very interesting

so we grant an app made by a company called BigTinCan "SuperUser" access to your rooted android to block ads that support the "free" apps.

Am I paranoid, or does that not sound like a good idea??

Also, will that adfree revoke the permissions granted to the free apps on install? Or is it just blocking the apps but leaving the generous permissions in tact?

On a lighter note, Woody and Arc, can you confirm the following article?

AdFree does just that, block ads.  It doesn't interfere the other app permissions.

Read the user reviews.  They tell the story a lot better than I can.

...and as for the article, I wouldn't know.  I almost married. :laughing7:

lol, arc plead the 5th on that article response yes. smart smart

Yeah @ mez, even though these phones are "bigger", because of their low profile they actually fit better in a pants pocket than my blackberry which is thicker and looks like a pack of cards. Especially with a case on.

Just went through a "100 best apps" list for the droid and really only came away with one that was  must have.

Kindle

It even remembered exactly where I was in the book from on my actual kindle device.

sweet.

Now I will never be bored waiting in a line ever again, lol.

Hopefully the battery can handle the screen being on for some lengthy reading sessions.

So decided to try out the media capabilities of the Galaxy Nexus.

Threw on a few episodes of Archer and a movie.

Was disappointed that none of them would play with the stock media player.

Had to bite the bullet and install MPlayer (which required permission to my offshore bank accounts, lines of credit, router, GATT admin credentials as well as debit card PIN)

Worked like a charm.

I feel fully exposed with all the access granted but the app is a boss.

Played all the media files flawlessly. Slick interface too, using swipe actions to fast forward and rewind.

Never thought I'd sit down and watch an entire movie on a 4.6" screen but it wasn't horrible. A good way to kill some time if you're stuck waiting somewhere.

So Google 5.0 cometh.

Jelly bean by end of the year with hand sets being sold direct by google as they are currently doing with the Galaxy Nexus.

good times, good times.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/15/google-planning-multiple-nexus-devices-android-jelly-bean/?fb_ref=article&fb_source=home_oneline

Unlocked phones iwmc for cheap.

Can't beat that

I'd happily upgrade to a Nexus 2.0 myself. Though I'm not complaining with their current offering, still good to know that the future will be bright.

Wow...

+1 for that, sir.  I didn't even know all those launchers existed.

I used ADW almost exclusively, until I discovered GO Launcher EX.
Let's just say I cannot will not use any other launcher.

That should be a commandment: "Thou shalt not useth any other launcher but GO launcher EX (on thy Android device)"  :laughing7:

Not sure if this was posted but, this actually belongs in multiple threads:

$74USD Android PC the size of a thumb drive[url]

New $74 Android mini computer is slightly larger than a thumb drive

The AllWinner A10 Android 4.0 mini PC
CNX Software

Chinese retailers have started selling a miniature Linux computer that is housed in a 3.5-inch plastic case slightly larger than a USB thumb drive. Individual units are available online for $74.

The small computer has an AllWinner A10 single-core 1.5GHz ARM CPU, a Mali 400 GPU, and 512MB of RAM. An HDMI port on the exterior allows users to plug the computer into a television. It outputs at 1080p and is said to be capable of playing high-definition video.

The device also has a full-sized USB port with host support for input devices, a conventional micro-USB port, a microSD slot, and an internal 802.11 b/g WiFi antenna. The computer can boot from a microSD card and is capable of running Android 4.0 and other ARM-compatible Linux platforms.

Earlier this year, we reported on the FXI Cotton Candy, a thumb drive computer that can plug directly into the HDMI port on a television. The system, which became available for preorder in February, sells for $199.

The $74 AllWinner system seems like an intriguing, low-cost alternative to the Cotton Candy. Both computers have the same GPU, but the Cotton Candy has a faster dual-core processor and twice as much RAM. Another key difference is that the Cotton Candy has an actual HDMI male plug built in (whereas the AllWinner computer has a socket) and consequently doesn’t require the use of an HDMI cable.

Much like the recently launched $35 Raspberry Pi, these relatively small and inexpensive Linux systems offer enthusiasts a compelling platform for embedded computing projects.

amazing list of launchers there

+1

I am thoroughly baffled after reading through the selections.

Luckily, they seem to endorse the stock ICS launcher (which I currently use) otherwise would have felt like a dolt for not running one of the top rated options they reviewed.

Do miss landscape mode on ICS. Seems counter intuitive to turn the phone side ways and not have the home screen follow suit. Most of the apps do, so why not the home screen. nice find

May give another launcher a shot for that reason alone. (Once it doesn't ask for the kitchen sink in permissions, which I suspect it will, lol)

+1

Beautiful device in the mini droid pc W1n.

+1 as well.

Can't wait for these things to be viable HTPC alternatives.

They aren't for sale on amazon nor ebay yet but by christmas this year, we should be able to pick one up. (which I will most definitely do)

ADW and GO Launcher have landscape mode support for the homescreens.

Give either one of those a try, and you may not want to go back to the stock launcher ever again.

Not the ones I suggested, I don't know about the others though.

I have installed custom ROMs that used Apex and Nova launchers as their default,
but those never asked for SuperUser (aka 'root') permissions either.

yeah, that price is pretty decent all things considered.

I'm impressed that a local carrier has it. Our android options had been a little sparse on the high end last I checked between the green and red.
