Well I just got through with the 14.99 , never asked me for key. The problem is I tried it again and its say I dont meet the criteria. However it seems you cant do it from the same machine twice.

I tried from two different machines earlier and got blank.

And both times it asked for a Windows 7 key.

strange

@ messiahh.....streaming would be epic with 4g. Music eats up most of the space on my device as is.

boom bang

That 14.99 loophole is now closed it only worked until Sunday...

that aside the OS is blisteringly FAST like WOW

and I've always been a fan of minimal designs BUT they should have a easier way to close apps

they had ESC close them in the Consumer Preview i dunno why they changed this in the RTM

but I think they should have left it only other problem I have is now my laptop is bluetooth less it told me to uninstall the widcomm software

before I installed and after it isn't even detecting the bluetooth on the machine so I cant even install drivers for ...  apart from those two things everything works great

Yeah, every new OS brings with it these little quirks.

Some can be a real pain in the ass.

Just ran into another.

Apparently, Windows 8 can't speak to samba shares using the new "Microsoft Account" feature.

You have to switch to a regular "local account" to get it working.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2038512

Of course, my Windows 7 machines can connect to samba just fine so this is a Windows 8 issue.

Not good news for those of us using Linux based servers at home. Ubuntu and otherwise.

*edit*

On a whim, I got it to connect by mapping via IP address instead of hostname

For some reason, all the Windows 7 machines can ping the samba machine by name but not Windows 8.

Well I've been an opensource advocate for years so always good to have a linux machine running in the house.

As the man said...its free. You really can't argue with free.

In fact, I think Ubuntu has gotten so good that it is a viable alternative to Windows. At US$179 for Windows 7 Pro, I would choose Ubuntu over it for EVERYTHING (except games)

That is, I would run it on all the machines in the house except the primary gaming rig.

As a server....well linux still pwns. Compare the Windows server price to an Ubuntu server. Call me when you stop laughing, lol

I'm willing to bet that Microsoft is making Windows 8 so cheap to prevent Ubuntu gaining traction in the desktop/laptop market.

Android is already proving to be a massive threat on the mobile market and that's linux based.

lol I knew about both ways but I really liked just using ESC because I could control the tiles without using the mouse/touchpad .... I would like them to restore that in a future update tho....

@ preston...scene. (you sure it dont have an option someway to put it back on though?)

@wyatt, MS dont have 95% market share in the PC business by guess, linux is not going to even begin to make a dent. And you cant fling up the price for win7 up there, use current prices nah.

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-3UR-00001-Windows-8-Pro/dp/B008H3SW4I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1351782225&sr=8-1&keywords=windows+8+pro  , linux may be free, but that price for an OS that can do everything? GG. (And thats PRO, if u talking home / non-domain use, windows 8 non-pro going to be just fine for even less....)

As far as linux servers go, some legacy stuff still run on it, mainly POS systems, banking systems, hardware plants etc etc. But everybody uses windows servers, you take a look at server 2008 lately? complete pwnage. And 2012 right around d corner. Also, when bundled with server hardware, them server OS rel cheap too.
And with the advent of ESX (everybody should be using this), it even cheaper. A datacenter license allows you to have unlimited 2008 vms.......yes unlimited.

MS doing very well in d pricing scheme, whatever momentum linux seem to have been only starting to make, has been completely derailed by MS new pricing and future pricing models. And we havent even got into functionality, integration, etc etc yet. I didnt want to go there wyat, stop engaging me in this pointless debate.
It only going to end 1 way. D linux folks still using linux, and me laughing till i pee.

Let's just not bother shall we.....(rolf lmao)

Linux is good enough to replace Windows 7 and I am saying it could very well be the fear of ubuntu gaining traction that Windows 8 is so cheap. At an introductory price that is unbelievable.

Not to mention very lax measures that basically allows anyone with any windows version on their PC to upgrade for cheap.

That's not something I would ever expect from the guys at Redmund.

Linux could be whats keeping Microsoft honest. Which is a good thing. I don't want ubuntu to disappear anytime soon. Otherwise it would be back to US$170 for a desktop OS to play games.

Everything else ubuntu handling normal (and for free)

If they port Dota 2 to linux, well then.....gg

Oh and when I spoke about server, I was talking in the home context.

Not enterprise. There are a lot of other wheels turning at the enterprise level that will keep Microsoft in the lead. Linux has its place in the enterprise but I don't see it challenging the Exchange / Windows 2003/2008/2012 combo anytime soon.

As much as i hate apple, i'll have to make a case for them here. The reason windows 8 is so cheap has nothing atal to do with linux, You cant even walk in a store and find a linux machien to buy, if them men have .05 marketshare they have PLENTY! Like i noted, MS have some odd 95%, d rest belongs to Apple. And d reason windows 8 so low, is because of d success of the ipad. Even though it's not a direct competitor to the PC market, because apple created a new market with the Ipad, and MS want's a piece of that pie. and they trying to get it by doing there 3 screens vision. PC/Slates, XBOX, and Phone all same core. As such, to compete in the tablet space, they had to price windows 8 right. Becuase d more ppl using windows 8 and the live tiles system, the more attention the Phones will get, etc etc etc. Is a major plan Microsoft have competing with Apple's Ipad, Apple's Iphone, and the Massive Android mobile echosystem. That's the reason windows 8 so cheap, it has nothing atal to do with Linux in the PC space, because in the PC space MS have no competition atal. But MS want that mobile and tablet market too. Linux as a general desktop OS is as dead as it was many years ago. I'd actually argue that back in day linux was more prevalent than it is now.

Case in point:

December, 2011 to October, 2012

http://www.netmarketshare.com/os-market-share.aspx?qprid=9

Note, linux is at the very bottom, even "other" beat it, my word. I know not of the traction you speak of. A few techies wanting to feel leet using linux doesnt qualify as traction.

I didn't say it gained traction, I said Microsoft could be making a pre-emptive strike to prevent it from gaining traction.

I am sure the vast majority of people in the world do not know that Ubuntu is at last a viable desktop replacement for Windows.

Many may still think it a complex techie only OS.

At the price of Windows 8, no one need even hazard the thought of considering an alternative OS.

Nip that in the bud right there.

However, linux has dominated another space....which may have the same spillover effect that Microsoft is trying to achieve with its tablet, desktop, phone OS combo.

That is ANDROID.

And notice Google is already stream lining its marketing around their Linux os.

Nexus 4 (Phone), Nexus 7 (Tablet) , Nexus 10 (Bigger Tablet)

Maybe only a matter of time before they start attacking 15" and 17"

Android to the world.

Because face it....for everything (including light gaming) Android can handle it.

Only the hard core gamer who games on PC would still require a full Windows OS on his desktop. That is a fraction of the populace.

So linux may very well win the war, sneakily by attacking on the mobile front first. Where most of the growth is taking place.

Desktops are fast becoming relics in the typical house hold. If that trend continues...they may not even need to worry about that market segment at all.

Dude u serious? you saw the market share cap? Microsoft is not remotely concerned about linux in that space.
And microsoft not getting dethroned from that position ANYTIME soon. Men could talk how much post pc they want, how much less PC's in d house hold all that jazz, it doesnt matter. In the enterprise, there is not stopping the windows echosystem. It will take alot of time, and something very very drastic to get Microsoft worried on the PC front. Mainly because of the reasons you mentioned, i.e. They rock solid server infrastructure and integration with PCs. Stop trying to make a case for linux on d desktop, there is no case, MS is not worried concerned or even know linux desktop exists lolol. This is what made Microsoft a monopoly, and linux has been trying for years on end, in d end they give up, and went the mobile route. They should stick to that doh, because they cannot touch MS in the PC echosystem.

Like i said, Apple Ipad, the Iphone, and things like the GS3 is d reason microsoft made d moves it made. It has nothing to do with linux...and i quote...."replacing windows 7" rofl lmao rofl lmao. And they are in no way atal whatsoever or remotely worried bout anybody touching they PC echosystem. This is purely about getting a slice of that mobile Pie that Apple eating every quater. And about boosting their vision of the same OS across all form factors. That is they real goal, because they know they have PC's on lockdown, and if they get d same OS on xbox and windows phone, it's naturally going to encourage sales in those areas as well. Windows 8 came very closely to 1 OS. same NT core across the board, and i think Windows 9 they'll finally get to the point where is d same exact thing on PC/Tablets/Xbox/Phones.

You have said nothing to subside my laughter.

But keep hope alive though, advocates of linux has been speaking that way for years on end. They still made no headway what so ever in the pc echosystem. rofl.

not to mention the majority of users actually dont know they are paying for an OS...

they buy a laptop or a desktop for X amount of money and get what they want... the only way linux could even make a dent is if all the major PC manufacturers decide they going to start replacing windows with some flavor of linux/android etc.. and guess what... android makers are paying royalties to microsoft now so there will be further cost to manufacturers to produce android based pc's...

android's success is nothing hard to figure out... android gave phone manufacturers a free operating system to play in a market where apple dominated, it allowed them to do what they wanted with no licensing fees.. hence the mad rush to android by phone manufacturers... you think android got popular because its a good OS? laughable.. it got popular because major manufacturers pushed it HARD...

so again its all up to the manufacturers at this point... its not the same as the mobile market.. if microsoft were the only ones making windows desktop pc's then i could see where linux/android would be a viable option to all other pc manufacturers to jump on that bandwagon

And that's the same thing going on with Windows Phone right now. Without a major push by Manufacturers and in this case Carriers, it rel hard. Carriers push android HARD as well, because they got fedup of Apple walking all over them. Hopefully with windows phone 8 and the new HTC and Nokia line of phones, carriers go push it more. And if MS with all d money and power they have, cetch they royal with wp7 becuase carriers, htc, and samsung, didnt pick it up and run with it. What hope is there for linux?  Answer = Zero.

Unless Dell, HP, Asus, Acer, etc, unless one of d rel big boys, or several of them decide to bring out a linux line off PC's u seeing in stores, it will always remain at the bottom of the barrel (where it belongs). BTW, HP tried a linux line a while back, and it buss so hard, they went level Windows and never look back lol.

Microsoft can afford to take risks, and suffer losses, and fight up in the mobile space till they succeed (just like they did with xbox), but d majority of other companies cannot afford that.

Competition is always good for consumers, but linux has no place in that swet.
