Sensible upgrade?
« on: October 10, 2012, 02:15:35 PM »
Hey guys I've recently began considering upgrading from x58, I have an i7 950 and 12gb ram. I am considering z77 with something like a 3770k  and maybe 16gb ram.

I am curious about your views, makes sense? Or should I hold out for longer/better?

If you need details lemme kno

I have an i7 and 16gb ram myself. What would be the reason from upgrading from an already overpowered machine?

What is your "use case"?

Are you struggling with poor frames in a particular game or program?

Some application on the horizon that you plan to run and think you'll need additional horse power?

I use adobe premiere pro and after effects, both of their usage expands to whatever hardware you have ie 100% CPU usage and when dealing with pictures in Lightroom and photoshop I've capped all my ram several times in the past.

Whilst my plan was to upgrade in the cycle after ivy bridge I was wondering if changing out mobo CPU ram might make sense now. What kind of improvements do you think I'll see? I've been checking around and the on board gpu apparently does well on video encoding, anybody have any views on how this works? I have a 570 to help encoding but if the new gpu is tailor made for encoding I might be able to use them in tandem.

Based on some initial research I think I'll see a 30% ish improvement maybe more in my scenario, anyone with experience in this?

Hmmm, very strange hardcore techies like those guys settling for hardware that is generations behind the curve. I upgrade not because of the need but rather the sheer joy of building and running a super rig.

But if ur system does what you need it to do for the hour, I see no reason for you to change anything there.

Also, you're running x58 which is Intel's last flagship chipset.

Moving to ivy bridge (non "E") parts is a very very minor upgrade (a downgrade actually in a few respects) from what you have.

If you REALLY wanna do some upgrades, then you're looking at a 3930k on x79 MINIMUM or wait till ivy bridge e comes out next year.

Upgrading to X79 is the only 'proper' upgrade from X58 (in my opinion of course).

...and you don't need no 6-core...doh study Awesome.  Ask him what all he doing that requires all them extra threads.  Multi-core Skype?
That extra money could spend on GPU(s), SSDs, or more RAM.

Agree with only sensable upgrade from x58 being x79, skip ivy bridge, it sucks for anything other than mobile. But if you maxing out your cpu in you gpu intensive apps like after effects etc, d 6-core cpu going to do you very well if u want to bud d money for it. Ull also be able to load up that sucker with plenty ram for cheap. I have 64gb in my beast right now.
