Re: Your expectations for Bulldozer?

IMHO let me gaze into my crystal ball and tell you what I think is a reasonable expectation:

AMD will maintain prices because after all the cash they spend on this DUD, they have to recoup costs. Business dictates they will keep prices as stable as possible as long as possible

Intel with NO real competition will FOLLOW SUITE, allowing them to keep their current price structure and continue to make good, HOWEVER as NEW tech is released there is NOTHING to compare it to, they can simple get this: PRICE IT HIGHER. WHY you ask? because they CAN. They can afford to optimize and lower TDP making the margins HIGHER on EXISTING parts and specs. Keep the goodies for later IF AMD manages increases in performance.

End result, the consumer will see a LULL in tech progression and prices that would have changed regularly will now slow. We could very well see the SAME price for a sandy bridge NOW in 6 months from now. Why? because AMD have nothing to compete. Intel have NUFF lower end parts to fill in the SAME space AMD is competing in now and Wyatt, Intel is the cpu market LEADER in %  too, intel PWNS 80+ percent of Server CPUs and at least 75% of desktop. Not just that AMD has a higher POWER envelope in ALL their CPUs than intel.

Even notice AMD stopped yapping about performance per WATT a WHILE AGO? you know why? because Intel kicking their teeth in. We can all be optimistic, however as i've learnt many times, have no/low expectations so you're not disappointed too badly. Prepare for the price stabalization and innovation lull to follow. When it happens remember I told you.

We always strive to be proactive and open. Last week, AMD confirmed the transistor count in the AMD FX CPU line-up at 1.2 billion, a correction from the earlier count of 2 billion. The earlier figure of 2 billion transistors was unfortunately shared in error. This correction is not the result of a new revision to the Bulldozer design. The correct count of 1.2 billion applies to all recently introduced 8-core AMD processors that are based on the new Bulldozer core – AMD FX family of desktop CPUs and AMD Opteron™ family of server and HPC processors. We apologize for the confusion.

Everybody real hating on the BD chip yes...well I know alyuh fellas will flame be bad but small thing. I actually have a FX-4100 (the smallest contender) and to tell you the honest truth, it ain't bad for $108US. Clocks up to 4.6ghz with 1.33v and at that voltage it runs cool (50c) with my hyper212. It runs all games well, example @4.6ghz BF3 cpu usage is around 50% Sure it can't run benchmarks with the intels, but who the hell sits and benches all day :S if you do that well hats off to you, I actually use my system. I've even seen a graph where the FPS of a 2600K @stock speed and my chip @stock speed were about the same.

The 2600k was getting like 58fps in stalker and my lowly chip was right there with 55fps. But then again i guess some people like to spend 200US more for 2fps :D just my 5dollars and 25cents

lol AMD dude, dont study these men, most of whom are hardcore Intel fans, including myself but you do raise a valid point.

For a gamer on a VERY tight budget, AMD is still the only way to go.

If I may hazard a guess, what the fellas are hating on is the fact that it took AMD nearly two years and several delays to come up with an architecture that even with their latest flagship models, gets used as a mop by Intel and their midrange parts.

As it is now, AMD is a big joke when it comes to high performance, much like it was in the pre a64 days.

I was considering (deeply) a SB... 2500k before xmas... then I thought about it and heck I already owned a 1090T BE, which for gaming is damn good and I have 6 cores, which will hardly EVER get used (save when I using Adobe or such). The more I thougth about it the more sensible buying a new mobo and ram became and with black november and 45USD 8GB DDR3 1866, making it just a mobo for an AMD upgrade vs a mobo+cpu for the Intel upgrade to achieve what 10-15% increase in frames AT BEST? I'd be better off with a GPU upgrade.

I am very disappointed with AMD for the let down but the bottom line is they are still excellent for budget gaming where I reside. The money I saved on the Intel upgrade will now get me a new gpu, I am waiting on you guessed it AMD to release the 7870s to see what my GPU upgrade will be.

Well I'll be in the market for a CPU upgrade in Q1 2012

Already bit the bullet on the GPU upgrade.

AMD likely to have anything worth my while by say March?

Or is the I2500K / 2600K still the smart money?

Yeah. I am just about finish even checking up on AMD CPUs. I have learn't the hard way that there is no AMD CPU in the same situation as "High End."

Even their Flagship HD 6990 was giving me level licks 2 nights ago with drivers. The guys on mumble didnt even joke about it after a few minutes when they realize how serious the problem I faced was.

Sigh..
