Sandy Bridge: All Your Processors Are Belong To Us
« on: January 03, 2011, 11:50:26 AM »
Intel has done it again, gotten me truly excited about a CPU

I have been waiting for a US$200 Quad Core 3GHz or greater processor for almost three years.

Finally.....they have delivered.

The I5 2500K

And boy is she a beauty.

Full review on the Sandy Bridge line and all its goodness can be found here.

For me, that 2600k is a wet dream with that 57x theoretical multiplier ceiling and HT support.

Serious raised eyebrow @ that 4.4ghz on stock cooler. I wonder what kind of temps he got. It will be interesting to see what the default volts are on those chips and how much they were raised by from stock (if they were raised at all)

I personally much prefer multiplier overclocks as it shifts the heavy lifting away from the board.

Only boo boo i seeing on that platform is the single 16x/dual 8x pci-e bandwidth. Really Intel? in 2011? That will definitely put a damper on any multi gpu setup.

As tempting as this all is (and in trying to NOT break my new years resolution only on the third day XD), I still have my sights firmly set on Sandy Bridge gen2 lga2011 set for a q3-q4 launch. Hopefully in time for AMD and Nvidia's next round of gpu wars. Yes. Late 2011 will be upgrade mayhem in awesomeville.

Hot damn...its finally here, and what a refresh this is.  It seemed like just the other day
P55 (LGA-1156) came out.

4.4 GHz...stock cooler...on 'only' 1.27 volts?  Ridiculous.  My CPU needs 1.48 volts
and a MONSTER of an air cooler to achieve that.

...and yeah, according to the article, the 2600K look like the CPU to get for this platform,
and it right there in the 'enthusiast' price segment.

It may be just me, but I feel going back to dual-channel from triple-channel seems like
a step back.  I hope that LGA-2011 turns out to be 3-channel though, although I
don't think it will honestly make that much of a difference performance-wise.
The best part, is that its release will fall right in line with my yearly upgrade cycle.

I smell upgrades in Dec 2011.  :happy0203:

Quad Channel, madness.

I couldn't help but laugh at this guys comment re: intel's integrated graphics on the CPU

...and who say you can't enjoy P67 with your Lynnfield (LGA-1156) CPU?

Asrock certainly doesn't think so...

Asrock P67 Transformer

So you can officially ditch that P55 mobo, and upgrade to P67 with this.

With the right cooling...not a problem for these CPUs.  You can get up to 4.4GHz
with the stock Intel cooler, so 5GHz is pretty much doable with anything better.

So that means u need like a few years to ketch up nah? :D

So far AMD cpus only competitive in price, Intel still holds the performance crown. Even their 2500K for near $200US kicking ass along with the 2600K.

Yea for real these new intel chips really running, but yea i still like the amd underdog thing, when bulldozer comes out who knows what might happen...remember they saying its something with the 2 cores communicating directly not any hyper-threading there and they clam 40% increase in performance over current chips and then again who knows...maybe it will be crazy cheap. Some serious bang for the TT

More details on the problem here.
Pretty good analysis of the bug on AnandTech.

This is a serious issue....and it means that ALL existing Sandy Bridge products
currently on store shelves, or in consumers' systems are affected.

O-gad...talk about a PR nightmare, and the hassle involved to return/recall
all that silicon.

This is why I've stopped being an early adopter.  It's always prudent to give a new
product at least six months to 'mature' before jumping ship.

...and no one is immune from product issues.  Seems like some of us memory short.
Remember the Phenom TLB errata fiasco?  As far as I can remember, nothing was recalled.
A patch was issued as a 'workaround' which also caused a 14% drop in performance.

Still 'sneaky-lolzing'?

...and lets just say this problem meant that Intel whould stop selling CPUs/chipsets,
and AMD became the only desktop CPU/chipset manufacturer, would you be able to
stomach a 500 US cost for their lowest-end CPU?  Would you still be 'sneaky lolzing'?

Fanboys eh...  :shakehead:

Kudos to Intel for immediately addressing the problem.

I'm pretty sure all the motherboard OEMs will work out something to get replacements
to customers who have already 'crossed the Bridge', so to speak.

Fortunately, the release schedule of the Z68 chipset remains unaffected.  LGA-2011 FTW.  :happy0203:

Arc said it well. AMD decided to take the easier (cheaper) way out and just release a patch.

They said Intel probably looking at a 300mill hit on this one. Dont think AMD would have been able to recover from that kinna hit on their own. Intel can though.

The most important step to recovery is admitting there is a problem and make positive steps to resolve it. Just a matter of time till this is all sorted out.

lol @ already crossed the bridge.

Not happy about this news at all.

While Intel did the prudent thing, I'm wary of shady dealers who may still hawk defective wares.

Some may do so unwittingly as well.
