Two internet connections, one home network...
« on: May 25, 2012, 01:19:47 PM »
So I now have two Flow connections.  :happy0203:

One is my own Turbo 15 Mb, the other, the landlord's 25 Mb.

I currently have my entire home network on my 15 Mb, but my plan is to put the download PC and media streaming PC
on that 25 Mb, but still be able to access them from my gaming PC.

I already have two routers.  One (Asus RT-16) is connected to the 15 Mb, and my network is hosted on that router.

The other one (Linksys WRT54G) is connected to the 25 Mb, but nothing else is connected to that as yet.

I'm trying to figure out a way for the download and media PCs to coexist on both networks, but use ONLY the 25 Mb for internet access.

Point of note: the media PC is on a wireless connection, so I don't think
it will be possible to have it on two networks simultaneously, but the download PC
is wired.  I know I'll have to put a 2nd NIC in it.

* looks for suitable NIC *

Help me brainstorm this one...

Interested in the outcome of this as i've been contemplating it (with Blink and Flow) for a long time, without having to purchase an enterprise level modem. o_O

simple enough

make it one big happy network with two gateways.

Disable DHCP on one and voila.

Problem solved.

So say you set Router 1 192.168.0.1 (Flow 15)

and you set Router 2 192.168.0.2 (Flow 25)

HTPC
192.168.0.100
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.1 (Flow 25)

Gaming PC
192.168.0.101
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.2 (Flow 15)

They will all be on the same network just fine but will use different gateways for internet access

OK, so I did some fiddling, and I finally got things to work 'mostly' how I want...

I put the media-PC (wirelessly) on the Linksys router.  No issue there.  It will access Netflix, Hulu, et al with aplomb.
By default, its gateway is the 25 Mb connection.  It will never 'see' my home network (the Asus), so I can game and stream media at the same time.

I installed a 2nd NIC in the download-PC.  The 1st NIC is connected to the Asus router with a static IP, and with no Gateway or DNS addresses set,
so all the devices on my home network can still access all the shares on that PC.  The 2nd NIC I connected to the Linksys router, with full settings
for Gateway, and DNS, so any internet traffic passes through that connection, and does not harass the Asus Gateway at all, so my main home network
is unchallenged when uTorrent and Alt.Binz are working that 25 Mb.

I verified that all devices are using the correct Gateways with plenty 'ping' and 'tracert' commands, so I'm good to go.

...oh and the media-PC can still access all the shares on the download-PC, by virtue of them being on the Linksys router,
which is what I wanted.  I didn't really need devices on my main network to 'see' the media-PC at all.

So now I can download whole day, whole night, and still shoot-up Notnice and dem when ah ready without issue.  :happy0203:
