What win stated there kind of sounds like what the WiiU is supposed to implement. I guess time would tell.

Mobile gaming via phones/tablets for lighter games im all for. i.e. the fruitninjas, d plantvszombie, the sonics, the oldschool retro, etc.

Siting down behind my tv to play deadspace off my mobile phone? HHHELLLL NO!

3D mobile game graphics SUCK!, You'll have to inject nanites into my brain for me to believe it looks no different than a console. And on d same note, Console graphics SUCK!,

I launch skyrim on my pc last night, first dragon encounter = GG, fire bun everything else, PC FTW!
Graphics for daaaayyyysssssss.

*Installing Bethesda Hi Res Texture pack now* :)
Just the thought of this game looking even BETTER is amazing.

PS3 has been off with a red light for months.
Guess ill dust it off, charge d control, install d million updates, and beat out Uncharted 2 and 3 some time soon hopefully.
Then take it back off again until Uncharted 4 and God Of War 4.

I wish the console would just die, and allow the high caliber games like Gears, Uncharted, and God Of War come to the platform where they belong :)

And the work Valve and Bethesda has done with the Skyrim Steam WorkShop is amazing.
Valve....The Messiah of PC Gaming.
..

And wintry make some good points, but ill just like to put this in:
The GPU industry is advancing at an alarming rate. The 5970 was double d power of a 4870 X2 just 1 year later.
The 6990 was double d power of a 5970 just 1 year later. And the 7990 is going to be double the power of a 6990 just 1 year later.

Mobile gaming will never catch up.

The only thing holding back PC now is the fact the developers have to degrade their games for it to run on a console.
Lawd help us all if the same thing starts happening because of mobile gaming.
But seeing the tremendous boost and attention PC gaming has got in the last 1.5 years. I dont see that happening anytime soon.

Graphics Wise the following PC versions of these games, destroy the console counterpaths:

B3
Crysis 2
Rage
Skyrim
Mass Effect 3
Dead Space 2

This was done in a time when pc gaming was considered low.
And anyone considering it low still have to be smoking fig leaf.

I direct attention to this link:
http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/03/17/borderlands-2-pc-optimization-promised-in-a-love-letter-from-claptrap/

And when games like Tomb Raider hit pc, the graphical fidelity such games will be rocking, by gorge!

Steam + Nvidia +  AMD = WIN!

lol, messiaah, we not talking about current day tech.

we talking 5 - 10 years.

There is a very real plateau for 3d graphics. You trying to tell me, that the mobile platforms won't be able to achieve that in 5 - 10 years??

Given (if awesome is to be trusted) that they are able to equate console level graphics today.

Imagine, 5 - 10 years later.

in 2022 mobile gaming will defiantly achieve 2012 console graphics no doubt.

I'm saying it's impossible to catch d pc (2022 pc game graphics) in that time.
Nor the console for that matter (if they still around).

And in 50 years when it does catch up, pc gaming will involve holodecks :-)

If we see improved bandwidth and latency services like Onlive might take off on mobile phones.

That's ah consideration. But too much technical limitations at the moment to even consider that anytime soon. And with people like AT&T at the helm, it eh happening.

The CEO of onlive has an interesting idea for a new wireless data services using the ionosphere for data communications. If that pans out, then MAYBE. And even that not happening no time soon.

lol @ PC2022

so you don't see a plateau for PC graphics then?

I honestly think by the next two generations (5 years) there will not be a distinguishable difference between console and PC graphics.

They will have to compete on other factors. We already saw a snippet of that with the motion devices. Instead of gearing up for a nexgen console, both microsoft and sony released Kinect and Move on us.

Soon CPU speed will be a non issue for games. GPU going to follow.

my prophecy, lol

It would really take a holodeck to keep the PC in the game at that stage.

Remember what happened to the arcade as soon as the consoles achieved "like for like" status. Lihixxxxxxxx.

They never recovered from that. It was only so much that light guns and dance mat games could do to barely keep them alive.

People was predicting the inevatable console equation to pc for years, it eh happening, thats my prediction.
And arcades dead because ppl lazy and want to stay home and freak, man eh have time standing up in no swety smelly arcade again lolololo.

The current potential of PC:

and even wihtout HD textures, console games look no where close to my pc currently.
5 years to match? no way, sorry. U and Captain awesome smoking d same fig leaf.

wyatt.. the day that console become indistinguishable from pcs, is the day technology stops advancing...

consoles of 2006 couldve compared to mid-range pc's of 2006... but as the years advance the pc advanced and the console stayed put... which is what will always happen, unless they make consoles modular and upgradeable (but thats defeating the point of consoles right)...

so yes, there might be a couple months where consoles and pcs are on the same level, but that will not be long...

not to mention.. if you see a plateau for pc tech, then im sorry to say ur not a technologist at heart... there is always somewhere else to go

Agreed with fully. Looking at the features windows 8 will add to the OS and the platform for development along with Intel, Nivida an AMD constantly pushing the bar, even in the mobile market as well, things will keep getting better and better. But when we reach the point where its hard to differentiate real life from a video game, i'll stop at that point....

I still say look out for it, mobile gaming will start to advance more than you know and why not change a docking station with the addon gpu the same way you do agpu upgrade? Just saying is all

Mobile gaming has come a long way. Good hardware is one thing but are we even seeing games really taking advantage of dual core mobile processors?

I think ios has one

and at wintry, sure upgrading your gpu in a docking station is doable, for PC men... Remember the living room is typically plug play and forget, no thinkering and that is the strength of both consoles and mobile for the general consumers.. The just want to buy a device and know that games will run on that device for the next 5 years.. They don't want to have to upgrade anything, so yes there will always be advances, but I don't think that concept will change much

Yeah the living room people want that simplicity. Funny thing you hear about the death of consoles closer to the end of life as we are with this gen. Once the next ps and xbox are launched the hype alone will have people flocking in droves.

Consoles are basically gaming pcs that cannot be upgraded, a modular system would be more expensive and would probably confuse the consumer.

There will always be a demand for this simply because a large segment of the market wants convenience/simplicity.

Apart from what woodyear and phoenix said.
Its simply technically impossible at the moment to do what wintry suggests.
Picture u take a high end gpu and put it in a midrange pc of last 2 years and tell me what happens?
Not one fart, is not JUST d gpu u have to consider, there are other components that need to work together with d gpu otherwise u will see absolutely no benefits regardless of how powerful of a gpu u slap in a shit machine.

Apply this logic to d dock idea and ull see how fast it goes to shit.
And u talking bout a mobile processor that is inferior in every way to a midrange cpu of 2 years ago.
D amount of components they will have to put in that dock to make it approach pc graphics, is bess u buy ah pc lol.
Then u have eco-system to consider, publishers not going to put d same effort into an android game as they putting into a console/pc game. That whole idea just doesn't make sense and is not going to happen.

You guys have to start looking at this realistically and stop making up fantasies of what u hope to see happen, and start applying logic to d argument.

..

And woodyear, granted d next console release may have a following with droves, but 1) We not seeing those till 2013 for d earliest. and 2) more and more ppl leaving they console to collect dust and playing angry birds on they ipad! D same arguments some applied to d PC Gaming is dead thread, can be applied here now.

Only difference is, PC could be a pc all by itself, and will continue on regardless.
If sony loosing too much money on playstation, they could very well as a company say screw that, and continue making they other electronics, Microsoft can do d same as well. D only company in it solely for gaming is nintendo.

At d end of d day it comes down to how much profit sony/ms makes of these consoles and game sales. That go determine weather it dead, or weather it live on for years to come.

It was never disputed that the PC is the most powerful platform or that it won't remain that way, however in the same way people may have laughed at the discrete gpu makers (intel included) I think some of yal are turning a blind eye or just being pessimistic about the mobile platform as a viable alternative in the not so distant future. You may call me naive or say Im not making sensible suggestions, but what makes you think that exactly what i'm talking about, someone out there isn't already developing?

Virtue hit the nail on the head.

Once games reach lifelike graphics, gpu progress would have hit a very real ceiling.

Look at where we have come in the last 10 years. From Atari graphics to what a modern day GPU can push.

We can't continue improving at that same rate without hitting that ceiling.

Double the speed and rendering capability of today's best GPU. What more can anyone want after that?  At the risk of saying the world will never need any more that 640K ram, I'll say the world will never need more than 1080p lifelike graphics.

Two generations from now, we will have that.

Sure, there will be the hard core techies who would want the 2160p Super HD 90"fpOMG-WTFs" experience on their ultra widescreen holodeck projectors but they will be the minority.

Mainstream gaming will be well within the hands of any tablet/phone/console/netbook/laptop of the day.

This is in 10 years eh messiah. Mark my words.

We should be on GATT 15 by then. Hopefully this thread will still be around to draw reference to this conversation. lol

@ Wintry : Because it does not make financial sense. That is why i think its not being developed.

The technological requirements, risks involved, and a whole host of other factors, tells me, that not happening.
I basing my predictions on logic and facts available. Not on wild fantasy.

D latest abysmal sales of d psp vita is a perfect example of how little ppl care about high quality mobile gaming. Which company in they right mind, going to spend money, to make a high end android dock that could compete with a pc?

Like u smoking d same fig leaf as wyatt and awesome boy lol.

And like i said, d components etc required to make that happen. It would infact be a pc u using. And no longer a convenient dock, defeating d whole purpose of a mobile easy to use platform in d first place. As stated by woodyear and phoenix.

Also, wyatt, in 10 years, pc graphics will not be at d stage of being indistinguishable from real-life.
10 Years is not ah long time u know, what alyuh men feel it is? lololol.
U know wah kinda graphics u talking about to make shit look realworld?
D super computers they use to make shrek cant even do that. (Granted transformers look rel real, but robots and real people is 2 different things, also, none of that is realtime)
And if PC eh reach that stage, d mobile phone, or d console, will never match it.
There will always be a significant Gap between all 3 platforms until that time.
PC>Console>Mobile.
It will always be like that until lifelike, and lifelike eh happening for at least 50 years.

Edit:

And to put things into a bit of perspective. The lifespan of a console is 5-10  years.
PS3 was released in 2006, and PS4 not releasing till 2013 = 7 years.
The PS4 is not going to have graphics even remotely approaching lifelike. That PS4 is going to last us another 7 years. PS5 is not going to be remotely approaching that graphics either. And thats another 7 years, 14 years easy. And we eh reach close yet.

Logic people logic.
