You missed the point completely.

A few years ago, linux was still born as far as gaming was concerned. No traction at all. No activity.

Today, there are a plethora of games available for the free operating system and it can now run the worlds #1 digital distribution platform, namely Steam.

If (when) the steam box comes to market, that activity is going to increase, exponentially.

It is already a viable alternative to Windows as an every day desktop. Soon it will be an option for gamers as well.

How far we have come. Just amazing. All for the price of $0.00

Triple A will come once the numbers go up. Right now Linux is still only about 2% of the PC market.

That low number is a massive increase from where it was years ago. Personally, I think if it makes it to about 10% in the next five years, other big name developers will begin to take it seriously. Although, by that time...the point would be moot because mobile would have taken over. lol

I didn't miss d point Wyatt, u miss mine.
Ubuntu is completely and utterly USELESS to me as a gamer.
D future is d future, when that reach we go see.
But as of right now, as a Gamer, I cannot! Use Ubuntu.
I giving up Wwwaaaayyyyy to much to do that. Namely.....games!

Ubuntu has to be dramatically better than windows 8 for me to give up games for. And dat aint d case.
And with 8.1 some of them Ubuntu features moot cause windows have it too.
So d bottom line is, it useless to me, which was my original comment. Charts, percentages, steam, non of that matters to me, cause I cant currently play any of my favorite games on Ubuntu. And note, I said any, not a single one of my best games is available.

huh?

The point I made was to highlight that Ubuntu is coming into its own as a gaming platform (the point that you missed)

I never said it was fit and ready to replace Messiaah's gaming desktop PC (that was your point...which I did not miss)

Early days still but massive leaps and bounds have been made in Gabe's Newell's promise to make Ubuntu a viable alternative to Windows 8. The train is in motion (pun intended)

I got that point, just didn't see hoe it was relevant to my comment.
But regardless I think ubutu at this point is a mere spec on d radar, it mite be big improvement for Ubuntu, but compared to windows its nothing atal. That train running on coal, but Microsoft flying around in a jet.

Ubuntu not catching windows no time soon in d gaming department. Look at E3, I going on record to say not 1 single tripple a or next Gen title going to be available for Ubuntu.

progress in Ubuntu land don't repressive progress in d real world.

I think dota2 for linux via steam would be a great step in the right direction, focusing on the MOBA community should be the focus for gaming on linux imho. As for my earlier comment on win8, that was a mistake on my part or an issue long since solved after launch.

TW we've been down this road with M, until its realized we should just put that convo on hold, though arguable gaming on linux is booming ergo Android IS linux but anyways. For most PC users linux is very well able to do everything that common ppl do, office, internet, movies, light gaming or mobile gaming (huge). For the more focused markets gaming, specific apps, windows ftw. I ought to try my usb-serial adapter again, once that's working I would have little use for windows since I game on the console mostly.

Precisely.

Very capable. The money I'll be saving on buying a windows license could be put to better use buying games on steam. You know how many great games $120 can buy???

I already saved on two licenses so far (since I run ubuntu on two PCs instead of Windows)

Let Gabe chase after Windows 8. He has the money and cahonas to do it. I'll enjoy the spoils of his labour.

As will many who don't mind having a free operating system as part of their software repertoire.

D verdict is still out on the "many" eh Wyatt lol.
but wintry right, until the Ubuntu dream is realized, it's a kind of pointless debate.
And if all u doing on Linux is playing dota, why u need to save money for steam games? Lol.

as it is now, the hardcore gamer, corporations and the general populous have no interest in Ubuntu.
when tripple A crosplatform titles start Being released for xbox\ps4\pc\ubuntu then this convo might make sense.
until then, doh even bother.

Rome was not built in a day.

Android has already scored big for the linux side of the fence and as you know, I have been harping about their meteoric rise ad nauseum.

I'm not as gung ho about ubuntu's quest to achieve mainstream as I expect android will reach that major milestone and dethrone Microsoft before they do.

Canonical are still chasing after the desktop which is itself a platform soon to be redundant.

They will need to be in the mobile space to be relevant in the coming years. A move that is already underway.

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13970_7-57571750-78/ubuntu-touch-beats-firefox-os-to-win-best-of-mwc-from-cnet/

Ubuntu Touch iymc.

Microsoft is no fool though so I don't expect them to give up the mobile space to android/ubuntu without a fight. We will see how that pans out.

On another note, I do think Ubuntu is mature enough for soho deployment. If I had 5 PCs in a small office and had to choose an OS, I'd go Ubuntu as this stage. Especially since hard core gaming won't be a requirement. Can't beat the price for a free OS and office suite.

Ill never in a million years recommend ubuntu to any client, even if is a 1 user office.

And no, MS not giving up the mobile market without a fight, but the reason android reach way they reach is because MS allow it, they basically sit down on they ass and did nothing whiles Android took over, now they trying to play catch-up. Unfortunately that's not the case when it comes to ubuntu. MS did not conceed anything to them.

And in the tablet space, Anroid playing as much catch-up as MS because apple dominates that space thoroughly. So the verdict is still out on the tablet market, that one we go have to wait to see, but as of right now, that belongs to apple.

But if u think MS stupid and just going to sit back whiles all these "threaths" crop up and do nothing about it, then you surely mistaken. MS not going to just get "de-throne" they are too big, too integrated, and have too much power still. Windows Phone has been struggling since launch, and it still cyah dead, cause MS refuse to let it. As proven with windows 8.1, they can listen, adapt, and change.

But they strangle hold on coporoate and global use of windows, is way to massive for anybody to threaten that at this point, even considering the mobile rise. i know u like articles and figures so here:

December 2012:

Yes, that red line at the bottom of the chart is linux, it's rising yes, but at a very slow rate. Watch the windows 8 spike in comparison.

It's going to take ALOT of time, and ALOT of comeptition, and some serious gonards, to dethrone MS with that kind of a lead, and that's thinking MS just going to sit on they ass and do nothing like they did with windows mobile. They did not earn the title of being a "Monopoly" by guess.

We'll see how it turns out, but i have no faith in ubuntu at all. Android has proven it's worth, and even android is a dramatic ways away, from taking on Windows Desktop.

And even further evidence of Microsoft's continued sucess, Bill gates is now again the richest man in the world, even after giving away 28 billion $ of his fortune (if he had not given that away, he would have never lost the title) But MS doing so well, he reclaim said title, dispite all d money he giving towards charity.

I said it before, and i saying it again, dont underestimate uncle bill.

No doubt

Ubuntu has a lot of catching up to do but as both yours and my charts show, it is trending upwards and not downwards which speaks volumes.

Totally agreed that mobile is where the game is going to be at. We will see if Bill can use those deep pockets to catch up with Android.

If not we'll be asking Microsoft: "Where's your crown King Nothing?"

Indeed, if bill cyah use he money to catch up that would be worrying. But so far I liking their plan, it go just take time for all the pieces to be inplace, then checkmate. Xbox One being one of those many pieces. They doing alto of things from a wholelistic standpoint. MS is in the process of reinventing themselves as a devices and services company, and not just a software company. (Xbox and surface being they two big devices right now, phones will soon follow). And their 3 screens vision being setup nicely too, with windows 8, Xbox, and wp8 all sharing the same core. And all tied together by their various services. Skydrive, Bing, Outlook, Skype. They also in the process of making a unified Store across all 3. Alot of work, alot of changes, and alot of money being spent right now. But they long term goal is brilliant. Once bill ready to move that knight into place, is checkmate.

Just finished checking out Windows 8.1, one word, EPIC!

Love these updates Apps/Features: IE, Music, Search, Reading List, Skype, SkyDrive, Keyboard. Major Improvements!

Cant wait for mail updated in 8.1 RTM as well as final feature updates / improvements.

Seamless upgrade using ISO, all apps and settings intact.
Most AV incompatible at the moment , so you'll have to rely on built in Security Essentials, or Norton Beta for 8.1. Upgrade was done on Surface Pro. When NVIDIA beta 8.1 drivers out ill main it!

I installed it on my main rig this morning early. Although subtle in the changes made, I am now 95% comfortable with the way things are now. Dont expect to see wild changes as soon as you install because a lot of the good stuff is under the hood and available for the tweaking. I have customised so that I boot directly to the classic windows desktop. Also, pressing the start button takes me to my installed windows apps first, then down the road there's all the metro ui apps that I could live without.

They also added a shutdown/restart option to the win+x menu and there are a few slight ui changes in windows explorer itself. Im not sure if this was possible before but you can now run the classic windows desktop alongside a metro app in a side by side splitscreen. Pretty cool.

Performance is the same smooth experience so no complaints there. Good job MS. I could work with this.

But no, the classic start menu is not there, nor will it ever return I think...but for me, whats there is a substitute I can learn to live with.

Arcman, this is not a typical update, it's like a whole new OS. So when u update, is really Upgrade u upgrading.
Good thing is, my upgrade process was seamless. and everything remain intact like I mentioned.

And there are a lot of things missing in this Preview, like the revamped Mail client not here atal. They said all that coming in final build. So we still have stuff to look forward too.

Speaking of things that changed. These are the changes that I glad for:

IE Metro: UNLIMITED TABS! why on earth that wasn't they from d start I have no idea, but it epic non-theless. Also u can do multiple IE windows, and it go make tab stacks with a lil number on it indicating how much tabs u have in a particular stack. If u click a stack it will open that stack in 50/50 mode with ur original, and u could do multiple of these stacks. Also it syncs those tabs across all Windows 8 device. I can actually use Metro IE as my main browser now.

Metro Apps/ Multitasking:  As Capt. realize, things work differently here. U can now run multiple metro apps simultaneously across all your monitors. So u can have 4 metro apps in a 25/25/25/25 layout on monitor 1, a 50/50 layout on monitor 2, Desktop and another metro app on monitor 3 : So metro apps closer to what desktop apps have been for years. Right now I have Metro IE on surface, and Metro Mail on my secondary monitor.

Skype: Is now fully baked into the OS, and more integration to come in final 8.1

Skydrive: Is now fully baked into the OS, no "Skydrive App" required. it just there, it just works, and u can access the settings for the app from metro skydrive settings menu. U can do Meta Data stubs, or full offline for ur library. And the sync radically and dramatically faster on 8.1 I add a file and it instantly on skydrive, kinda amazing d speed they achieve.

Reading List: It's like a Global Google Reader service / app for windows 8. U can "Share" anything to your reading list, website from IE, artists from Music, etc etc etc. And this list syncs across skydrive.

Sharing Charm: More stuff can be shared, so I was on an amazon order, with my tracking number highlighted, I did: Share->Package Tracker, and it created a package with tracking number pre-populated, all I had to do was name it and click save.

Music App: The music app in windows 8 was rank balls. The music app in 8.1 is pure genius. One stupid thing, MS remove libraries by default, and the music app relies on this to populate it. So I just enable back libraries from explorer settings, and point it back and gg. Also libraries can now be pointed to MicroSD cards. Which is where all my music was, so GG right round.

Start Screen Sync: Yea, syncs start screen across all windows 8 devices if u want.

Search: If you thought search was epic before, wait till u see the new one. Gone is that category business on the side, now you type what u want and it's there. And is global search as mentioned some time before, so Web, Files, Apps, etc etc, it searches in all of those. Hell searching for an Artists and being able to play an album on ur machine from right there is epic.

Keyboard: JAH!, epic, simply epic. Best software keyboard I've ever seen. GG MS, GG. Too many changes here to list, just hada check it out yuhself.

8.1 RTM going to be epic. And if MS coulda improve it so much in just 1 year. I look forward to future iterations / Windows 9.

So all in all, 8.1 has tons of changes for Touch Devices, and Enough to Desktop to make men like Capt. happy. Win Win.

I'm guessing it will be a mandatory update at that point anyway.  Don't have a problem with that.

Nah Arc, I understood that, I was just highlighting what I like bout 8.1.

As for upgrading main, I woulda have a problem if I had to re-install stuff. Which I think they say you'll have to do going from Preview build to Final. But every Preview version of MS os had said that, and I upgrade them all still.

Once you change that cversion.ini file on yUh ISO, it upgrades still. So once NVidia could sort me out, I maining it.

Final slated to come out end of july anyways, not a long wait....I mite wait too oui. Enjoy it on the Surface, and when RTM come out july, just hit main.

I did an "upgrade" and it only saved my data. All my programs...gone. Games...gone.

Small ting, but be warned. I lost all apps. I had Windows 8 Enterprise.
