SOCOM II wasn't hard. It was challenging. It required patience, timing and a little luck to pull off missions with an acceptable rating.

Maniac Mode in Street Fighter EX2 plus was hard. Not really hard per se, but indeed, many sleepless nights would be spent trying to beat one of the missions therein.

The ULTIMATE in controller-throwing difficulty:

TMNT 1 for shizzle (never could pass that 1st top down level with the van)
ANY shooter (Lifeforce, 1942, etc) for the NES
Those dastardly Mega Man games for the NES (ESPECIALLY MM3!!!)
Phalanx (another shooter) for SNES
Silent Bomber for PS1 (a real gem though)
Ninja Gaiden (all) for NES

Comin to think of it, NES had all the super-hard games of yesteryear.
