The next-generation Xbox may be codenamed "Durango." Crytek senior technical designer Sean Tracy wrote the following message on Twitter: "Enjoying the Durango developers summit in London. So far, great swag and interesting talks." Tracy deleted the tweet soon after it went live. Keep in mind that Durango likely wouldn't be the final name of the project, similar to the Wii U's Project Cafe codename. Previously, the successor to the Xbox 360 has been largely referred to as Xbox 720, though that codename has never officially been sanctioned by Microsoft. Rumors last year also suggested that the system was codenamed "Loop." For now, Microsoft hasn't made any announcements about its next console, and all codenames are only a rumor. Source: Eurogamer
The next Xbox won't contain a physical disc drive, according to a new report. A source close to British trade magazine MCV claims that Microsoft revealed this information under what it described as "the strictest NDA" they have ever encountered. While the console will not contain a disc drive, according to the source, the report suggests it will contain "some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage, although it is not known whether this will be proprietary or a more standard format such as SD." MCV is also claiming that a 2013 release window for the hardware has been confirmed. A move to digital-only distribution would be extremely unconventional for Microsoft; if there is any truth to this report, it would be a major blow for traditional retail. Microsoft has yet to officially deny the story. In response to the report, Microsoft has said, "We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention. Sources tell Polygon that the next Xbox will indeed have some form of an always-on requirement. That will be both to support the suite of non-gaming entertainment applications that will be launched alongside the console, like streaming video services, but also as a possible anti-piracy tool. Currently, the console will support digital rights management and anti-piracy checks using an internet connection. Under Microsoft's current guidelines, which may still be changed, the decision of whether a game will require an internet connection to work and if that is a one-time authentication or a constant connection, will be left up to individual publishers.THE NEXT XBOX WILL ALLOW PUBLISHERS TO DECIDE IF THEIR GAMES SHOULD REQUIRE AN INTERNET CONNECTION TO BE PLAYED.The fact that offline gameplay, always online and one-time checks are supported, means that in the future, publishers will have much greater control over copyright protection for their games.
LOLThat is hilarious but I'm not sweating it.Always Online games are the ultimate answer to piracy.Expect that trend to continue far into the future as the world is only going to become more connected.For every two failed implementations you can find a hundred that worked.Steam itself is the absolute success story for online drm.Consoles will inevitably embrace that model.I look forward to it because if steam is any indicator, it will mean a heavy drop in pricing for games as well. The shift to online and digital distribution has many pros, not just cons.
