The MovieTowne cinema chain is expanding yet again, after what owner Derek Chin called a record year which saw the enterprise selling an estimated one million $45 tickets at its Port of Spain location. This has happened despite the fact that economists termed 2009 ’the year of the bust’ and ’guava season’. It was said that entertainment would be one of the first items to be chopped from budgets in these ’hard economic times’. However, the figures at MovieTowne say otherwise.Seven years after the first MovieTowne opened its doors at Invader’s Bay, Mucurapo, and one year after the franchise spread to Tobago, MovieTowne will open the doors of its Chaguanas branch today, with a gala function and movie premiere. Some of the guests marked for attendance are Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner, and Trade Minister Mariano Browne. The opening will feature the newest Bollywood movie-either My name is Khan or Dulha Mil Gaya-as Chin said this cineplex will cater to lovers of both Hollywood and Bollywood movies.Chin told the Express this cineplex will comprise eight theatres and a concession stand.Chin is now also in talks with State agents to lease the land behind MovieTowne at Invader’s Bay, in the hope of expanding it into a tourism hot spot which will include a bowling alley, marina, hotel, world-class tropical aquarium and wax museum, which will showcase regional celebrities and a ’Streets of the World’ theme park.’It’s something I’m just wringing my hands, waiting to do. It could be a good tourism spot. It will be world-class, a site to see, that Trinidadians can be proud of,’ he said.Chin said he has met with Prime Minister Patrick Manning twice on the matter of leasing the land, and is hoping the deal comes through this year.
What I find strange is that I drive the highway just about EVERY FRICKING DAY, and obviously pass Movietowne Chag... honestly it DOESN'T LOOK ready.... I guess i'll look at it a lil more stringently this evening on meh way down.
Maybe they just going for an inconspicuous look
the side that viewable from the highway has a lot of work to be done, i believe that area will house more car parks and the stores, he other side with the movie screens is pretty much done though
its funny cause movie towne DID have 3d before.. i dont know what they are up tothe first 2 screens were 3d before very strange
