I recently installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix (10.04) on my MSI Wind...and then Chinarakinda turned me on to an even easier
to use flavour called Jolicloud. The idea here is that most of your apps are cloud-centric, so having an online connection
is pretty much a requirement to make the most out of this OS...
Basically its the same as the version I installed...but what's different here is that there are lots of
things that are already pre-installed, which I had to install from the command line in 10.04, so that
its easier to get up and running after installation. Once you've created your acconut and connected to the
web, the automatic updates will start.
Like UNR 10.04, all devices are supported, even the webcam and bluetooth adapter, so I had no trouble setting
up and using Sykpe, and my Logitech bluetooth mouse. Codecs for audio and video are also preinstalled for
the more common formats, so I can play all my -ahem- 'jockumentaries'
without incident.
...oh, and MS Office 2003 is supported via the 'Wine' Windows environment emulator, so no issues there with Office files.
For the Facebook junkies...you've got an 'app' preinstalled for that too. If you setup to login to the OS using your FB credentials,
it will automatically pull all your info when you connect to the net. This is not a requirement however...non-FB users can still create
an account.
With respect to apps...the 'cloud' app-manager in the 2nd pic is where you get all the apps in the Jolicloud repository,
and it keeps track of what you have installed once you're online. You can also check there for OS updates as well.
...and did I mention that its totally free?
Check out the Jolicloud site if you're interested. You can get a torrent for the
iso, and the USB installer that you can use to create a bootable USB to install from.
As a netbook OS...I can fully recommend this. Its nice and light...easy to use, and if you have a problem, just Google it.
