Cheap Intel socket 775 motherboard wanted...
« on: October 26, 2010, 07:47:47 AM »
Yeah...the cheap-ass Biostar mobo in my download PC suddenly gave up the ghost
last night, gives me funny characters on screen just after the initial boot-screen.... :(

So, later for that.  I guess you really get what you pay for.

Does anyone have a cheap, used Intel mobo to get rid of?
Must support a Core 2 Duo E6550.

(...and by 'cheap' I mean $300 or less).

Who say it?

are you sure its ur mobo? From the symptoms you described, it looks like a gpu issue? try removing the gpu and use the onboard graphics chip to see if you still getting the lines. If it was your board that died, you would'nt even reach the boot screen.
Why don't you kiss my dual-sticks?

When Arc spoke to me about it earlier this morning he wasn't' referring to his main gaming system. This is a secondary PC used for downloading, etc. Most likely he was using onboard video.

The correct description should be the board is "faulty". I'm certain he went thru all the necessary troubleshooting steps before making this thread.
God is dead.

Its a cheap Biostar board, using on-board video, and I get the funny characters with no drives connected.  Upgraded the BIOS...same thing, so yeah...later for that.

Ended up getting the MSI G31TM-P21 yesterday for 369.

Its amazing that in 2010, we still have to contend with shitty BIOSes.

Come ON Biostar...better dan dat.  :(

Define sh1tty? I working on a million HP Desktops that have an 'onboard' VGA output but they come with ATI 2400XT cards and NO WAY to use the onboard via the bios. So again I ask, define sh1tty.

Does it work?
Does it allow you to install an OS and browse the net?
Does it work with all your normal parts?

If the answer to all the above answers is YES, then how is it sh1tty.

Perspective is a helluva thing.

LOL...well, I cannot argue with that, but the board that crapped out wasn't even a year yet,
and I've sold/traded mobos older than that, that were STILL WORKING!!!

I could understand if it crapped out because I maltreated it, but jus so?

Steups.

Components fail, its a part of life, admittedly, a sucky part.

Ive had Biostar mb's that lasted many years throughout several builds.

Case in point, I once sold a new socket a machine to a customer who brought it back after 3 years, not because it was bad, just that they wanted to upgrade.

I then went on to use that same board as my media server for about 1.5 years then after I took that same board and made up a cheap system and sold it last year. The person I sold it to again brought it backk to install new antivirus  couple months back and it STILL woking.

Its luck of the draw. I certainly wont say Biostar is $hit. You were just unlucky to get one that failed quickly.
