Facebook Messenger (Death to BBM)
« on: August 11, 2011, 06:26:26 AM »
Facebook has come out swinging with a new mobile messaging app for iOS and Android called Facebook Messenger.

A direct attack on RIM's near ubiquitous BBM app.

https://www.facebook.com/mobile/messenger

No love for Windows Phone 7 nor Blackberry smart phones (does symbian still count as being in this race?) so don't run off to delete Whatsapp for cross platform chat just yet.

Still....this is an interesting development.

Note, limited to the US at initial release but one could well expect an international roll out in the coming months.

Surprised its taking them this long to have their own mobile messaging platform.

But wow @ maccos going mobile now. It could only go downhill from now on.

Maybe its a standalone app that is much more accessible than the built in chat in the ordinary FB app. I gotta say it is too inconvenient to get to that chat feature in its present state.

@ wyatt... facebook messenger and facebook are integrated into windows phone... it does not require an app...

and also as somebody stated before.. thus far i see nothing groundbreaking here... sure it might be a more efficient offering to a 3rd party app but bleh news really

Yeah, facebook messenger is a stand alone app, like BBM. Not the integrated facebook chat.

Confusing, I know.

Blackberry Messenger, Facebook Chat, Facebook Messenger, etc....

No doubt they're counting on some nomenclature confusion to gain market penetration. lol

I assume the reason its not on Windows Phone 7 is the same reason that Whatsapp isn't on Windows Phone 7. MS won't allow direct access to your contact database by third party apps (for the moment).

The dream for one chat app to rule them all remains just that, a dream......but we are getting closer with every such release.

wyatt didnt u watch d video? D app is not on windows phone 7 is because it is not needed :S
D built in SMS portion of Windows Phone 7 can also send messages on d msn network and d facebook chat network. Why u want a chat app to do what d native operation of d phone can? It have nothing to do with access and whatsapp. Microsoft have a strong partnership with facebook, and d integration of FB services will be better on windows phone dan any other platfor.  A chat app for Windows Phone is redundant. Especially seeing how epic d fb chat functions of mango already works, i know, i use it everyday.

hard lol @ that precious pic. +1

Yeah, when whatsapp for Windows Phone 7 hits the scene, that will be as close to the "one" ring as we'll get.

I'm not convinced that FB chat on WP7 will be as feature rich as the stand alone FB Messenger app.

If Mango provides the api that whatsapp needs, then maybe it will facilitate FB Messenger as well?

not as feature rich ? :S

Is a chat app lolol, send and receive messages and pictures, what else u want? lolol.
And FB messenger integrated into d OS. So i have a pic of my wife pinned to d homescreen, so i coudl juss tap dat and msg her imediately, wihtout going to d messaging hub of d phone.

Also groups on your phone integrated in d same way. So i create a group on my phone for d office, so i could group email/msn/fb everyone in dat group, in 2 clicks. (without opening ah app).

D speed, efficiency and integration of msn/fb chat in mango, is beyond epic. and no other chat client will ever come CLOSE! to what it can do. FTR i tried these:

Kik, IM+, TinyText, TigerText, FIM (facebook chat app on wp7 btw lolol, it already has one that works bess, ) But none of them coudl ever trump a service integrated into d core of d phone. Is like skype would be when they do it. Dont have to open ah app called skype, den search for a contact, den press call, ill be able to open your contact card from d phone, and it have "Call skype" right there.

And windows phone 7 ties FB contacts to your Windows live contacts, and your Exchange / Outlook contacts. so if u on msn/fb/and phoen contact, i seeing 1 person to msg/email/call.

Wyatt i dont think u really understand what it is going on in mango. And you soudning very noob with d fb app argument, quit whiles you're ahead, fb chat app will never be better than mango. Youtube FIM, its d fb chat app for windows 7 before mango hit d scene.

Here: FIM For WP7

Did i mention, that msn/fb chat is always online on wp7 like bbm. No app launching / signing in process.
And their are some added bonuses. If you chatting on d pc, d phone knows you're chatting, and haults d messages from going to your phone. If you stop reading d msges on your pc, d phone knows to start delivering d messages to your phone. That way, if you sit down chatting on pc, your phone wont be going crazy with alerts. So it allows me to be online in msn/fb chat, in multiple locations simultaneously, and not receiving anoying alerts i dont need. Pickup my phone and go ds to find food? bam, msges start hitting d phone, everything seemless and intelligent.

FB Chat app fail in comparison. and d skype network soon to be added to that sweet sweet mango messaging experience.

lol... i still cracking up at the thought of needing a facebook messenger for wp7... btw... besides being integrated with chat... facebook's other social networking features are also integrated with WP7...

so unless facebook messenger offering something other than what facebook offers... i don't see it being necessary
