Never bothered with Amazon app store.

The Amazon app store offers incredible deals on apps.

They give away one free app daily. Can't argue with free.

Some apps are also heavily discounted on a regular. For example, Bejeweled 2 goes for $0.99 on the Amazon store but $2.86 on the Google PlayStore.

@ Awesome, totally agreed. Stopped mine in disgust as well.

Was a great service so if they ever make the full feature set available to Trinidad, I'll be back on board.

So how do you access it if it region blocked? Never bothered since it seemed like a hassle. I only buy apps from play store when there is a sale.

Man, my first week with my new S3 has been incredible. It's amazing to see how far we've reached in terms of technology. Seeing titles like Vice City, Bard's Tale and Modern Combat 4 running on a cellphone amazes me every time.

I may have gone a bit app crazy though. I did a memory swap mod with my 64GB sdcard and downloaded close to 600 apps/games (you read right). Now the App Draw takes a good while to load after exiting from a particularly intensive game. One main issue I'm having is the battery life. It sucks arse!!! Will definitely be buying one of those 4400mAh extended batteries come January. Doh care how fat it makes the phone  :laughing7:.

As for the region blocking issues, just get those titles the way I did.  I shall not say more. (troll)

Hahahaha... Oh Rage...

A custom firmware/kernel will fix that battery issue somewhat, but you'll have to root it.

Currently, the best custom ROM for the S3 is Omega v34, which features JB v4.1.2, combined with the latest Siyah kernel.
That ROM/kernel combo would regularly get me around 15-17 hrs daily heavy use.

When you ready to see just how deep that rabbit hole goes...check me.  :happy0203:

600APPS????

Rage, you sir are INSANE

I'm feeling sorry for that poor phone.

I've been very selective at first with which apps I installed on my Galaxy Nexus. Two reasons.

1) I don't want the phone running sluggishly due to many apps hogging the memory.

2) I don't want any shady apps gaining access to my personal data.

With 600 apps, you've rolled the dice so many times, aren't you worried about an unscrupulous app making off with your data?

I'm actually already rooted running the Siyah kernel with Omega v35. One of the first things I did when I got the phone. I doh stick lol. But I can still use some pointers to reduced battery consumption. I already know about turning off WiFi and all the basics.

not really. the first thing i installed on the phone was virus protection. and i only download apps that have very positive ratings. plus, i don't intend to keep them all. i'd usually test them out, and if i don't need it i remove. besides the whole app draw issue, the phone runs as fast as it did on day one. very few of them run in startup.

Man, with 100 apps, I would think a bad one could slip through the crack.

You're talking 600!!!!

Outrageous. Even with protection.

Hell, I've never had that many apps on my full fledged PC, EVER. Let alone my phone. lol

Possibly, but i'm not too worried. The only apps that were detected as being potentially dangerous were King Pirate I and II, which are free on the app store. Removed them one time.

PS. Keep in mind that themes and icon packs count at apps, so it's not to say it close to 600 individual apps per say.

The irony of this made me HOWL with laughter.  :laughing7:
Surely you jest.

Hmmm..... Omega and Siyah supposed to be THE hand-in-glove combo to better battery life on the S3.
Try running the battery down to zero and recharging it to full (with the phone off) at least three times, and see if the battery efficiency improves.
I always do that whenever I change ROM/kernel.

Changing the brightness of my screen had the most impact on battery life.

Either way, I'm not willing to increase the bulk on my phone in exchange for a few more hours of use.

I'll wait for a step change in battery technology that could deliver a full day or two in respectable form factor.

Till then, this little baby is always in the car. For some emergency juice.

Works like a boss.

Arc gave the 411 a couple hundred posts back.

Charges every device we own (Ipad, kindle, blackberry, galaxy nexus), fits in your pocket and doubles as a wicked flash light that lasts forever.

lmao! irony 4 real.

I'll give ur suggestion a go. Thx

@Wyatt. i not really too keen on making the phone any thicker, but if i can get almost triple the battery life by doing so, i don't mind.

This advice from the article remains true

a word to the wise

Quote
The best way to stay safe on Android is to just stick to established apps from the official Android Market or the Amazon Appstore. While bad apps do occasionally show up in the Market, Google removes them swiftly and can remotely kill the apps on phones.

Most of the truly dangerous threats have been detected on forums and third-party websites masquerading as well-known apps. Basically, don’t install a version of “Cut the Rope” obtained from a Chinese pirated software forum. By leaving the Unknown Sources option disabled in the Android settings, apps cannot even be sideloaded from other sources, which blocks this vector completely.

So for your sake, I hope those apps came from the google store or amazon

It is still relevant. One of the reasons why I stopped using shady apks, pretty much only buy apps that I want. Don't really need an antivirus personally, but yeah if side loading stuff sounds like it is better than nothing.

http://www.howtogeek.com/129896/htg-explains-does-your-android-phone-need-an-antivirus/

"Prior to Android 4.2, the majority of Android’s anti-malware features weren’t actually found on Android devices themselves – the protection was found in Google Play. This means that users who download apps from outside the Google Play store and sideload them are more at risk."

"If you only install apps from Google Play, you shouldn’t need an antivirus. However, if you regularly sideload apps from outside Google Play, you should probably install an antivirus app just to be safe. Of course, it’s generally best not to sideload suspicious apps in the first place. There are exceptions, such as installing apps from the Amazon Appstore, downloading games you’ve purchased from the Humble Indie Bundle, or installing the Swype keyboard from Swype’s website, but you probably shouldn’t downloaded pirated games from suspicious websites – of course, that’s just common sense."
