This guy has some good points on the Nokia/Microsoft deal. It will be interesting to see how things play out though the whole Meego/Symbian OS fragmentation definitely wasn't a good idea.

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/print/9209198/Mike_Elgan_Why_Nokia_is_toast?taxonomyName=Smartphones&taxonomyId=75

Quote
It's hard to remember now, but there was a time when Finland was at the center of the cell phone universe. As cell phones overtook pagers, then smartphones overtook cell phones, Nokia was the hottest company in the industry.

No more. Nokia now finds itself standing on a "burning platform," according to CEO Stephen Elop. Other clichés might apply. "Sinking ship" comes to mind.

The new center of the cell phone industry is Silicon Valley, where Apple and Google are headquartered. (Silicon Valley is also the home of HP, which suddenly finds itself a player again with its new Pre3 and Veer phones.)

Apple and Google are winning because they have winning strategies. Nokia is losing because it has a losing strategy. It's as simple as that.
Along comes Microsoft

Nokia and Microsoft this week announced a new partnership that would replace the Symbian operating system with Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 as the software for Nokia's smartphones, which accounts for some 30% of their handset revenue.

The company will continue to support Symbian and MeeGo platforms in very limited ways.

The deal also involves adding Nokia Maps into Microsoft's maps, and Nokia's app store, called Ovi, will be folded into Microsoft Store. The companies will work together on marketing.

The deal involves all kinds of other agreements that essentially bring Microsoft goodies to Nokia in exchange for the widespread distribution of Windows Phone 7 on Nokia's phone.

Nokia's stock price tanked, and hundreds of employees stormed out Friday in protest of the Microsoft deal. They no doubt suspect, rightly, that the deal will involve sweeping layoffs.

After the news, a huge fight broke out online over whether the deal was good or bad for Nokia. The good-for-Nokia camp says Microsoft software and developer tools are just what the company needs to break it away from the stale, unappealing and outdated Symbian platform.

The bad-for-Nokia crowd says that hitching its wagon to another loser in the smartphone wars isn't going to save the company. Google VP Vic Gundotra tweeted ungenerously that "Two turkeys do not make an Eagle." Ouch!

My view is that Microsoft doesn't matter. Although Windows Phone 7 is a way better operating system than Symbian, Nokia's problem isn't Symbian, and the solution isn't Windows Phone 7.
So what's the problem?

Nokia is being clobbered by Apple and Google, each of which has a winning strategy.

Apple's winning strategy is extreme simplicity via its "closed" or "integrated" approach to hardware and software, as well as incredibly good industrial design.

Google's winning strategy is extreme flexibility via its "open" or "fragmented" approach to hardware and software.

Both these strategies have attracted millions of users and hundreds of thousands of apps.

Nokia's problem is that it follows the losing strategies of the other losers in the market, and rejects the only two known winning strategies.

Nokia has a few really nice phones. But many Nokia phones are ugly like cheap generic Chinese no-name phones. When people think of a Nokia phone, which they usually don't, they think of some silver, bland, generic phone that nobody wants. Nokia's pretty phones are overshadowed by the ugly ones.

There are way too many Nokia phones. This causes either choice paralysis, sending buyers screaming to Apple for relief, or buyer's remorse.

Nokia should take the advice Steve Jobs gave to Nike CEO Mark Parker: "Just get rid of the crappy stuff and focus on the good stuff."

And Nokia branding is cold and soulless like the branding of Korean giants Samsung and LG. Phones are sold like commodities. Most phones are differentiated only by numbers, for example.

In a nutshell, Nokia fails on design, branding and simplicity. Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 will solve none of these problems.

To demonstrate my point, I'd like to submit Exhibit A: The Nokia Web site.

Like so many European consumer electronics companies, the Nokia site looks like it was built by a government agency. Instead of seducing you with design like Apple's site does, the company forces you to pick a region. When you do that, the second step is to pick your country. Wow, Nokia. Way to hook 'em!

Right off the bat I know that, as an American, I'm going to get screwed. The U.S. carrier standards mess means Nokia is going to make its best phones for other countries. Sigh! OK, let's soldier on.

A couple more steps and, if I'm lucky, I can start looking at an infinite range of tiny, generic-looking phone thumbnail pictures.

Hmmm. Let's see. Do I want the Nokia E72, or the 3710? The 7020 or the 2730? The 7020 is a bigger number. Is that better? What's the difference between these phones. Ugh! I have to go in and read huge lists of features to see the differences? What if I get the wrong one? I see the C6, but a friend of mine said the C7 is awesome. Where's the C7? Wait, do they even sell that in the U.S.? Is there a C4 and, if so, will it explode?

This is the Nokia experience. I'm already confused, frustrated, angry and insulted and I haven't even picked a phone yet.

When you go to the Apple site, there is only one phone -- Apple's best. You can't buy the wrong phone. You can't live in the wrong country.

Get it, Nokia? No, you don't.

Allow me to introduce Exhibit B: Japan.

For years, Nokia invested a fortune trying to break into the Japanese cell phone market, the fourth largest in the world. The company never broke the 2% market share barrier before pulling out in 2008.

Nokia decided the problem was the oversaturated Japanese market, and consumers' preference for Japanese brands.

Yet just a year and a half after Nokia's pullout, Apple was capturing an incredible 72% of Japan's smartphone market.

Apple succeeded in Japan where Nokia failed because Apple offered Japanese consumers better design, better branding and more simplicity -- not the opposite.
The right strategy for Nokia

Nokia's strategy has always been that more is better. That worked in the 1990s. But now that information and choice overload are killing everybody, that's the Mother of All Losing Strategies.

Nokia should have embraced Google, not Microsoft, for one simple reason: Android has apps.

However, now that Microsoft has been embraced, the winning strategy for Nokia is clear: Sell only two phones.

There is huge, unmet demand in the world for a phone that does nothing but make calls. Nokia can and should design and build the ultimate minimalist, tiny, super-reliable cell phone that does not connect to the Internet. It should have the best-possible call quality, have the best antenna possible and should measure battery life in days or even weeks. Nobody cares what the operating system is.

Second, Nokia should design and build the ultimate smartphone based on Windows Phone 7. It should provide a much better call quality than the iPhone (not hard to do), have a better camera, better screen, better everything than existing smartphones.

The company should ban Symbian, MeeGo, all product forking, ugly design and the use of numbers in model names. It should embrace radical minimalism and beauty in all hardware and marketing.

In other words, Nokia should embrace the winning Apple strategy. Getting in bed with Microsoft means the Google strategy is off the table. That leaves only one winning strategy left.

Of course, Nokia executives would laugh at this strategy. And that's why they fail.

(The Dell Streak has proven to be a tad out of reach).

The N900/Maemo was great in its own right, but times have changed...quickly,
and the future support just aint there.

Android is where it's at.  The hardware ticks all the right boxes, and the stunning

Yeah, I love my Android phone.

The ONLY thing I dont like abt it is that there is no OS level proxy support WITH authentication.

So if you have an ISA or TMG server running in your corporate environment and wanna connect through it, you're $hit outta luck.

I bought a nice Shiny Samsung Focus last week.
And as soon as i see dat E7+WP7, is SALE!

Best decision nokia ever made, because symbian and mego is shit.

And android is juss another wm6.5, i dont like it, interface sucks, and feels slugish compared to wp7. But it have d apps ill give dem dat, IOS and Android get dev support.
But d advent of nokia in MS camp go resolve dat.

Over 8k apps in ms appstore already.
And i done find apps to do everything i used to do on 6.5 and more.
Have 200+ brand new apps waitin theyt o test, apps i eh know what to do wiht.

And nokia's move go juss make that better.

Nokia+Ms was d biggest news of MWC, overshadow evertyhing.

GO MICROKIA!

FLAME ON! :)

P.S. WP7 Multitasking/App Switching looking bess. Men listening, and fixing busy busy.

Man why you hating on Android interface? All manufacturers have their own customized interface so which ONE you have a problem with?

Interface sluggish? Have you actually used a proper device for more than one day to confirm that? Just another 6.5, that's your opinion. Completely disagree btw.

As it is now, I can do everything I wanna do on my Nexus 1 so I have absolutely no intention of switching in the near future.

D interface is so yesteryear, its wm6.5 with spb mobile shell, which ive used for years.
I think spb is better to be honest, more information at a time on a given screen, less scrolling through endless homescreens.

And i always hated IOS with d icons shit, i want to see info, not icons.

And d android interface juss feels slow and sluggish, coudl jus be d devices i use i eh know.
But when i see d demo of dem dual core androids run, it din look much better. 1.2 DC to run like that? FAIL! IOS interface much sleaker, but d icons thing fail.

WP7 find d best balance, and its fass, really fass. My HD2 runin dat shit like butter. Cant wait for d focus to reach.

Only reason i wil go android, is if it have ah specific app on d platform i cant get anywhere else. Becuase i dont like anything else about android save d apps.
So once i coudl get d apps i need wp7, dies where i going.

Actualy was going to buy one of dem DC Android, but after using wp7 myself.
I cant go back.

Ok, to each his own I guess. My Android has been running largely flawlessly since I got it.

I've seen the wp7 interface and it looks too simplified for my liking...its like a mini Xbox. They really cater to the socialite crowd. Me? I wanna get down and dirty, get command lines and interact directly with the hardware.

Maybe Christmas time i'll get a nice cheap WP7 device for my mother.

everything will seem normal until you use something better,

so awesome depends on the devices u've used before.

I've used android devices and yes the interface is jus like wm6.5 with mobile shell lol, which i'm using right now. But android not offering me anything my wm6.5 not (even apps cuz wm6.5 have all the apps you want, including connecting to your isa servers etc). i used to connect to work systems all the time with it.

That being said, i found wp7 interface to be simplified as well but the speed and efficiency it bringing nullifies that yes

You cant judge this one by looking at it... you actually have to use it to make a decision.
so for anyone who hasnt actually used a wp7 device, do it before comparing it to any other mobile OS

btw... @ the first post... that guy has an extremely narrow minded view. Nokia is loosing in the Smart Phone market. Not everything else. So they can stick with their "complex" strategy for everything else. They already have the most reliable minimalist cell phones. So it's the US Smart Phone market they trying to get back into now.
With a solid OS that's getting rave reviews and killing of Symbian and Meego in the smart phone segment they could definitely cut into that market share

So basically the major appeal of WP7 is the interface, if what I gather is correct? I can accept that, but that alone is not going to make me want to switch.

Also, not saying anything abt wm6.5, but honestly, if it was as good as Android it would not have been sitting out in toolshed since 2008. You may think it is as good but obviously the masses do not share that opinion.

I understand d poweruser aspect.
But i doing d same sort of things with my wp7 device, hacking d shit out of it.
Its ah bit harder cuase ms lock it down, but doing my thign reguardless :)

And for everyday use, i want dat simplified, glance and go interface.
More productive, get in and out of an email quicker, i spend rel time in my exchange inbox, wp7 makes it ah pleassure to use. and d Web browising jus sweet.
And other aspects of d UI i juss fine bess.

And d fact that it runin silverlight apps, satisfies all my hardcore needs. cause i jus coding my own shit, and talk done.

And like phoenix said, using is believing.

I was going to buy an android ah tell yuh. After using both Android, 6.5 and IOS.
And when i actualy USE wp7, it was GG!

I use all d platforms, WP7 juss brisssssssss.
Makes my daily operations ah hell-of-alot easier.

MS come good, first win7 resolving d vista blunder, now dis.
Dey come good. Nokia go take dem d rest of d way.

So functionality wise i not getting anything extra from android

Major appeal of WP7 for me is:

1) Interface + SPEED!!!!
2) FB Integration into d ppl hub, i dont have to open ah seperate app jus to see what man post.
3) Office integration (i use onenote heavily, and sycn via skydrive between all my machines, my phone is now part of dat relationship).
4) Sharepoint integration (nothing needs to be said here, WIN)
5) Live Notifications is brilliant, app dont have to be runing for me to get notifcatiosn from it.
6) Email support is brilliant.
7) IE browsing jus take win, and ie9 coming soon, wow.
8) Voice dialing actauly WORKS!
9) and i use Zune on d pc, and Zune on phone juss win because of dat, i use phoen as my car deck, some nice intelegent deceision in zune wp7 to complement that experince

Weather its IOS, Android or WP7, u more or less going to find any app to do anything. Obviosuly wp7 is ah little behind d game, but that not going to be ah issue atal, Especialy seeing d speed d marketplace grow.

So choice now is based less on Apps/Hardware, and more on what EXTRA/Different u getting from d platform. If i can do everything i can do on android, plus get ah Fast UI with all them addtional advantages MS have, then dies more bang for buck in my book.
If i go IOS i have to get somethign i cant get anywhere else.
Same for android.
WP7 juss top out in additional exclusive features.

I see no reason going from HD2+6.5+MobielShell to android other dan better hardware.
But there are alot more compelling reason to go from HD2+6.5+MobileShell to WP7.

Just to poke you here a bit, I WILL fight you down on the 'best browser' thing eh. Android default browser is by far the best on any device.

But yes, I hear yall clearly on the simplified interface and how it allows you to get shit done faster, im not gonna contest that.

For me though, I can get behind Android because of the nature of their strategy. Google's mobile strategy has been to build their OS in such a way that it is open and encourages community development.

Apple onthe other hand has taken the exact opposite strategy and built a closed eco system that is VERY well supplied with development resources.

This too, is a good strategy. My issue is that Microsoft has taken Apple's path and is now attempting to take their system which was built to be closed and open up selected components to the industry.

I believe that BECAUSE they are following in similar footsteps of Apple they will never be on top.

Its good, its really good.
When wp7 did release, i hold off on buyin devices, cuase i was waitin on...shall i say... MORE from ms. like multitasking etc.
D samsung focus has been around since release.
But having put wp7 on my hd2 and actualy using d shit.
I buy d samsung focus 7 days later.

Also, 1 good thign MS do, android flavors change so dam fass, 6 months from purchase, yuh dam software outdated. OTA updates ms doing wiht wp7, inject alot longer lifespan from ur device. D samsung focus i runign today, going to be able to do, what a wp7 phone could do chritmas. But i still sellin dat for ah nokia :)

And @ Capt.
Apple IS ontop. cant beat dem? Join Dem :)
And nokia is d best move ms make, bill engineer d takeover of nokia.
D CEO of nokia happen to be ah ex ms exec, who happen to be d 7th largest shareholder of MS? i smell a consipiracy afoot! lololol.
In any event, Nokia's large scale reach i think will allow MS adopting apple's approach, to get dem ontop. MS doh give up on nothing, dey go pump billions and billions into WP7 untill it succeed. Windows 7 case in point!
