After all that clever Xbone 'marketing'...here's an honest, succinct, objective review of the console itself...

...and after watching it, my initial opinion of the Xbone stands...
All the extra functionality that others cannot contain themselves about, I actually consider totally unnecessary.
Sadly...I don't watch enough TV to make this console the 'one ring' entertainment solution that Microkia is aiming for.
Even if I did...guess what?  We have zero cable/satellite providers capable of supporting the Xbone locally.  All that 'Live TV' functionality is lost on me, and ultimately useless.

 - The UI is way more complicated than it needs to be, and I'm glad you can use your controller to navigate it almost exclusively if you want.
I'm even 'gladder' that you can fine tune sections of it to only display what you really need

 - The snap feature is cool, and it's going to take some getting used to.

 - The 'game DVR' functionality, while a little more fleshed out than the PS4's version (SkyDrive integration), the execution seems a bit awkward to me.

 - The Kinect voice-command functionality issues (highlighted by quite a few of the reviews) are concerning, but I'm sure Micro$haft will fine tune that over time.
I'm still not a fan of the 'always-on', 'always-listening/watching', but it's not that big of a deal for me.

 - Dat HDD.  :shakehead:  With 'next-gen' game installs (mandatory now) cresting 20 and 30 GB, being able to quickly and cheaply upgrade the internal HDD
is a REQUIREMENT for me.  No such luck with the Xbone.  That's a real shame.  A 1 TB hybrid drive would be the PERFECT upgrade for this.

 - Liking the new controller...especially that D-pad.  Can it pass the Akuma (SF4) 'Messatsu-Gou-Hadou' test?  Only then can it be considered an 'improvement'. :laughing7:

To summarise...
It's an ambitious attempt to be the 'living-room entertainment juggernaut', but at the end of it all...I just want it for the games...particularly the exclusives.
All that 'extra' stuff seems geared for a primarily American user-base, and I don't have a problem with that...however, I already have all this so-called 'next-gen'
functionality on several PCs, and I don't need a console to ape them.  Many do.  I don't.  I'm just in it for the games, man.

Maybe my overall opinion may change when I'm ready to buy it (next year), but for now, Sony will be getting my money.
I think I can withstand the lure of Forza 5 (the only launch title I'm even remotely interested in) for a little while longer.  :)

Whatever your choice, the important thing is to have fun.  :icon_thumleft:

but Arc, based on what I have read, you should be able to just plug in the HDMI from your Flow setup box and watch TV through the xbox.

Quote
"Live TV is something that will be available at launch through something called HDMI pass-through which will allow you to plug in a set-top box to your Xbox."

Saves you having to switch inputs.

I coulda sware i post that review already, was one of the first to go live last night.

Waiting on sess review of Ps to compare.

The HDD should really be replaceable, but they adding support for external storage, a bandage of sorts.

The dpad on the controller is one thing I really looking forward too, and with windows 8 drivers hitting early 2014, having one controller to rule them all will be very nice. For adventure games I prefer 360 over dual shock, it just more comfortable. But that dpad.....And seeing that I buying this console for KI , they betters had get that dpad right.

The TV functions may be targeted at US base, but I have no intention of using it as such, I'm going to be piping xbmc through the TV interface.......:)..... and then use an xbmcremote app on phone/surface to control. Also going to be using console for Netflix, youtube, etc. And as Wyatt point out, you don't need to be in the US, the US is required for the Xbox one guide. But u don't have to use that, its like a digital TV guide. You would loose some features, like saying, Xbox go to HBO. Cause the Xbox wont understand your provider, but u can still pipe it through for other advantages. Stuff I want it for. Like being in man of steel on xbmc and see an Xbox invite for ki popup on screen and I say, "Xbox accept", and switch and start game one time. (at which point I can use my phone to pause xbmc whiles joining game. So you dont have to be watching actual TV, or US based TV, to get benefits from the passthrough feature.

All in all, I'm happy with what I see, as you point out, the good thing is, if u dont want the features, don't use it, you can unpin everything, and disable always on, Kinect, etc. And just use d controller to do everything and get a pure gaming box if that's what u want. But if u want more, its there as well.

Have to wait to see how big of an issue the 500gb drive going to be. Currently I have 300gb of ssd storage for games on my beast pc, and that's more than enough. I used to keep a 2nd path on my sata storage for other games, but then I realize  I wasting time cause the other games I never really play and it just taking up room for no reason, and d speed of net dese days, if I want something back, just download it. For eg, I had borderlands 1 and all dlc installed picking up space, and I never playing that again. So my 300gb ssd is fine for my use case. 500 on Xbox should be more than enough, I more want to be able to replace it to install an ssd or hybrid drive. Not too concerned with space.

I just thought of something as well. The Xbox one has an IR blaster, which you can program to turn on ur receiver, TV etc. Adjust volume on ur Dac etc. There are IR based receivers u can use on ur pc to control xbmc with a traditional remote............., so have Xbox one use its ir blaster to send the same commands to the xbmc receiver thus controlling xbmc using Kinect, and I could code my xbmc input file accordingly, giving me most of them live TV features on xbmc via Xbox one :laughing7:

Come next weekend the modding shall commence!

Which Flow 'set-top' box is that?
I have the regular-ass small one with co-ax and composite outputs.

...and my opposable thumbs make 'switching inputs' a cinch.

lol @ composite

big techie like you boy Arc???

I fling away that old "SD" box long days and got this from Flow (since last world cup)

Connections galore! Component, HDMI, Optical Out (with Dolby Digital 5.1 for my Logitech Z5500), you name it. This box has it.

Wasn't very expensive too. Like $25 more than the regular box I think.

There is a noticeable increase in quality for SD channels as well.  Suspected it was doing some sort of upsampling but Flow technicians tell me the enhanced picture is just as a result of superior connections (hdmi / component) and not any post processing by the box itself.

Full specs below:
Embedded Digicipher® II Conditional Access support
In-band and out of band (OOB) tuners with RF return
Comprehensive and advanced device connectivity including HDMI™
4 LED indicators: Power, IR Receive, HD, Data
Enhanced on-screen diagnostics including Pace Diagnostic Dashboard
1000 Dhrystone MIPS Processor
32 MByte FLASH memory
5.1 Dolby Digital optical output
Ethernet port
SNMP support for remote diagnostics
DOCSIS 2.0 cable modem enabling DSG signaling support and Interactive Applications

tldr

You can connect your tv to your xbox with this baby, boom bang

One device to rule them all.

You never struck me as the "poor-me-one" type. Easy to ask the landlord to change the box to the Pace Tango HD and you'll handle him the extra $$

Picture is VASTLY superior.

I don't watch much TV so is really for the misses. It kicked ass for world cup though. Got my money's worth then.

Nothing worse than a big fancy 1080p LCD TV and you're running 480i composite. lol

Not even component self dan??

It's actually connected via co-ax, not composite.  That box doesn't even have component.

Wha we go do bai?  :laughing7:

Just tell them you want the PACE Tango HD

They will swap your existing standard definition box for it.
