TriniWyatt's Gaming PC
« on: April 28, 2011, 11:30:27 PM »
Fellas,

Its been a year and Sandy Bridge is here. Just in time for my birthday. So instead of the usual socks and van heusen's, time to upgrade!

The Relic:

CPU: E6850 3000Mhz (Core 2 Duo)
MOB: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L Core 2 Quad/ Intel P35/ DDR2-1066/ A&GbE/ ATX Motherboard
RAM: 4GB Meemselfknow DDR2-800 Memory (2x2)
GPU: ATI 4870 1GB (Not Changing)

Benchmark results:
http://3dmark.com/3dmv/3128532

3DMark Vantage: P7676

The Destiny:

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core($224.99)
MOB: GIGABYTE GA-P67A-D3-B3 LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA ATX Motherboard (US$114.99)
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) 3-12800CL9D-8GBXL (US$99.99)
GPU: ATI 4870 1GB

(Note, all prices taken from newegg, feel free to say if you find a better deal elsewhere)

The Budget:

US$447.30

Planning to change the video card in the future (in time for Battlefield 3)

Or should that video card change come before?

Sound off with your usual advice. I am all ears. Expect to make the purchase first week in May.

Needless to say...some parts maybe hitting the trading grounds soon after this upgrade takes place.

why not go for a Core i7 one time? Unless the price difference is too much out of ur budget then fine.

Considering all u play is LoL, the GPU can stay till Battlefield 3. By then the current high end cards will be reasonably cheaper and powerful enough to run anything else for the next 2-3 years.

You'll need to upgrade the vid for the glory that will be bf3. Sure it'll run on your card reasonably i'm sure, but for the DX11 effects and sheer wow factor, you will need to change. I am finding it hard as I have a damn powerful card (still up in the 3rd slot on Tom's) 4870X2... but for DX11 and the oooooo and aaaahhhhhh I will need to move on... I think yuh good with i5 daz jes me.

Doh study dem.  Numerous tech sites have proven those Sandy Bridge Core i5 CPUs,
especially the 'unlocked' K models, are beastly CPUs.  The gains you'll get with the
current Core i7 models are minimal, unless you plan on running a multi-GPU config.

Indeed. Was going all out for bf3 but I think the most i'll do to my current setup is MAYBE change video cards and that is a big maybe.

seconded.... well i wouldnt exactly say the gains are minimal... but for your needs.. you certainly dont need to spend the extra $100 for that... if you running fine of a C2D right now (which has certainly lasted you awhile) the core i7 wont make to much sense.

@ GPU... upgrade your GPU just before BF3 release to get the best price... because you know how these things go.

edit: no objections with the parts selected...

Capn you don't even need to as your card is DX11 already. And heck if the DX11 path isn't much better looking than the DX10 path I may not upgrade at all either.

you plan to do little to no overclocking with that motherboard right? that board is rather bare and basic.... wonder if i'm wrong for saying so, cause no one else seemed to mention that.

I still trying to figure out why a P67 board have a LPT port in this day and age!

Get this one, Wyatt!

overclocking is much less dependent on boards nowadays, so once it running the p67 chipset he will get something out of it.. i doubt he gonna be overclocking to the point where he need high end coolers and what not..

this board should well be able to handle...

otherwise if you spending any extra money on a board i would recommend something in the asus p8p67 line

Out of all the Sandy Bridge motherboards, the Asus P8P67 Pro is my personal
favorite.  I would buy that one in a heartbeat.

Glad to hear you have no issue with the component selection phoenix.

hmm, arc/saxman, must admit the Asus P8P67 Pro and GA-P67A-UD4-B3 looking good.

They'll both bust my budget though

Philo is right, I don't plan to overclock nor go multigpu, hence the elcheapo mobo. Getting the 2500k just in case bf3 needs a little extra hp.

Should be interesting to see where video card prices are at when Battlefield 3 drops.

As of today, my eyes are on the 6950 or the GTX 560

You self, the very fact that you're getting a 2500K, means that some level of OC
should be the bare minimum.  :)  Look how effortlessly these things reach 4 GHz.

Not even a little bump self?  I could do it -for- you.  :happy0203:

I was scrutinising your initial mobo choice a little more, and I must say, for the price,
it really is a solid choice, but the boards myself and Sax mentioned give you a LOT
more flexibility...especially on the USB/audio front.  That said however, the overriding
issue here is budget.  That one word makes all the difference.

I think you might still be able to bump things up a little with that mobo, but only if
you invest in a proper CPU cooler as well.

You sure you can't bump the budget up a 'little' to $500 US?  You won't regret it.
You'll be amazed how much your options would increase as well.
