NVidia NV40 chip
« on: February 15, 2004, 12:29:32 PM »
yeah i know i copy and paste articles but if guys dont like it let me know plz

NVidia claims about its, upcoming, NV40 chip are beginning to raise hopes that the graphics war may truly be back on. Even though the claims about the new chip may seem extravagant, they do seem to suggest that the new boards will correct quite a few of the misgivings of the current core which has kept NVidia playing second fiddle to Canadian rival ATI.

According to the inquirer.net, the new core will enable cards to run four times faster in Doom 3 and seven times faster in Half Life 2 then its current fastest product. In order to back-up such extravagant claims the company indicates that the NV40 will support the shader models 3.0 that it claims are in DirectX 9.0c and that the new chip will have three times the performance and eight times faster shaders than the NV35. If any of this is even remotely close to the cards actual performance then the graphics speed crown will really be up for grabs this time round.

The NV40 is expected to run at between 450 and 550 MHz with the faster versions gaining the coveted U or Ultra marking while the memory will be GDDR 2 or 3. NVidia has also been working on keeping the noise levels down on the new boards, so expect an improvement there too.

Although sample boards should be out this month, cards are expected to become available in April while the official announcement is expected during this year's CeBit exhibition i.e. Thursday 18th of March.

wonder if they made the shaders stick to the 24 bit level :D .that was one of the major problems in the NV 30-38 range . Graphic war mean cheaper prices . always good for consumers

lol @ clutchin chest :D

It is interesting news indeed. Perhaps my predictions were true that nVidia would return to the top in 3 or 4 production cycles? Only time will tell. Can't wait to see ATI's response :)

"Once the Nvidia PR machine kicked into gear information about the NV40 has been flying all over the WWW. ATI has hardly had a chance to complain about important leaked information or to accidentally drop some papers in an exhibition floor.
As launch time approached and as the hype on Nvidia made the NV40 seem more like a space shuttle than a simple graphics card, ATI has had to react and has finally managed to misplace some vital R420 information.

There will be two versions of ATI's new chip. One based on DDR1 and one based on the DDR2 variation, also known as GDDR 3. The DDR1 boards have been codenamed Skateboard while the second R420 boards will get the more prestigious Olympic Snowboard codename.

All R420 based cards will be AGP 8X and VGA, DVI and VIVO ready and will support DirectX 9.0c meaning that they will be pixel shader 3.0 ready.

The high end boards will carry the XT mark, not a great surprise there, and will run at 500MHz for the GPU and at about 1000MHz for the memory. They will carry 256 MB of memory (8x32) with a 256-bit bus. "

well i was gonna post the specs of  pci x and pci express
but theres alot fo semi confusing info there that you should just read your self.

Taken from Tom's hardware
http://www20.tomshardware.com/motherboard/...0301/index.html

i also spotted something about intels new chips, iam about to take a read, its in the same article for all those interested.

they caught my eye with the title

Socket 775: CPUs Without Pins.

so take a read fokes.

one thing of mention.
pci x isnt intended for desktops.

pci express is said to have a 4x speed multiplyer over all agp types.

i.e agp 8x (times 4!)

Just a FYI.

When quoting artices, please put links to the articles.  Do I have to talk about concepts such as "fair use" and "attribution of source"?

No need to post the full article, either.  A sentence or two is fine.

the only pci express that got 4* agp bandwidth are the pci express 16x & 32x these basically have 16 and 32 lanes of pci express bandwidth . as for the processor without pins i kinda worried how u going to to attach the heat sink for maximum effect as u can see with the pic the bracket is over the cpu. Also the new heat sink for the btx form factor suppose to be 1 kilo ( suppose not to have a fan on hit pure passive cooling but have a exhast and input fan on the case to help remove the heat) :( . biggest heat sink i see id for a G4 mac that got nofan on it but i guess it weight 1/2 a kilo that got a 100 mm fan pull out the heat but the system real quiet

fans are sooooooooo... i hate them

its ridiculous that we are still pushing air around!

there is something i wanna try

there is this kick ass coolant that is completely de ionised. so it conducts no electricity

you drop yur pc into an aquarium  filled with it, then cool the coolant and yu get massive cooling power.

Its supposedly perfectly safe but yu know, people will ben at the idea of dropping there pc into an aquarium of liquid
