NEED HELP
« on: October 29, 2010, 11:16:54 AM »
I built a pc almost a year ago and everything was going fine until now...the pc shutsdown automatically sometimes when I surf the web and even when I defrag the system or do a virus scan.  Anyone has any ideas on how to fix this problem

1. Your pc could be overheating. Check to see if the cpu fan is working. Modern pc's shut themselves down to prevent damage to components when it overheats. If you're running Windows Vista/7 you can check your temps via the performance monitor to see if your computer is overheating. Additionally you can check your Event Viewer logs to see what errors or warnings are occurring.
2. You pc can be infected with a nasty virus.lol.
3. You may have a faulty PSU (Power Supply Unit). Try using a diifferent PSU if one is available.

Do the above and repost some results.. hope this helps. good luck!

I would say the power supply failing, see if you can test another one, may resolve your issue.

Hmm, in addition to the above recommendations, you could also update your bios.

Sometimes it rectifies wonky behaviour with ACPI and power management.

Which motherboard do you have? Make/Model?

Also, are there additional case fans in your rig? To help with cooling?

Reason why I believe it is hardware related, specifically to the PSU is because the build is close to a year old. If it was in fact due to a BIOS issue then he would probably have had this problem from the start.

The shutdown you are getting is a complete shutdown right? You don't get a Blue Screen? BSOD could indicate faulty RAM, IRQ conflicts or driver issues....

No BSOD it just comes off by itself.  I replaced the PSU with a new one I bought from PRW and I was running a couple of programs and so far it hasn't shutdown
