Now, a few of you might think this game's name strikes you as familiar.
If you've brushed up on your gaming history, the
Great Giana Sisters was actually a game from the 80s. <== Click for Wiki article.
Basically, it was a rip-off of the more popular Super Mario Bros game by Nintendo, and it was done as a retort to Nintendo's refusal to allow the Mario Bros. to be ported to the Commodore 64. It was promoted as 'superior' to the Mario Bros., even including the message 'The Brothers are HISTORY!' on posters advertising the game. A mere 2 weeks later, it was pulled off the shelves, under pressure from Nintendo's lawyers.
Because of its rarity (and unauthorized copying of the game helped too), this game achieved cult status.
"Bling, bling, baby!"Now, in 2009, a new Giana Sisters game is coming out on the DS, titled....well. Giana Sisters DS.
I was curious, so I took a spin on their website.
http://www.giana-sisters.com/giana_sisters_en.htmlWow. That game looks
adorable. I like how they've re-designed everything, especially Giana, because if you've seen what she looked like BEFORE.....(shudder). And the music basically screams homage to the 80's-early 90's style of side-scrolling tunes, which is a big plus to a child of the 80's like me. This game looks pretty interesting enough, so I think I might get this one. Sure, it still looks like a Super Mario Bros. rip-off, but it still looks fun to play.
Here's some screenshots I coralled off of Google. A bit fuzzy in some cases.
So, in closing, looks like a pretty nifty game to include in your DS library. But, seeing as how I was burned before by a certain Zombie game that shall not be mentioned, I'll take the game for a test run first.
"Mr. Owl, how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?"
Owl: "Kid. I'm a God damn owl. I don't
eat Tootsie Pops. Gimme a beer and some nachos, though, and then we'll talk."
