Pinch of salt is right. But if true...IF, does it mean that AMD chips will finally be faster clock for clock than Intel chips? For the first time in what? 7 years?

I have high hopes for this actually. Coupled with an Asus Sabertooth 990FX chipset board, this could be an excellent middle ground (price and performance wise) between LGA 1156 and 2011 X79 Intel offerings.

Still, i'm inclined to wait and see what both teams have to offer in these respects. Go with the 'budget' minded amd route or go all out with x79 and PCI-E 3.0 for future cpu and graphics proofing? Hmmmmmm what to do.

I will have to see how this lines up price/performance-wise against LGA 2011
before I make a choice.

...and if the overall price of upgrading too vicious, well, LGA 1366 still running
everything I can throw at it, and then some.  Might just end up getting some
beefier graphics-cards and call that Arcmanov.

As much as the upgrade bug has been biting for the longest while, I with arc on this one. I'll wait to see what 2011 brings and for what price and make a decision based on that.

Short of that, a couple of upgraded nvidia's and im good to go for another year.

The only thing keeping everyone in the wings is the fact that AMD Bulldozer (Desktop) parts are delayed until September... yes you heard me right, 2 mofo MONTHS. Their 12/16 Core Opterons will ship on time, however the high-end desktop parts won't at least if the net is to be believed. So either way guys, relax and enjoy what you got, we won't know who has the better bang for buck for another 2 months (tops I hope).

Hmmm...AMD having trouble 'getting it up'? Clock speed that is. Does not bode well for the overclocking crowd. Shame if those cant be used to their full potential.

Also, dont forget Intel is yet to release their Sandy Bridge 'E' offerings (Oct-Dec and until both companies release their wares, a proper comparison cannot be made.

Good news is that given those timelines, there's still hope that things could fall into place just in time for Battlefield 3. Of course, if the beta plays well on my machine, f***k upgrade.

AMD gets Guiness World Record for fastest CPU with overclocked octa-core FX processor

 Speed. It's of paramount importance in evaluating any computer system, and the engine that gives your PC its get up and go is its CPU. The folks at AMD wanted to show off just how awesome (and fast) their new Bulldozer-based FX chips can be, and set a Guiness World Record for the "Highest Frequency of a Computer Processor" while they were at it. To get the record, a team of "elite overclocking specialists" cranked up the juice on an 8-core desktop CPU until hitting a speed of 8.429GHz -- handily surpassing the previous mark of 8.308GHz. So, AMD's got the fastest silicon in the west and it's chipping away at Intel's processor predominance. What say you, Chipzilla?

AMD said Tuesday that the company's FX processors had been overclocked to an astounding 8.429 GHz.

AMD said in a blog post that the eight FX processors had been overclocked at speeds up to 8.429 GHz, beating the prior record of 8.309 GHz, using a third-party team of overclocking enthusiasts.

More importantly to the average consumer user, however, AMD found that the company's FX chips could reach over 5 GHz using normal air cooling or water-cooling rigs that cost less than $100.

"Based on our overclocking tests, the AMD FX CPU is a clock eating monster, temporarily able to withstand extreme conditions to achieve amazing speed," Simon Solotko, a senior manager with AMD, wrote. "Even with more conservative methods, the AMD FX processors, with multiplier unlocked throughout the range, appear to scale with cold. We also achieved clock frequencies well above 5GHz using only air or sub-$100 water cooling solutions."

AMD's announcement opens the Intel Developer Forum here in San Francisco, a developer conference hosted by AMD's arch-rival and much larger competitor, Intel.

What is overclocking? Historically, overclocking was a practice begun in the early days of the 486 and Pentium where a microprocessor was pushed past its rated speeds. Microprocessors are generally "binned," where each chip is tested to determine the fastest speed at which it can operate before it starts generating electrical faults and/or incorrect results due to the heat it itself produces. Within a PC, notebook computer or phone, these chips are generally either air-cooled using a series of "fins" that distribute the chip's warmth to the outside air via a fan. A sealed network of tubes, filled with water, can also be connected to a copper-based "heat sink," which thermally conducts heat away from the CPU.

Overclocking a chip can void its warranty, however, meaning that it's generally a risky practice even for enthusiasts. An overclocked chip that fails can essentially be destroyed, as can the motherboard or chipset components.

Extreme overclocking uses liquid helium and nitrogen to cool the chips; liquid nitrogen can push the chip's temperature down to less than 180 degrees centigrade. The risk here is a "cold bug," which can also prevent the chip from working. Fortunately for AMD, the team of overclockers found no such bug.

AMD's FX chips represent its enthusiast line of high-end chips, which are "unlocked," allowing users to set its operating voltage and clock speed multiplier in order to overclock the chips.
