Arc doh come round with that separate MP and Solo FUBAR! that's like saying we gonna sell you a roti in 2 parts, you buy the dahlpouri and then we charge you separately for chicken/goat/channa/etc. MESS. Imagine you pull up by ur favourite doubles vendor and he sells you the channa and anchar at $4 and then say you hadda spend another $4 on the bara... but his reasoning "it taste betta now" HOSS NO.

Let's get real, the realm of single player has reduced to all but a handful of genres. ONLINE IS where it's at, even if its only online COOP, MP is a MUST. I'm HARD pressed to purchase ANY game that doesn't have coop or some form of MP component today. The last I bought was FFIV and whilst I am a die hard RPG fan of the FF series... after I beat it I just COULD NOT pick it back up to finish all the SINGLE player missions that didn't constitute to the story line. When there is SOOO much good MP out there and all your friends waiting to jump in... SP is just well... single.

Also to add

next time a man talking about MW3 and mention IW without Sledghammer getting a Price Moustache Sparta Kick. Ppl dont know (and never will) what went on behind the scenes, but BELIEVE me the epicz would not have happened without both studios together.

Well, that's just you W1nTry.

...and that's a truly horrible analogy.  Not even worth my time and effort to deconstruct. :(

Quick question:  How many of you actually finished the SP campaigns of MW2, Black Ops, Bad Company 2, Crysis 2, and about half a dozen other shooters that came out in the last few years?

The fact is, there are many single-player games on all platforms that have done quite well,
it's just that we've been become so spoiled by the Halos and the CoDs that we've come to expect
(demand?) that certain genres of games must have a MP component.  I don't totally agree with that.

Lets take a look at the recent Medal Of Honor.  Stellar single-player...not so great multiplayer.
Now THERE's an example where I would have happily paid about 25-30 US for the SP part, which
was made by a different studio than the MP mind you, and simply enjoyed that, and maybe down
the line bought the MP when I felt it was worth it, via a sale or something.

THAT's a model I can live with...if it were possible.

There are lots of action and adventure games that are SP also, that sold millions.
I didn't hear those people complaining en masse 'well I not buying this great game because there's no MP'.

What I'm suggesting simply, is that I think it's time that gamers be given a choice.  That's all.

You want the whole game, okay...you can get it for this price, say 60 US.
If you say, screw the SP, I just wanna shoot people, buy the MP only, because we both
know there are a TON of people who don't even bother with the SP in lots of FPS games.
It can be priced in such a way that you pay slightly more if you purchase both separately
as an incentive to purchase the whole game.  You know choice  nah.

Not to mention the MANY times we've PLAYED IT OVER to help someone ELSE finish it in COOP

But Arc that's why there are MANY single player games out there... like angry birds... farmville is arguable MP but really SP... etc etc etc

On the console, there are certain types of games that are SP oriented and that's their strength, but for MANY developers today, you'd be an IDIOT to NOT take advantage of the MP platform. Games like COD, BF, GOW, etc would NOT be here today if NOT for MP. Games like RDR are excellent SP but ENCOURAGE MP and WHY NOT? the biggest selling titles are MP, WOW anyone? I don't know why you think we should settle for separating the SP and MP experiences? why? why should we get LESS for MORE money?

The campaigns are over-the-top, linear action fun.

As for Arc's question, I play the campaigns of all my shooter games. Sometimes I don't play multiplayer until I've completed the campaign.

You seem to intentionally want to miss the point just for the sake of 'getting one back'.

...but we've already stated our positions on the matter, so consider this particular debate closed.

Battlefield 3 is only 16 days away, so everything else is moot at this point.

@ arc, I think w1n did miss your point, which is this:

"Give gamers the choice of purchasing the single player aside from the multiplayer."

As a gamer, I see no harm in that. As it was pointed out, the single player and multiplayer are sometimes done by different teams. Sometimes its even a separate executable altogether. Almost begging to be separated and packaged as a different game / add on.

As a publisher, on the other hand, hell naaw. That's leaving money on the table.

Why charge $30.00 for a game that they could charge $60.00 for by bundling the multiplayer component?

If it doesn't sell well, they still have the option of reducing the price to say $40.00 on a steam special and picking up sale numbers then. Still better than starting off at $30.00.

In conclusion, I don't think Arc proposal was preposterous. We may even see a few games adopt that approach (if a few haven't already)

I did get Arc point, however he made reference to a 20h SP meaning that it's not just a matter of separating the SP and MP components, but also giving us more content and making it a better experience in its own right. If you do this however ppl would be inclined to charge more money. If they put more development time and effort into separate components why not CHARGE more?

Think about it this way, if say COD or Gears or BF or any largely successful game was to sell you a SP version with the EXACT same content we get now, do you think it'd be even remotely as successful as it is now? I honestly don't believe so. Also you have pointed it out many times on the forum now Wyatt, what are the sales figures for the best SP games out there? Read Dead and the likes compared to their MP brethren?

Do yal really think it's a model they'd go for? Money talks and BS walks, plain talk.

I never said anyone was getting on uncivilized but just a bit childish over the past few days with the whole MWF3, BF3, SP/MP discussions, It just seem efforts can be made to come to a justifiable agreement. I am just saying this as a person spectating from outside of the issue, who is seeing that both parties have presented more than valid points and the amount of energy being given to continue the arguments are unnecessary.

energy is a sign of passion

I see nothing wrong with energetic convo around the topics once it doesn't get disrespectful.

As arc rightfully said, that's the very purpose of a forum.

Its ironic that your comment raised the most ire. Seeing that your intention was to quell ruckus and bring about peace.

Getting back on topic (wait....isn't this the CoD MW3 thread, lol) here is a link to an article that covers this ground pretty well.

http://www.gamezone.com/editorials/should_multiplayer_and_single-player_be_separate_games

We've seen some publishers achieve great success in the freemium model amongst mmo and moba games.

Maybe a freemium model would be an option too.

Say they sell the sp campaign for US$19.99

You get free multiplayer up to Level 5. Pay $19.99 to unlock the full multiplayer experience.

Or they could even go microtransactions.

I only think less established franchises will experiment with models like this. On the other hand Battlefield did try it with their shitty Battlefield Free2Play, Blizzard did it with World of Warcraft and there was talk of a Starcraft 2 free2play in Korea. Also Dawn of War had a multiplayer spin off being sold separate on Steam. Those are some pretty big franchises, so maybe I'm wrong.
