Upgrading to a gtx 460 for crysis 2...make sense?
« on: February 06, 2011, 11:23:17 AM »
Well fellas just as the title states i've been waiting on crysis 2 for a long time and it will be out later this year and i am thinking about a small upgrade....what graphics cards would you all recommend so i can play crysis 2 in full HD goodness with full AA and all the other goodies.

Been looking at the msi version of the 460 mainly because the current 250gts i have works so well and can overclock really well...plus the twin frozr cooler just looks badass, or should i wait till closer to the game release and see what other cards come out and what price drops take place?

You should upgrade to TWO 460s, or else, what's the point?

If you're upgrading to a single card, it might make more sense to upgrade to a 560 Ti.
You're not going to see the kind of gains you're expecting with a single 460.

...and CryEngine is notoriously rapish on GPUs, despite optimisations.

You're going to need all the help you can get for Crysis 2.

560 is the way much much better than the 460

Yea bro as someone who has a GTX 260, I'll advise getting the GTX 560 ti lil later down this year in time for your game as the prices would have simmered down.

I plan to get a GTX 560 ti myself, most likely this one ====> MSI GTX 560 ti Twin Frozr IIOC 1GB

I think Hard O/C is right

Thanks to the game now being a console title, you can bet they were forced to optimize the living daylights out of the code.

From all accounts, its running smooth enough on the 360 (albeit @ low res...and medium quality settings)

1152x720 to be exact

That means any mid range PC should be able to handle it at HD with ease.

Unless of course they hit us a "blackops"

Humm looks like the 560 is a better way...but better still is a 580... a partner of mine has the evga 460 and he runs crysis at 1920x1080 with full AA and all that good stuff and he gets 40-50fps...that sounds like decent performance to me.

Yea but a 560 would last long than the 460 would before u need a new gpu.

Define 'full AA'.  At that  resolution, there's no way that you can achieve even 40 fps with anything more than 2x AA.

Pics, or it didn't happen  (...is all I'm sayin).

Remember there are different presets. He could have very well put it on entry level and just jacked up the aa. It would probably play well with one card in that case.

But cosign on getting a 560 ($260) over the 460 ($200). It just makes all kinds of sense springing that extra $60 to get *that* much more performance.

You should be fine with 36A, was trying to find somewhere that has a good listing of GPUs and their min required Amperage. What PSU you using btw?

Not sure if to follow this listing to heart but here it is anyway http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=104805.0;wap2

Here is another good read about someone wanting to get a GTX 560 Ti but concerned about power requirements http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=335925

It seems the only real problem would be getting the big baddies like a 580 or going sli with 470s but the other guys here would pitch in with more detailed info I'm sure

I noe ppl will laugh at meh psu but its works well...its the diablotek phd 650 paid like 1500tt for it (clearing and shipping) but i guess is good components it made out of....it is a heavy thing, had it about a year now no problems...i read that some ppl who did an actual power test on the thing says it actually puts out 38amps and not the rated 36amps..but who knows the internet is full of truths only right....LOLZ :D

Ok just read that the 560 needs 31amps and 500watt psu...you all think this to close to the 36amps and 650watt i have? should i really stick with the 460 which is 26amps and 450watt psu...this is just a temporary upgrade the main upgrade will come end of the year when sandy bridge and bulldozer settle down and i know how each overclocks

haha my smear campaign against AMD cards seems to be gaining traction muhahahah

nah but seriously, the 6950 seems to be a good performer, just based on my personal AMD experience, I find it hard to recommend them to anyone. How can I recommend a brand that has given ME ( and me alone...not talking about the multitude of AMD graphics users out there who have no issues) nothing but headache.
