Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on the active for some time. Since my original nexus died due to water submersion. (RIP)

Not pleased about the drop in camera res and definitely not pleased by the 1 meter water resistance for 30 mins.

It isn't really "rugged" at all. You will still need a case to "protect" this phone from any serious activity.

In reality, it is more equivalent to a "water resistant 6 ft" rating you'd see on a cheap casio watch.

Still, it is a step in the right direction and it will survive a brisk splash in Maracas, unlike the aforementioned deceased Nexus.

Santa Claus, I hope you're paying attention!

wyatt, u seriously bone yUh nexus at a beach ? lol. shame!

btw, I buy ah waterproof case for my wife nokia 920. we does be diving 30 feet with that thing. Samsung phone itself should be able to withstand ah lil 15 feet of pressure without mashing up. So just a thought, could check out some cheap water proof cases if u like wyatt.

And yes, I agree waterproofing is a step in the right direction.

Yeah, my current daily driver is a Galaxy Note 2. As you know, that thing is huge, so unless the water proof case is ridiculously small, that's a no go for me. lol

Don't want to add anymore bulk.

I think the active will be the sweet spot between bulk and water proofing.

If I was in the states and could get one on a plan for US$200....SOLD!

As is, being in Trinidad, I'll have to wait on Santa Claus.

I pray to the smartphone deities that Samsung graces us with a Galaxy Note 3 Active, although it's probably unlikely because of the S-Pen compartment.

Now THAT phone I would move heaven, earth AND hell to get.  :laughing7:

Agreed @ Note 3 Active.

Yeah woody, the price hot.

US$49.99 would be more appropriate.

In time we should see the tech become more affordable.

Would love to see where it goes. Maybe even toy robots and transformers controlled by your Android.

SOLD!

Jah, just now we go all be forced to use android. IOS7 / IP5s not going to help d situation. Have to wait to see what IOS8/IP6 and Nokia/WP8.1 can do….

Quote
What Smartphone Duopoly? Apple as much at risk as Blackberry and Windows Phone

Over the last year I have increasingly been hearing about the smartphone duopoly of iPhone and Android, and how the two together meant there was no space or hope in the market for anyone else, either new entrants or established players.

While there is no doubt Android is increasingly dominant, one element I found incredibly irritating was how Apple’s iOS was given a pass – as part if by being part of the Duopoly it was thought to be safe, while the rest of the market would soon declare bankruptcy and leave the field.

This of course ignores the fact the Apple and Google are about as far away from being allies as any two companies (except possibly Google and Microsoft), meaning as much as Google would love to see Windows Phone dead, they would not mind raising the iPhone’s tombstone either.

A look at the supposed duopoly above, stretching all the way back to 2009, should make it clear that in no way has a stalemate been called between Apple and Google, and that Apple has rapidly lost any market share advantage they held vs Android, and that their position has reversed nearly perfectly – when Android was introduced it had 20% of the combined volume, and in Q1 2013 Apple only had 20% of the combined volume.

This market share erosion shows no sign of abating, and it far from inconceivable that iOS will hit 10% of the combined “Duopoly” volume in the next year. It hit 16% in Q3 2012 for example.

Apple then faces the same issues as any minority player, such as Windows Phone or Blackberry – if you only have 4% market share like in Spain, vs 92% for Android, no sane developer with a locally relevant app (such as a banking app) would develop for you first.

In May 2013 Kantar has iOS having 15% market share in Germany, 17.9% in France, 14.8% in Italy, 9.9% in Mexico and overall just 17.8% in EU5 overall (and probably much less in Europe in total), down from 19.2% the previous year.

Yes, iOS is strong in USA, but its pretty weak everywhere else.  Its time to stop talking about the Duopoly and call it for what it is  – the Android Monopoly and the other minority players, including Apple’s iPhone.

Of course this does not mean I endorse an uninformed view such as Salvatore Mattera’s, that The Mobile OS War is Over, and certainly from the above it is clear I would not include Apple in the winner’s circle, but what history has shown is that App lock-in did not stop Android from completely demolishing iOS, and it will not stop the next “winner” from taking over from Android.  It will also not kill small players, else Mac OS would have died years ago.

The clear truth is that nothing is forever, the smartphone market has always been very dynamic (as previous leaders such as Palm, Blackberry, Symbian, Windows Mobile and now iOS found out) and in 5 years time we will probably have some-one else sitting pretty and thinking they will rein for the next 1000 years.

strange, I never heard the term duopoly used before in reference to Apple and Android in terms of the mobile market.

On the under hand, I have often heard the terms dominance and meteoric rise.

I don't know what that author has been reading online nuh. Apple was always in the line of fire from Android. From day one.

Windows Phone, Nokia and BlackBerry were never a threat to begin with.

Also, while Apple boasts a very impressive App ecosystem (still higher in quality than Android's as of this writing....note quality, not quantity) the Mac advantage has always been in their first party offerings. The tightly integrated native apps that you get out of the box.

They have that advantage on pretty much every device they bring to the market.

I don't expect them to "Defeat" android but they will remain relevant to Apple loyalists (and profitable) regardless of Google's dominance.

10% of a billion device mobile market is still helluva lot of money (and customers)

Wyatt, at one time Nokia was d number 1 phone maker in d world.....

Also, high quality apps are starting to come out for android first now. All the home automation apps are coming out for android first and apple months later.

And the author did say apple go continue to live on just like wp is continuing, is apple. And u say 10% is alot, so wp 5% is alot too? I don't think so. And going from 80% to 10% is a big deal. And they going to continue to drop unless they do something about it.

O btw, the general consumer don't care bout tightly integrated 1st party offerings, if so, wp Would have been soring.

Anyhow u look at it, there is no denying, android is simply cutting everybody ass.

And the threat is not wp, d treat is Microsoft, and Google will do anything to prevent MS from getting a foothold in that market again.

Everybody has/had their time in the sun.

Nokia had theirs, Apple had theirs, and now Android/Samsung is having theirs.
As long as Google and Samsung continue to push the envelope, they might stay there for a good few years again.

correct and that person who rose to take the throne right now is Android.

Nokia WAS the number one....emphasis on the word "was".

They are currently irrelevant

More importantly, Symbian is no longer relevant because quite frankly, unlike apple, which once again demonstrates tight integration between OS and Hardware in their Iphone line, the real winner in this era is the operating system. Not the hand set.

This is Mac vs PC all over again. Mobile style.

Apple with small market share and a tightly controlled hardware/software platform.

Google with an operating system that can run on any old hardware and despite the fragmentation such a strategy brings, seeing run away success in the adoption of Android.

As we saw in the PC hay days. 100 pundits pushing your platform generally beats one. lol

Android to the world.

Windows Phone is no threat at all to Android. Windows Phone should have been Android. They were too late to the ball and cannot catch this runaway freight train.

The general consumer doesn't care about tight 1st party integration but the typical Apple customer is NOT the "general consumer".

Apple has their market and they are loyal. They know who they are targeting and it is a brilliant strategy.

Fact is, those people spend more on apps (and music via itunes purchases, etc....) than the typical Android customer. So don't cry for Apple. They are safe.

And yes, 10% is a lot

The market is HUGE and growing.

For us statistic lovers, here is a beautiful article that demonstrates the points made.

Lots of graphs.

lol, dude, before android, Apple's mobile consumers WERE the general consumer. They lost them, to android.

And I sure Nokia thought  they was safe, and MS thought they was safe too.

And apple market share currently still falling, when it reach down to 5% man go still be saying they safe lol. Just like MS with their 5% Ent?

I d'oh care how safe nobody say apple is, going from 80% market share to 10 is horribly BAD! Lihhiicckksss.

Exactly Arc! Android is freeness central.

Which makes complete sense because it is based on an opensource platform. Driven by Techies.

Again, very similar to the PC vs Mac era. The PC was notoriously known for its "freeloader" user mentality. Something I've waxed poetic about on this forum for many years. The typical PC enthusiast was also synonymous with piracy. They'd invest in the hardware for their rig but software was fare game. Everything from the OS to apps to games.

Not so with Mac users. Apple would nickel and dime their users for Operating System updates and they merrily paid.

PC users would pirate their way straight from Windows 95 through Windows 7. lol

@ Messiaah. I not sure what's wrong with your maths bro.

An Iphone? The device of the general consumer with that MSRP?? You have to be kidding.

Did you read the article? Or look at the graphs even???

Apple is sitting very pretty and making more money out of their market share than Android.

If the market keeps expanding rapidly thanks to cheap android hand sets, Apple will "appear" to be losing market share. Nothing wrong with that.

So long as they keep pushing out new Iphones and getting their loyal users to spend like crazy. They could have 1% market share of a billion "mobile devices" pie and still be insanely profitable.

Notice, the other "irrelevant" players in the game like Windows Phone 7 haven't been so lucky in squeezing money out of their customers.

Don't cry for Apple. They very safe.
