specs.  :ko:

Those two 680s will WTFPWN like you would not BELIEVE!!!

2500 US is a bit higher than average, but its not an astronomical figure.
Look at the kind of computing muscle that 'just' 2500 US can get you. :awesome:

Good enough for a top 5 début?

910w - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703022
1.2KW - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703012 (Single bess psu available imo, thats what powering my monster, and going to be powering it for years to come.)
