Great points W1ntry. Totally agree.

And the situation is only going to get worse.

LtChiney, thanks for backing me up.

As you can see by the numbers he posted:
http://bf3stats.com/

Global stats
PC online 43 180
PS3 online 51 063
360 online 32 546

Console Total: 83,609
PC Total: 43,180

The Consoles are beating PC two to one....in BATTLEFIELD. Arguably the strongest PC FPS game on the planet.

Even that behemoth of a game is being played more on the consoles than the PC.

Imagine when xbox one drops the bomb.

gg wp no re

Arc, if you looking for some administrative work to do....feel free to move our posts on this most salient topic to the one I created here:

I actually thought chiney post was in favor of PC lol, funny how we look at the same numbers and interpret it differently.

Anandtech has a very nice article about the X-One, PS4, Mobile gaming, and the living room.
I invite you all to take a read.

I now finish read d article, very intriguing, I like what MS did, great times ahead for gamers. I especially like this part:

"Arguably the most interesting thing in all of this is the dual-OS + hypervisor software setup behind the Xbox One. With the Windows kernel running alongside the Xbox OS, I wonder how much of a stretch it would be to one day bring the same setup to PCs. Well before the Xbox One hits the end of its life, mainstream PC APUs will likely be capable of delivering similar performance. Imagine a future Surface tablet that was capable of doing everything your Xbox One can do. That's really the trump card in all of this. The day Microsoft treats Xbox as a platform and not a console is the day that Apple and Google have a much more formidable competitor. Xbox One at least gets the software architecture in order, then we need PC/mobile hardware to follow suit and finally for Microsoft to come to this realization and actually make it happen. We already have the Windows kernel running on phones, tablets, PCs and the Xbox, now we just need the Xbox OS across all platforms as well."

And I could see hackers now ripping that Xbox OS to port to PCs, s thing running on hyper-v, that should be relatively easy to extract, especially seeing u have a windows os running on the Xbox which allows easier hacking access to the subsystem. Hyper-v sucks in corporate, VMware just too good, but this implementation of it is smart.

Consoles are pc's without having to upgrade parts evry so often that said i'm a console man was a pc person a LOOOOOOONG time ago but got too lazy to keep to the latest trends not to mention brokes. Consoles give A little above average graphics in a box that plays a wide range of games without much upgrading, now it is known that a high end pc looks way better than a console when it comes to the cross platform but how many of you know at least one person that if you ask them their pc specs they tell you xp,vista or win 7.

Also and I only now noticed this... but why is the 'master race' all aryan looking white men? just thought i'd stick that in there or to put it bluntly, that's awful racist.

Good looking out W1n. +1

hard lol @ that master race image

+1 to you Mez

And Messiaah, you are absolutely right. Microsoft has all the key components to enter that mobile gaming space with aplomb.

It is an inevitable transition and when they do make it, Apple and Google will be in trouble.

For their sake, they better make it sooner rather than later because Android and IOS devices are ramping up to be an "unstoppable freight train" of mobile momentum.

Qloxx also touched on a key component....there are less and less "techies" coming up into the fray. On the other hand, every day hundreds of console gamers are born.

We are a dying breed and soon our numbers will be insignificant.

The messiah's, the arcmanovs, the captain awesome's.....I challenge you to name five new gatt members in the past year who have joined and show the level of tech savvy of these three?

If I go to my son's class and ask them what are the latest ATI or Nvidia graphics card on the market....they'll watch me and say "hodor??"

These same kids will be asking for an XBOX One / PS4 come Christmas.

Reality of the situation.

I excited for Xbox as a platform for the fact that ill be able to install it on meh PC. could care less about the mobile side of things.

And unfortunately technology is responsible for the dumbing down of the general population world wide. The trend you explain wyatt has been un-going for years. And I cant speak for gatt, but I do know a few young minds upcoming that can carry the "techie" torch into the next decade. But yes, we are a dying breed. Quite sad really...

The more 'advanced' consoles get, the more i'm watching it and saying that.. is a blasted miniATX PC
that i'm paying far more for branding, and the ability to use it on my tv screen, than i am for any ability.

I just don't see the point anymore, the longevity of PC GAMES vs consoles is another thing too, with steam I can easily upgrade to a completely new machine in 4-5 years or spend time slowly upgrading piece by piece without(hardly) ever having to worry that I Can't play the old Games on my new PC.

Furthermore the more I compare it, the more I much rather  have a PC that games, than a game machine that PC's
Cause a PC that games, usually does the latter far better than a Game machine that PC's #endrant

Microsoft's Don Mattrick talks Xbox One, calls backwards compatibility backwards

One of the more controversial bits of news to come out of yesterday's Xbox One reveal was the discovery that the newly christened console would not be able to play Xbox 360 games. Backwards compatibility has been a sore subject for some gamers but Microsoft's Don Mattrick says the company is looking forward, not back. "If you're backwards compatible," he told The Wall Street Journal, "you're really backwards."

While the news was met with some chagrin, it's not terribly surprising. The Xbox One's architecture -- equipped with a new x86 CPU -- prevents it from being able to run games designed for the 360's eight year old Xenon processor. Additionally, Mattrick claims that players making use of backwards compatibility were a negligible percentage of their consumer base. While Mattrick's words are sure to stick in more than one craw, they reflect the reality of the market. With Nintendo struggling to juggle Wii games on the Wii U and Sony's Playstation 4 abandoning current gen PSN games, it looks like backwards compatibility is a thing of the past.

So...we finally reach.

Want to 'lend out' your Xbox One games?  The borrower will have to pay a 'fee' to play it... http://kotaku.com/you-will-be-able-to-trade-xbox-one-games-online-micros-509140825

...and oh, you can't actually play your game on your own console console till you install it to the HDD (mandatory) and 'activate' it online.
The game is then tied to your account.  Looking more and more like that gaming PC eh?  :)

You can play your game on someone else's Xb1, provided you sign into your account.  It's 'free' that way.

Unbelievable.  :shakehead:

Mez, a console has been nothing more than a neutered HTPC since the PS3 / Xbox 360 era. lol.

Do not underestimate the power of branding.

When Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo  start an all out advertising war for their systems, consoles will gain immeasurable mind share amongst the masses.

Who will stand for the PC? I doubt messiaah gonna fund a US$100 million dollar campaign.

Our best (and only) hope lies with Gabe Newell and some iteration of the steam box.

Offer a full fledged PC to drop into your living room that can go toe to toe with the PS4 / Xbox One at a similar price point (say us$599.00)  8 Core APU, 16GB Ram, 1terrabyte HD with a marketing campaign to end all campaigns and boom, we may have a fighting chance.

On the topic of backward compatiblity, I have never played a xbox original game on my xbox 360 (nor desired too)

Never played a game cube game on my wii

Never played a PS2 game on my PS3

Not really seeing it as a big deal.

What about the rest of you?

I understand that Wyatt, with a new generation of consoles comes a new generation of game, see thread fifa 1- infinity
however. Not wanting to play a game when a new console comes out doesn't mean you should necessarily be devoid of ever really having that opportunity unless you hang onto and keep in pristine condition the system itself.

Another thing
Anything you can do I can emulate better!

Well there is an opportunity cost (as with most things)

Do I

A ) Invest millions of dollars in adding old xbox code and hardware, increasing the cost price and taking up precious silicon space on my new console to offer backward compatibility to a fraction of my potential user base that will require / demand this feature?

Or

B ) Skip this feature altogether, run a less complex and more efficient system and profit (running the risk that my competitors may offer this feature and see an exodus of old customers driven into their arms)

http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2013/04/talking_point_how_the_ps4_will_put_an_end_to_some_of_the_ps3s_biggest_issues

Looks like the competitors aren't doing backward compatible either.

So they have nothing to lose.

Well I use my PS3 to play all my PS2 Ace Combat games eh.   I was happy to give my cousin the PS2 because of the PS3's backwards compatibility.

It was also great to be able to play all my older PS1 games on my PS2 as well, so I had no problem giving away the PS1 as well.

The lack of backwards compatibility will be a deal - breaker for many.  I know quite a few people with very large libraries... XBLA games included, that are mighty pissed about this.

You already have a steambox Mez.

lol

Steambox is for the "non techies" who don't understand how to connect an HDMI cable from their PC to the TV in the living room.

@Arcmanov

Both Microsoft and Sony are willing to bet those "miffed" by the loss of backward compatibility will still buy the nexgen consoles.

I think they are right.

Alternative??? SALT

I wouldn't be surprised if they have a gentleman's agreement to leave out that feature for both of their sake's.
