And actually Capn there are quite alot of titles on XBL that can be dled straight to the Xbox prolly check xbox.com for a proper list. Of course... there is the path of the sith... a modded xbox can store all games...

Nah, not interested in modding it as I plan to get a subscription. WOuld just have preferred to have a setup similar to the PC where games can live on the machine itself.

Well, you can Install the games once you have the disc so as not to overkill your optical drive. BUT you must have the disc in the machine while you play it from the HD. And well I think as more and more people get faster Internet connections, I foresee downloads as the future on consoles as well. You can already purchase older Xbox 360 titles as well as the arcade games (When I say Older, I believe games like Gears 2, Halo 3 and Fallout 2 are all downloadable for $29.99 each I believe, as W1nTry said check Xbox.com for the entire list), but I think eventually they will have brand new games on release being able to be downloaded. All in good time.

It's not as much of a hassle as you think, thing is I sweat mostly 2-3 games atm. Bops, BC2, Reach. MOstly Bops so it never leaves the tray XD.
There are alot of other titles that you can download, but since imho it's all about the online experience, you'll find that you play mostly 2-3 games at most on the 360. So doh make a mountain out of a mole hill :p
