No more backyard server hosting. I guess it helps cut down cheating a bit. Still. I would have felt more comfortable if Punkbuster handled anti cheat though. Them hackers be skipping in BC2 dred.

steuuupppsss @ that 'must have internet access' foolishness.

That has a ubisoft-ness to it that I do not like.

So far thats the only blemish on an otherwise solid game.  So what happens if your LAN suddenly loses internet access?  Does the game just suddenly stop too?

Not cool Treyarch.  Definitely not cool.

Gary Oldman And Ed Harris In Call Of Duty: Black Ops

Hollywood stars Gary Oldman and Ed Harris are lending their vocal talents to the upcoming Call of Duty, publisher Activision has revealed.

Oldman will be reprising his role as Viktor Reznov from Call of Duty: World at War. Oldman's film credits include Sid & Nancy, The Professional and The Dark Knight, among many more like Bram Stoker's Dracula and The Fifth Element.

Joining him will be Ed Harris, who will be voicing CIA operative Jason Hudson, one of the game's lead protagonists. Harris has appeared in films like The Right Stuff, The Abyss and Apollo 13. He also starred in George Romero's Knightriders, a movie about jousting on motorcycles.

Scribe David S. Goyer — who has screenplay credits on Blade, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight — is signed on to do script consultation and aid in story development. Goyer penned the upcoming Superman flick, The Man of Steel, and is working on the third Batman film from Christopher Nolan.

"Oldman, Harris and Goyer are considered some of Hollywood's finest talents and they perfectly complement Call of Duty: Black Ops' ambitious and immersive single player experience," Studio Head of Treyarch Mark Lamia said in an official release. "Their contributions have helped us to push the boundaries of our story telling and character development far beyond anything we have ever attempted before in the franchise."

Less Gore in Multiplayer

Some of you might have noticed already, but there will be (way?) less gore in multiplayer than in the singleplayer campaign.

After getting hands-on at the Multiplayer Reveal Event, HipHopGamer » talked with @DavidVonderhaar » in another booming interview. They mainly talked about ideas HipHopGamer wished were implemented, and what reasons Treyarch had to not feature them in Call of Duty: Black Ops. In the video interview below you can check them all out, as some of them would actually be pretty sweet to see in a future titles.

One of the subjects they touched however, was the gore engine in Black Ops. In various singleplayer campaign trailers, we see body parts fly off like crazy. Heads explode, arms fly off... It really touches the grim and gruesome story of being behind enemy lines in the Cold War, just like we've seen before in Call of Duty: World at War. When comparing this gameplay to the multiplayer mode, many will be very disappointed by the fact that it's really toned down. By the looks of it, we won't be blowing off limbs from your baby brother in the other room but only repainting the walls with his blood. If you re-watch the MP Reveal Trailer » and skip to the very end, you'll see a good close-up in the Theater Mode of what the gore actually will be like (image to the right). David 'Vahn' Vonderhaar explains:

Quote
Ultimately, if you're making a choice between gore and a higher degree customization, we chose the latter. One of them impacts gameplay and those things have always been really important to us, and maybe more important so. You've got to find that balance, it's a world wide title that ships on four platforms [X360, PS3, PC and Wii]  and you got all those places you've got to deal with those things. So it's really important on a design front and a business front to make sure you'll do the right amount of that. Not so much that you'll get in trouble, but enough to push the boundaries as hard and fast as you can.

So basically what he says is that it has come up but made a well thought out plan to tackle two problems, one being a richer gameplay experience and the other one boring business and legal stuff... Remember the mission "No Russian" from Modern Warfare 2 where you had the possibility to shoot innocent civilians for no reason? Infinity Ward and Activision had so much trouble getting it through ratings, and they were eventually forced to remove that level completely from the German version of the game. Why they can do gore in the singleplayer campaign and not in multiplayer is beyond us, but apparently this is one of the reasons and we just have to take their word for it.

To quickly touch on other ideas, that were not implemented in Black Ops, what would you guys think about an option to create your own maps and environments to play in with your friends? Obviously PC gamers have been able to do this with mod tools in various Call of Duty games, but wouldn't it be a sweet deal to do this on consoles also? Vahn and the team at Treyarch have actually talked about this in the past, but chose not to implement it as it would be really really difficult to create and they only want to do something if they know they can do it right. So who knows... Great idea for future projects, maybe?

After seeing all the multiplayer gameplay, and having a rough idea of what features are included in the Black Ops multiplayer mode, what feature request would you send to Treyarch for future Call of Duty games?

Hardest CoD To Balance

Treyarch believe that Call of Duty: Black Ops' Multiplayer was the most difficult game within the franchise to balance.

When speaking to CVG », Treyarch's Community Manager Josh Olin said that it was a harder task to balance the game in comparison with previous Call of Duty titles.

With the introduction of CoD Points and rare but devastating super weapons (from Care Packages), he notes that it's been a "much more difficult game to balance" but reassures us that the studio has "stepped up to the plate".

He mentions that there's a lot of stuff that contributes to the balancing worries which includes CoD Points and that "XP is always a tough thing to balance out". Josh goes on to talk about how the introduction of currency means that they not only have to balance the weapons and perks but also the cost of them.

With previous games, Treyarch were working on multiple projects at a time, but now the whole studio is focused on just Black Ops, meaning that it's ever so possible to balance the game despite how challenging it may be.

With a dedicated Multiplayer team since day one it has allowed them to "use their resources to make more than we've ever made before" but to also "really polish and balance it to the degree that it was necessary".

To catch the newly published interview with CVG, head over to here ».

We also have two new videos from G4TV » for you below. One is an all access preview at the Multiplayer event and the other sees Abbie Heppe and Matt Keil talking about their opinions and thoughts after attending the Multiplayer event a week ago.

Watch the videos here: http://blackops.digitalwarfare247.com/news/hardest-cod-to-balance

Vahn Talks About Tactical Insertion

From callofduty.com:

Hello,

We love Tac Insert. It does a few things for the game strategy. A well organized team of Tac Insert user can roll the competition in Demo. It's grand, really, and how it should be. Counter by organizing your own team of Tac Insert users and roll with Hacker.

It also solves a problem. A lot of you are super convinced you can make a better spawn system than we can. That's cool. So, here you go. Here is Tac Insert. Pick your own spawn point and stop yelling at me.

Trying to use Tac Insert but are getting Tac Insert spawned camped? Well, you probably deserve that but you can now cancel your own Tac Insert in the Killcam. That's new to Black Ops.

The main reason I am not as worried about Tac Insert as you? We can disable it. And, I just did for Free-For-All (hardcore and core) variants. It will still work in Private Matches in Free for All, but then you don't get XP in Private Matches so it can't be used for boosting.

The game has a reporting system. Report boosters and let's make examples of them. Once you lay the ban hammer on enough bad people word will get around that we don't take too kindly to this sort of thing.

David 'Vahn' Vonderhaar

way to keep us abreast hoss
shame there's not much gore in the multiplayer...but hey that shouldn't hamper the fun in this game
Ed Harris is a boss. can't wait to hear him in this game...come to think of it there were plenty celebrities in the COD series, Kieffer Sutherland, Keith David, Barry Pepper, Jason Statham, Giovanni Ribisi and many others.
I think 50 cent was in one of the COD games too can't recall

yea 50 cent is the voice of the marine voice over in the multiplayer in MW2

Curtis Jackson (50 Cent) - A popular hip hop performer who does voicework for auxiliary characters in the campaign and multiplayer modes, paticularly as the US Navy SEAL team announcer
