seems like a dead link woody.

Its only been 24 hours, so I'm not willing to throw in the towel on the keyboard just yet.

Will give it a week or two to see if it grows on me.

After a few minutes, was prompted to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.2. An 8mb download. Clicked OK and a few minutes later was greeted with the updated OS and another prompt to upgrade to 4.0.4 This time, a meatier 32mb download.

Wyatt.... it comes with ICS...... it was just an update  lol (troll)

lol, steups

Why you so?

That's the reason I chose the galaxy nexus, because none of the sliders were getting ics anytime soon and the droid 4 dropped support for our bands.

This one came out of the box with either ICS 4.0.1 or 4.0.0 (didn't get a chance to check)

Then updated OTA to ICS 4.0.2 then again to ICS 4.0.4

Clearer?

Thoughts on these Micro USB to HDMI® MHL Adapter cables.

Which one do you guys recommend?

lol @ can it run quake.

sweet @ cheap hmdi out immc

Can't wait to see what ICS looks like on the big screen.

May even consider using it as a make shift HTPC in a pinch (like say on a trip to tobago, without need for toting a laptop)

Had a run in with the Google Play Store today. Looking for a simple HIIT timer, yet all of the freebie ones I tried required internet access and more.

Why would a simple app need that? Not feeling comfortable granting those permissions.

Whats the deal here? Is this normal?

*edit*
So apparently I am not the only one spooked by this:

Woody, those links increased my worries as opposed to easing them.

A quote from the last one in particular

Quote
To preserve your privacy and security, you shouldn’t install apps that require a lot of permissions with no obvious purpose

Seems a lot of these free apps are asking for invasive permissions and internet access to run ads.

steups. That's the down side of being on a platform that is so "net savvy" I suppose.

Every app and its uncle is "ad supported".

They want to track you, they want to stream new ads over your internet connection...and with that you open the can of worms to the malware/adware scourge of an ecosytem that already exists on the PC.

Not feeling very comfortable at all.

Might need a bloody firewall and avgfree installed on this nexus yes.

Somehow, this has never been an issue for me, but then, I reflash my phone every few weeks,
so apps that gather info have a terrible time doing so on my phone.  :laughing7:

Once you not storing nuclear arming codes on your phone, I don't think it's that big of a deal.

Haven't had security issues over the past 2 years YMMV

Do You Really Need An Antivirus/Security App On Your Android Device?

http://www.redmondpie.com/do-you-really-need-an-antivirussecurity-app-on-your-android-device/

"Android does have more malware issues than any other smartphone operating system. iOS and Windows Phone 7 generally have no security issues because of the fact that they are a. closed systems b. quick to push updates to users when security issues are discovered. Android, on the other hand, is a. an open system b. is very slow to send updates to users."

way, yuh not helping boy woody, not helping at all, lol

Quote
If you’re downloading a live wallpaper app and it requires permissions for location via GPS, then you should stay away from it.

That's my issue right there. Why would simple apps require a ton of permissions? It sets off an alarm in my head.

You could imagine if someone who isn't tech savvy is using a droid and just "accepting" away all the apps with these preposterous access requirements?

To put the onus on the end user instead of the system is a recipe of disaster.

steups. Now self I'm gonna be extremely prejudiced with which apps I download from the Google Play Store.

And would definitely stick with recommending BB/IOS devices for the misses/less technically inclined.

On a more positive note, just setup "Face Unlock" today. very slick!

PS....woody, as for not having a security issue...would you know if you did?

Many XP machines that were part of a thriving bot net remained clueless for months if not years.

I guess I am like Arc, flashing different ROMS every so often. Many of those permissions are for the ad networks used to push ads to the device. I'd recommend rooting and using an app like Adfree to banish those ads....

The security issue is an important one, but a little overblown.
