Man, Exar hit the nail on the head really. All they really did was take their existing TDMA towers from years back, did the necessary upgrades to convert them to CDMA and are now using those to push WiMax. No REAL work was done since the establishment of GSM how many years ago.

Fine so you have a lot of work to do to implement 4g directly to end user devices (mind you they cant even get 2.5g right after all these years)

So what do you do? Limit this palatable price to three phones for which you have to buy and sign a contract for and bussing price on the rest who already have proper devices and want some decent mobile speed.

Basically, in selling their soul to samsung (yes, I confirmed that they have a deal with samsung, why u think u ONLY seeing Samsung android devices being offered in this promotion), they are missing out on who knows how many customers for their service.

EPIC win TSTT.

but I see what arc saying.....these prices ain't bad.

I pay about that a month right now for the misses phone and thats with just shiddy edge.

Might as well trade up and get some serious speed.

Only thing is, she probably won't use / appreciate an Android.

If ever I have to get my own phone (as opposed to corporate issue), this is the plan I'd go with though.

I'd be wary of getting locked into a 2 year contract with this.
If someone comes along with legit 3G you'll be looking quite the fool walking around with this.

I'm not really at liberty to go too much into detail, but believe me when I say that won't be happening this time.

Well that's downright cryptic there Exar. Is it that someone locally is close to deploying true mobile broadband directly to phones/tablets?

Pretty much.
Yeah I know I'm holding back details but I can't chance breaking my nondisclosure agreements by saying or implying too much.

Well, you heard it here first folks. Let's see how soon things start happening. I wait with baited breath.

Really hope its not evdo based tech they bringing though. Hopefully something of the HSDPA flavour.

Sorry if I'm just a little bit skittish about posting this stuff online.
Anyway, it won't be a new provider. Current providers have it in the works. New providers would take quite a while to get a network up and running, not just due to the regulatory requirements (which would also announce their arrival) but moreso from having to deploy the network. It's difficult now even for bmobile and Digicel to find a few new cell sites, for a new player to build scores is a different story.

Anyway, I don't know anything about a south american mobile company. Claro was in Jamaica, and that's America Movil which is Mexican. The rumours I've heard don't point to our potential third provider being south american, course those may just be one of many rumours.

As for the technology, Digicel uses Ericsson almost exclusively and have launched HSPA+ in Bermuda so if you assume a pattern for Digicel anyway it's not that big a mystery.

I won't say who'll be first to market but you can be sure that both sides have a fair idea what the other is doing and so even if one gets there first, the other won't lag that far behind, even from scratch you could rush a whole 3G overlay out in 6months or so.

I did get a PM asking about 4G. While HSPA+ does give "4G speeds" I doubt very much that anyone will be seeing LTE (which is true 4G) for at least a few years. Current 3G tech means that LTE can be swapped in with nothing but a software upgrade but I wouldn't hold my breath for it happening too soon.

Thanks for the insight there Exar.

Oone thing is for sure though. Whatever comes out whenever, im willing to put my head on a block to say that the service is going to be out of reach (financially and to a lesser extent technically) out of reach of a great many people. So it may very well come out and i'll just have to sit and watch it go by because its too bloody expensive.

In other news...MSI is releasing its popular Afterburner video card overclocking and monitoring app to Android phones!!!. This will be VERY useful for me to monitor my MSI video cards while gaming. No more intrusive overlay for me :)

I like the idea of tablets, especially this one looks very tempting but I can't justify one in my day to day activities. I simply have no use for one beyond the novelty of having a 'roving workstation' through rdp. In a week i'll just pack it up there, never to be used (seriously) again.
