Want to get a tv tuner box and maybe a new monitor
«

My simple upgrade plans for 2012. I want to get rid of my legendary 18 year old CRT television and perhaps use a monitor instead.
While some may ask: "Why replace a television that shows colours that are not actually visible to the natural spectrum?". The simple answer is space.
So i've come to the gurus of tech on the local scene. I'm thinking of getting a TV Tuner box and maybe (if the price is right) getting a bigger monitor or even a second as the dedicated tv, i'm currently rocking an AOC 22inch.
I'm completely new at this and a bit overwhelmed by what actually works out there. I'ld like to hook my Wii up too if possible, not sure if there are any that supports that. Don't necessarily need it to be HD, though that's not a reason to turn it down.
Anyone went down this path and has some advice?

I've not had to face this conundrum good sir. But may I suggest that ye purchase a TV instead and use it as a monitor?

Samsung P2770HD.....if you can get one.
Available on Amazon
.
Kickass TV, and even better monitor, and yes, you can connect your Wii to it.

+1 to Arc for the suggestion
That TV looks good though it is a whole lot steeper than a tv tuner. I will check to see if there is a 24inch version as well. I might be able to go dual monitors with a 24inch, the 27 will definitely have to sell this one.
EDIT: + to Doom for making sense for a change

I have a problem with using a TV as a monitor....seeing as they tend to introduce input lag. Especially an issue for gaming.
The Samsung Touch of Color monitors were particularly plagued by this.
The Non-TV LCDs offered better performance.
That said, what is your TV source?
Is it a flow cable box using the coax or composite connection?
If so, you can replace the regular cable box with an HD box from Flow that offers HDMI output.
In which case, any monitor can work as your TV. No need for a tuner nor a "TV LCD".
On the plus side, you will now also get Flow HD channels which will look much better than standard TV. (Regular channels get a boost as well from upsampling I think)

Good idea Wyatt, the only problem with that is my monitor has no speakers/HDMI port. I know i can get an HDMI to DVI cable but how do i split the video(HDMI to DVI) and sound(HDMI to
) from the cable box?

Well that plan would of course require a monitor that has HDMI input (and inherently native speakers)
My Asus VW266H is one such monitor

Thanks for the info. I'll take all of this in and make the decision+purchases around Jan/Feb. Hopefully i don't buy a TV/Monitor and then one of yours goes up for sale. ( I am watching you eh Arc)
As for using the TV as a monitor Wyatt, the TV will be the secondary monitor, really for TV, movies, and console mostly. Don't need it to be bigger than my current monitor either unless i am replacing.

So i've been looking around for the TV/Monitor, the current first choice is this:
http://ca.aoc.com/television/l32w961
-this is the 720 version there is supposed to be a 1080 version from Supertech for ~$3k. They don't have in stock right now though they claim they will be getting more at the end of Jan, which is when i was going to make my purchase anyway.
Still doing some shopping around but if you know of any place that should have what i'm looking for, please let me know, thanks.

Nooooo, saw that and quickly closed the thread. I really wondered if it was rendered though, the TV looks BETTER than real life? Picture sent by LG? Looks suspicious to me!
I'm up to 32" because of pricing and possible second party funding lol. I don't mind smaller though.
Still looking for a TV OR Monitor, but not coming across monitors with 2 or more HDMI+ RCA so i'm leaning towards TV.
