PCs set to become more expensive?
« on: January 12, 2010, 04:19:52 PM »
This is a disturbing concept, but here's ARs take on why some analyst suspect that PC prices DIY or otherwise is GOING to rise later this year:
Quote
PC prices may rise, reversing six-year trend
PCs are likely to cost more in 2010 due to component shortages after manufacturers cut back on capacity during the economic downturn.

By Eric Bangeman

Your next PC may cost you a bit more than expected if you buy later this year. Market research masters Gartner say that the price of building PCs will climb this year, reversing a six-year trend, due to component scarcity. That's going to pose a bit of challenge to manufacturers who have focused on pumping out cheap netbooks during the economic downturn.

The biggest driver of the likely price increase is memory. The DRAM industry is in the midst of moving from DDR2 to DDR3, which means less of each type of RAM is being produced. DDR3 spot prices are up 23 percent over the last month; with memory comprising about a tenth of a PC's overall cost, that's a significant cost for OEMs to absorb.

It's not just RAM: LCD panels and hard drive prices are on the rise, with the cost of the former expected to jump by as much as 20 percent. Optical drives are also suffering from supply constraints.

As a result of the recession, component manufacturers reduced capacity and delayed building additional plants. While investment is on the way back up, it takes time for new facilities to come online. In the meantime, OEMs face a dilemma: how much of the additional costs can they pass on to consumers and businesses without scaring them away from new hardware?

What concerns me the most is that i'm seeing other articles highlighting that companies ARE reducing inventories and manufacturers are decreasing output... Personally I think it's a move by the hardware cartels to drive prices back up, using the 'excuse' of a recession. The shortages of video cards at least on the AMD side MAY be contributed to poor yields, but why not CONTROLLED distribution to drive costs UP? and this excuse about MEMORY being in lower supply because of underproduction as they switch from DDR2-DDR3, IF that be the case, then WHY were we able to buy DDR3 just 3-4 months ago @ 30-40% lower than right now? When DDR moved to DDR2, did we see CHEAP prices followed by HIGH prices? NO we saw high prices followed by LOW.

I fear this may be the reality, I just can't help buy feel that JUST like America's *depression* it's all a CALCULATED and well ORCHESTRATED PLOT to make money.

If things are like good ole T&T nope... once a price goes up here seldom EVER does it come back down...

Pray tell why did you expect prices to rise? the PEAK of the recession, we didn't see prices go up, why now?

this is not positive news as it requires spending and the exchanging of money to run the economy. with less stock and at higher prices, most people would wait it out before upgrading and the 'recession' would only last longer. good thing i upgraded late last year. I bought most of my parts on amazon and i noticed the parts i bought increased by about 20-30% on average about a month after i purchased. i won't doubt it either that the prices of netbooks would increase also.

Looks like the 360 and PS3 might see some more action in the coming years if this pans out.

As if US$250+ vid cards wasn't already a barrier to PC gaming for some. steups
