Gran Turismo 5 ~ The Official Thread
« on: November 22, 2010, 09:53:15 PM »

I think it's safe to say that most gamers locally have at some point in their life played a Gran Turismo game. Pretty much anyone with a PS2 modified or legit has played the awesome that is Gran Turismo 3 and its sequel.

On Wednesday (24th), Gran Turismo 5 will be hitting storeshelves after being revealed 4 years ago. The game has over 1000 cars some with fully modeled interiors, nascar, a track editor, car damage (a first for the series), 16 player multiplayer support, splitscreen, custom soundtracks, psp and pspgo integration, gran turismo TV (streaming car shows etc.), full career mode, car customisation, 3D support, Move Support etc..etc..etc..

When you think about the best racing games of all time, you think Mario Kart, Need For Speed, Burnout and Forza. There remains one series that is the prestige of the genre, it is without a doubt the definitive Gran Turismo.
Fellow GATTER's, race you soon in GT5!

I think every PS3 owner owes it to himself to get a copy of this game.
The only downside is that its an EXTREME life-sucker.  You tend not to be
too productive around the house once this baby gets going.

I'll get this one for the new year.  Right now its a toss-up between HAWX 2
and Apache: Air Assault.  :happy0203:

After watching some videos I cant remember the name of the last racer I have played.  Nothing else matters anymore... in terms of racers.  Was studying it when Black Ops came out but seriously contemplating it now, to sell some body parts or various liquids created inside my body, well whichever will fetch the higher price.

Cant wait for video from the NASCAR events(yes dammit I watch NASCAR) and the off road night driving races.

This is a list of my opinions that I sent to a friend. They are all my views so far and many may be incorrect and misleading. I just thought I'd still post it so people could get an idea. This was a result of just a few hours of playing around with GT5's features etc. so there are bound to be incorrect assumptions, poor spelling/grammar and stuff. My bro bought de game yesterday from a oldman in a Gulf store (downstairs somewhere) for $495.

Overview:

Good things

1. Graphics are great. Premium cars look perfect. Standard cars look great enough (people say they look like upscaled PS2 models, but I don't have a HDTV and I find that they look great). Plus, I follow Cranky Kong's Law of Graphics vs. Gameplay. But...the visuals are pretty, really pretty.
2. Damage is a nice touch for the GT series. To me, it looks awesome enough, though they are not realistic in relation to the force of the impact. In other words, it would take a lesser force to create the same damage for a real-life crash. I realised that this was spitefully done probably keep the driver in the race and to allow the GTAuto to fix it according to dents (I think). But it would be good if they fix that because it would force drivers to be more careful when racing.
3. AI has improved a bit. I saw them fighting to pass me as well as they even running off the road because of their speed. They do brake at some times if you are directly in their line, but it seems rare.
4. Weather looks great...looks real.
5. Licensing is boss as usual.
6. I dunno about loading, but I installed the entire 8GB of data and it loads only slightly longer than normal GT series (only very slightly longer).
7. The gift/item feature is the best feature so far. It is one of the best online features I've ever seen. Ingenious. When you get a gift/item you can choose to share it with a friend (I dunno if that means that you will not get to keep the item, but I think you can keep it. I think that it's like if you get a car, you can share it so that both you and your friends can have it.
8. Course Maker is cool enough. However, you are only allowed one slot for online sharing. That means that you can make many tracks but only upload one of them for others to play. What's good is that someone can send you a message and ask you upload another one of your tracks and you can go right ahead and remove the uploaded one and upload a new one. But that's silly, at least they should have allowed you to upload about 5.
9. The data logger visualisation feature is impressive.
10. Online seems to have some cool stuff.
11. Menus are awesome!!!! As expected.
12. Other features within the game are amazing.
13. Button mapping, customisation of almost anything is accepted greatly.
14. The leveling up system is a nice touch.
15. Everything feels realistic; unlocking paint colours, paying to paint your vehicle, fixing damage, fuel depletion...etc.
16. Karting is...well I haven't tried it yet. I eh play Nascar yet, I look forward to it.
17. I haven't played A-spec or B-spec yet. I did play arcade and it was cool to import the PSP garage (only allowed in arcade mode). B-spec sounds impressive. You can train a driver and level him up. You can pitch him online to race against others...amazing!
18. GTTV is really really cool.
19. I didn't try photo/travel yet (but everybody say it perfect so...it perfect).
20. insert other stuff here...

Disappointing Things

1. Damage looks to be more like plasticine than metal. It doesn't bother me, but it makes GT5 racers a bit shame when others insult the game because of it. I remember seeing the front-lights do a plastercine-like mould when it crashed. It is supposed to break/shatter. But again, it doesn't really matter...it looks kinda nice to see damage.
2. AI is the same a bit (maybe they're greatly improved in terms of overall driving and such). They still assume that you will not brake and so they don't brake until they hit you hard from behind.
3. Dirt and Snow tracks are limited. This disappoints me more than anything else since I mainly bought GT5 for rallying. I don't see the 'randomly generated rally courses' option/feature anywhere....anywhere! Nobody online speaks about it. It just don't exist. A promise that was left out? I raced Tahiti Maze on the PSP until I got an S-rank. That track is nowhere in GT5's official track-list. I do hope that those dirt tracks make it as a DLC. I'm willing to spend money on it because there simply is no muddy-track other than Tahiti Maze. Is mud hard to do?
4. Weather effects like rain and snow can only happen on a select few (very very few) tracks. That can probably mean one thing, the weather is not dynamic. It was specially hard-coded for a certain track. Trial Mountain must always be sunny according to the game...Rain doesn't need to make the rally course muddy!!! It's just a special effect, it need not affect my driving dammit. Put my rain everywhere and bring back my muddy tracks!
5. Penalties are not done right for poor driving. You can bounce off a wall and still come back strong on track at a good speed. This is a feature of the previous GT series that was kept. It should have been improved.
6. Course Maker is not as detailed as it could have been. This was known for some time. But it seems as though a lot of calculations are being done when adjusting the parameters. I think this was done for a reason??? Probably to match with the environment or complexity. I know, it's probably that they didn't make a complexity-measure (like the thermometer of LBP). Such a complexity measurement is probably difficult to do.
7. Online is a bit nice so far, but it seems as though it is missing some comfort-features. It's too complex to set up a race because your settings are not saved, you have to keep doing it. I still need to play online a bit, but I think that although it is complex in the menus, it lacks too much simple cosmetic features to make the finding/joining/creating of races/events much easier. Again, the online racing is unimportant to me, but it does have other cool features that I have to explore. I hope, as an update, that they add credits as rewards for good online racing. As it stands, there is no reason to race online other than to see if you can pass the other guy(s).
8. Lack of full customisation for the 800 standard cars. You cannot change rims, rim colour. You can paint your car though.

That's it for now. Remember, everything above is crazy opinions and assumptions....doh go insulting meh now.

Seiryuki i fully agree with you. hav som points of my own.

+ i like the incorporation of "Top Gear" tho thats real cool....

- The constant zooming is annoying tho...

+- Online play is like street racing in Trinidad....free for all...who car faster than who....still need some work tho like setting restrictions and stuff but it tight....i thought there were suppose to be a ladder?

+ Anyone took in the music and ambiance? it is the coolest i ever experienced in a game.

jus my 2 cents for now...

@suzieboy
If you mean the R1 to zoom in on menus...I would not be able to play GT5 without it. I don't have money to buy a HDTV and so that feature is a GT-Life-saver for me.

I love the music, but I dunno if it would make sense to say that 189 tracks feels like too much. With so many tracks, I never even bothered setting up a custom playlist yet.

And about the damage, I'm not sure if the GTAuto fixes that or if it autofixes.
I played NASCAR and it's pretty hard (for now maybe). Those stock cars are so heavy and fast...plus you have to draft while keeping steady.

At its core...GT was never about rallying.  A few rally-style events were added as an afterthought in the earlier games.

You want rallying?  Well that's what the Colin McRae/DiRT series is for.

Personally, I'm glad the hardcore rally events aren't that plentiful in this game.
Leave that for Codemasters.  They always seem to implement rally-driving physics
better than most.

Thanks, I'm gonna pay a little more attention to the DiRT series. I'll check it out.
But it was only recently (GTPSP) that I got fond of rallying (I hated it since GT2) and the Tahiti Maze became my favourite. I find it disappointing that they left it out.

Here is some damage:

And here are my videos that I recorded today (only shows my tracks):

Of all the games i've EVER loved on a PS, THIS is definitively IT. I've played all, with 1 and 2 getting the most love (because well I didn't know a PS or PS2, I made a borrow). Even so, this titles has brought me more joy than any other racer i've ever played. Just the right balance of simulator and arcade (for my liking). I don't own a PS3 and prolly never will, but I WILL go over by my cousin (or invite them over for that matter) to get my hands on the goodness that is GT5... *W1nTry drools over keyboard*... Forza is coming, but GT will always hold a special place in my hands XD
